As a Wings fan, we were fortunate enough to see the Russian Five in action. It was simply amazing to take a decent finesse team and watch them transform in a single shift into an amazing flight of near perfection. Tragically cut way too short, it was amazing to watch when we had it....

When we were kids and saw those red sweaters with 'CCCP' on them, we knew two things; 1) Fear, and 2) We were gonna see some sweet passing and pure skill that would embarrass the other side. Their teams were 5-6 years ahead of everyone and they only started playing hockey in the USSR in the 50's if I remember right? Respect.

At Canada cup 1976 USSR team had his second staff (without first trio Mikhailov-Petrov-Kharlamov and also without Jakushev) so cut it from your list.

And you'll get a result - Canada is the best only if it plays on his own territory, with his own judgement, on his own game fields and at the time he choose. Otherwise - USSR is then best.

Since 1976 there have been 11 hockey tournaments where every country has sent the best players they have. Canada has won 7, Sweden 1, Czech 1, USA 1, and USSR/Russia 1. That should explain who is the best. The "Big Red Machine" was impressive...but not so impressive considering they were a bunch of full-time pro athletes competing against a bunch of amateur kids in the Olympics.
