But the government should have provided a space and protection for people to protest peacefully and for the businesses around them! There are better ways to be heard than through rioting and protesting. Ask most Colombians and you will find that most of them love Uribe because he DOES take the time to listen to the people.

What bothered me from the protest was that the government's plan should have been to provide a SAFE space for protestors and to use the armed forces or police to PROTECT THEM. If that meant arresting violent people, then that was what they had to do. But if we want to chenge this country we need to create a culture of peace in which we provide channels for people to voice their opinions and demands in a civilized way

The peaceful protesting techniques have been succesful around the world, even during dangerous situations like in Colombia. Consider South Africa, India, and even the US for examples.
If Colombians want the right to assemble, they must respect the government's concern for its people. They must request a permit to assemble peacefully, have a sit in, and when asked to disassemble, do so in a peaceful manner.
The government, soldiers and police are people, too. Perhaps they don't deserve respect, though their family would beg to differ, but someone needs to start somewhere. The person in the mirror is a good place to start.

Bogota is and remains as one of the major metropolitan cities of Latin America and the World and it can be safely visited by taking normal precautions necessary in any other major city worldwide. I wish CNN and Fox would have also focused a lot on the beautiful architecture of the entrance of the Presidential Palace in Bogota and military honor ceremony that took on that place.

Understand that protests happen everywhere Bush goes so do not freak out with this video. It's simple logic. There is always going to be mentality against a figure. It is opposition which is also healthy and always necessary. Watch for what happens every day at the front of the White House. Bill Clinton also visited Cartagena the last year of his term. The last U.S. Presidents to visit Colombia before Clinton were Bush father and Ronal Reagan in 1982 before him. The first one was John F. Kennedy on 1961.

FYI: In 1982 Reagan visited Bogotá, Colombia. But in 1990 Bush (sr.) was in Cartagena (that's also Colombia), in 2000 Clinton visited Cartagena (still Colombia) and in 2004 Bush (jr.) also visited Colombia (in Cartagena).

I think it is amazing how there is no freedom of speech in Colombia. The government sent armed police forces to attack protestors, instead of using these forces to protect them and their right to speak up and demand what they want from their government. But the government should have provided a space and protection for people to protest peacefully and for the businesses around them! There are better ways to be heard than through rioting and protesting. Ask most Colombians and you will find that most of them love Uribe because he DOES take the time to listen to the people.
If anything, the police were out saving lives. A big crowd like that is easy pickings for a car bomb. Nowhere near far-fetched considering the country is in a civil war.

What bothered me from the protest was that the government's plan should have been to provide a SAFE space for protestors and to use the armed forces or police to PROTECT THEM. If that meant arresting violent people, then that was what they had to do. But if we want to chenge this country we need to create a culture of peace in which we provide channels for people to voice their opinions and demands in a civilized way

In the US, in order to protest, the people must request and be approved by the government to assemble, or be arrested. Many are often arrested in the US for illegal assembly.

Clearly you don't have any idea what you're talking about. The civil war Colombia has been ravaged with is exacerbated by American presence. Plan Colombia mainly funds American troops to protect oil pipes for big oil companies based in Texas and has nothing to do with the war on drugs.
With BUSH there will always be no peace.

Clearly you know nothing about me. I travel to Bogota on business three times per year, spending 6 to 12 weeks per year.
Perhaps you're right about the oil pipelines being protected, but you need to look a little deeper into the history of Colombia yourself before you go around declaring who started this war, and why there is no peace in Colombia.
Bush has only been in office since 2001. What did he have to do with FARC and ELN starting this war back in 1964?

We need a leader that's willing to go beyond the corruption that the past few have pocketed, Bush, like the past few presidents has perpetuated this policy and (though he's retracting a lot of outdated and unjust policies towards south america) refuses to repeal PC. With Uribe, crime in Colombia has dropped 80%. Many Colombians love Uribe. That love has changed Colombia quickly. Yet much work is still required. They've been in a civil war almost half a century. Many wounds need healing. Only love will heal those wounds. Not Uribe. Not Bush. And definitely NOT Chavez.
