Carl Orff in fact created an approach for teaching music education for children (Orff Schulwerk) in collaboration with Gunild Keetman; in fact this music is neither original from True Romance or Badlands, it's called Gassenhauer and it belongs to Orff's Schulwerk approach, inspired or arranged by, a much older work by the lutenist Hans Neusiedler (1536).

@HauntedSouthampton Not quite, the marimba is completely different to the xylophone. A marimba is tuned an octave lower to start. Its several feet wider and GENERALLY its made of african pauauk or rosewood, when a xylophone is more likely to be synthetically based. Marimba is more resonant less sharp sounding instrument. The thumb piano your thinking of is usually refered to as a kalibash kalimba!

It's not from Hans Zimmer, nor Carl Orff. They made a "version" or "re-work" from the song "Gassenhauer" ("Street Song").

Carl Orff gave its possible year of origin as 1536 (yes, 1536) by lutenist Hans Neusiedler.

It's a riff on Orff's Musica Poetica. And I'm sure the reference to Badlands use of it is intentional, given the similarities: Two criminal couples on the run, the guy being reminiscent of an icon of cool (James Dean and Elvis, respectively.)

I just find a lot of Hans Zimmer's stuff to be copies of previous work - most notably is his stealing off himself for the main theme in "Pirates of the Caribbean". I know he only had a week to come up with ideas but I thought the Gladiator soundtrack was some of his best work and that ruined both film soundtracks for me
