Basically, just make hollow box (with boolean operation) and carve/boolean the text in front of it. So result is you have a hollow box with hole on it and the hole is the text you boolean operated in. Then just apply either Matte/shadow or easier way: Standard material to the box (with 100 self illumination). So it won't receive lighting or shadows. Put the light (inside the box) off-axis with the camera, so you won't see a lighting blob in it. Remeber to use Shadow Maps so you will get the fx.
Can u gave me a little explanation of how u made it. Just the bassics cause i think i know how u did it but im now sure. U made a hollow text and then a moving volume light ?
I would like to do something like this for a video title.
I learned it from a tutorial. Basically you create a somewhat large rectangle shape first, then put text on it (forget how but it makes it so the text was made by a 'cookie cutter' on the rectangle, so text isnt solid. Then you create a volume light (spotlight i think is what i used for it) and move it behind text, and make sure the rectangle is fully in the frame or u will see light at the sides.
Ok thanks. I know how to engrave the text on the rectangle. U can make that with boolean.
What I don't know is how u made the fade in effect before the volume light comes out through the text, I mean the text appears first in 2D and then the volume light comes out. How did u make the text to appear like that? Anyway thanks. I'll figure out that by myself. Thanks again
I animated the light to come in at an angle. The target was i think in the center of the text, but on frame 0 i had the light far away at the side, and made it so it "swoops" in. So the first fade in ur seeing i think is actually the light made by the volume light seen through the text, but then when it turns and hits the camera face on the light is comming through the text, not going past it.
I posted a video response ( I hope u will allow it)and here is what I wanted the volume light for. The only difference is that I used multicolors for the light.
