  • Larry Grenadier: "I think it's, I'm playing in 15. It's minus a beat, but they stay in four, but eventually we hook up. It's a long time... stay focused, and pley against it... They're playing in four and I'm not, eventually, there's a common 1. I played loose... if you write it out, it eventually lines up... we havent' played it so long."

  • i was sittin' in a bar the other night while this song was playing in the background. took me the whole 8 minutes to finally figure out what it was, thinking all time "where the hell have i heard that melody before". now after searching the whole internet for "wonderwall jazz cover" i finally made it here. so happy!!!

  • Piano guys is a little full of himself at times lmao! But pretty cool cover.

  • @TheCoolMardigan He has aright to be, If I may say... lol

  • crazy solo, great cover

  • wow. wow. wow. wow.

  • I never like this song until I hear this cover. Damn man

  • 4:41 is so amazing.

  • Amazing

  • I'm glad Mehldau didn't just use the chord changes. Although you can't really expect anyone to just use the chord changes anymore, the melody will more than likely be thrown in, idk, just depending on your audience. I've seen some shitty covers before, even really advanced jazz ones that incorporated only the changes, pretty disappointed, but I'm pretty satisfied here. ;3

  • Fantastic cover - Mehldau once again proves that he can spot a good poptune and transform it into his own thing.

  • Remember, had it not been for the original melody and chord changes, Brad would not have had a reference point to improvise on or make the tune his own. My guess is he covered the song because he likes the original version. People don't bother taking the time to cover songs they don't like in the first place. It's musical and that is enough for me.

  • @scopaz I second that.

Usually they'll cover songs they like unless under different/unusual circumstances.

  • people write comments that they know or hope will provoke a reaction from other

people with repressed rage. like this one i just wrote. ha ha.

  • it's additive. i'd write it: (7+7+6+7)/8, but i guess you could even do 14+13 if you really wanted to.

  • @tpstrat14 Well said!

  • Brad Mehldau reminds me so much of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, my two jazz hero's.

  • Those who dislike this cover obviously don't have as sophisticated taste in music as those who do like this version; It'd be naive for a person to assume that because this is a cover of Wonderwall means that it's just another cover; most alternate versions do a good job of emulating a song, but the Mehldau Trio is taking it a step further; as colonbaker so eloquently put it, if you don't like it, don't listen to it.

  • I don't think there should be hate to either genre of music.

    The original is great.

    The cover is great.

  • pedestrian.

  • Anyone get the sense that this song is a symbolic slap in the face to shitty pop music like Oasis' Wonderwall song? Yes, you can tell it's Wonderwall by Oasis, but they actually make music into it rather than strumming the same 3 or 4 simple chords at the same constant beat, making you want to kill yourself. I fuckin love you, Brad.

  • @tpstrat14 "Hey, look at me I like jazz, I'm so cool, I have a self proclaimed 'sophisticated' taste in music"

What do you mean by "actually make music", there's never been anything wrong with simplicity, any good musician would tell you that. Brad Mehldau, as a matter of fact, has a few songs himself with very simple chord progressions, hitting one certain note through the whole song. If you want to kill yourself because of a song, trust me, the problem is not the song.

  • @manolobgg That song is shit and you know it... you a bieber fan or somethin?

  • @tpstrat14 I quite like Oasis and many of their songs, Wonderwall was a defining tune for many people. Noel Gallagher has created memorable melodies which in itself is usually quite challenging for many musicians.I also like Mehldau, and his take on it; and I don't think he would even bother playing it if he didn't think it was good. I'm just annoyed by people in awe of their own selves because they happen to enjoy jazz, as if that put your tastes somewhere above anyone's.

  • @tpstrat14 No of course not. Oasis is derived from the same strain as the Beatles and noone would ever dream of saying they made 'shitty pop music'. Repitition is what makes a song memorable, it's a staple of all successful music. Ever wondered why noone else likes your 'oh so precious' jazz?

  • @Eoaiyer21987rhei Yes I do wonder why no one likes jazz. Similarly, I wonder why suicide in the USA is at an all time high, why murder rates are skyrocketing and why there's war everywhere. Good point. The world is a confusing place.... but don't worry, it's not a popularity contest for what is true and good. Come on, you know that!

  • Love this album, its great to hear such a well recorded contemporary jazz trio, and they are on fire on this track so... yes!!

  • 6:50 angels singing

  • @YiddArmy2K8 just a brilliant cover

  • Love your mellow sound. All on the same page musically. Love it when it all comes together like this.

  • The fact that they wrote the song and someone as great as Brad Mehldau wanted to cover it surely means credit to the two brothers no?

  • @joeylovespizza93 Only one brother wrote it. The other one can barely write his name. On a wall. With help.

  • @Widmerpool99 Liam gallaghers writen a lot more then you so you can't really say anything

  • @liammcfc Is his spelling as good as yours?

  • @Widmerpool99 What???

  • So much better... That is a version more intellectual I think, the other is for the mob

  • @TheF00N -____________________-

  • wow what a major killing groove, the crazy bass thing underneath, and the little 52nd st theme quote at 5:58, and all of it, and the gorgeous living room sound at the vanguard. oh wow

  • awesome

  • Ryan Adams > Oasis.

    Brad Melhdau = Awesome.

  • @elfcon11 To solve your equation. Oasis<Ryan Adams<Brad Melhdau

  • I like the original more, but it's fun to hear a jazz composition of a succesful pop song.

  • Larry Grenadier = Awesome

  • Fascinating!

    Thanx for Uploading

  • other tracks of this album?

  • I luv BM, but I'm a Canuckistani, and Paul Anka's version is so moving. I'd like to see BM and PA do a show together... in Ottawa, preferably.

  • different versions, you cant compare them

  • This song is wicked --- these guys are so tight ---- Unbelievable music

  • Please - said with all friendliness - do yourselves a favor - and do Mehldau a favor - and buy the mp3 for 99 cents. It's so well recorded by James Farber and this just sounds really bad audio wise. - Peace

  • I veri musicisti RISPETTANO JAZZ

  • This cover is the shit- dig the bass shifting the beat by a 16th note every measure under the piano in 4/4. Hate to say it, but much hipper than the original.

  • man, how do you find this stuff out, it's impossible for me to hear time signatures

  • its clearly a 4/4, listen to the drums and count....

  • the foundation of the tune is 4/4, but the bass starts out at 27/16 and stays through pretty much until parts of the chorus demand congruence. also during piano solo bass becomes 4/4.

  • ah, yes it is.. the bass was screwing with me

  • @brycon424 It may sound like that but its actually just weird phrasing. the phrasing is and 18 beat phrase then a 14 beat phrase.

  • @imakery no its not...

  • Take that, England

  • lol!

  • Larry and Jeff got quite the off sinc thing down. Firtile ground for Brads big brain. A top three CD for me.

  • woeful.

  • very nice tune...but...feel a little bit 異質...

  • Another kickass cover.

  • Grazie per aver uppato qsto video =)

  • sei luca cesarano vero?

  • I wonder how oasis feels about getting their asses kicked at their own song.

  • Never forget that the Gallaghers wrote this kick-ass melody/progression, not Brad and Co...

It's easy to discount pop songwriters for their simplicity when we perhaps should be praising them for it. Not all, but the great ones.

  • @cheeseydreads99 i wonder how FEALS is written, and also how would it be kicking ur ass.

please, if u dont like it, dont listen to it, its easy.

  • @donswald The original version of Wonderwall featured on Oasis' second album is easily one of its worst versions (sung by Liam, that is). The original composer has constructed far more beautiful (and less trashy) versions since this release, which do the song more justice.

  • Yes! I was looking for this

  • Wonderfulll! Thanks For Posting!
