  • rationing oil solves nothing, except the rate at which the oil is consumed. the amount of oil left will still run out one day. the only feasible alternative that deals with the problem head-on, instead of postponing the problem for future generations, is to find an alternative. a sustainable alternative. we have a few billion barrels of oil left to figure out what that could be, and to put it into effect. otherwise... we're fucked.

  • What pisses me off, is when I try to use less oil, by riding a bike for transport and some scumbag comes along in their gas guzzling SUV and tries to intimidate me. We should simply ration oil, according to where people live and what they do, and use less and less in transition away from oil. We waste too much oil, and we should encourage those who use less, and penalise those people who are energy gluttons, simple really.

  • I think it's funny how industrial hemp is illegal. People argue that you can't use corn or other food crops for ethanol / biodiesel yet nobody mentions how industrial hemp could be grown and transformed from anything to a 2x4 or a sheet of plyboard (from the stalk) to ethanol and biodiesel (from the pulp) and also flour and oil (from the seeds). All that without having to use any chemical pesticide or fertilizer. Crop after crop, year after year. Oh wait, now i remember why its illegal.

  • just think humans could have driven dirtbikes and go carts and scooters and mopeds around for the next million years at least instead of wasting all the oil in 200 years

  • It has been some good fun intill now. The end of peak fun 2008.

  • Just reduce the World's population to a couple of hundred millions - and we plenty of "fossil fuels" for those who are left behind !!!

  • "A couple of hundred millions"? 200 millions is just what we growth during the last 9 years. With no oil, and it will ocurr in 20 years or less, we will not be able to feed more than 1/6 of our current population (about 6 billion). 1 billion survives, 5 billion die... maths are cruel.

  • I've been studying "Peak Oil" since 2005. I accidentally run into its website while doing research on "Free energy". Since then I lost interest on main stream science and just focus my brain on how to survive the inevitable collapse of our present civilization.

  • I'm in your same situation; and it is not easy. We'll probably face a re-ruralization of the population, and it is quite likely the appearance of feudal systems, and an impressionant amount of violence. I honestly think that our only realistic chance is the organization of solid communities, and the rescue of traditional agriculture, proabbly combined with alternative energies, and, over all, LESS use of energy.

  • Por cierto, algunos filipinos aún hablan español. ¿Es tu caso?

  • @IloiloWindEnergyLtd Same thing came to my mind, and I'm pretty sure that the world population will decrease below 1billion after the economy collapse. The big question is, who will be that 1 billion? Surviving is not going to be easy...

  • Hello Mr. Heinberg,

What about biodiesel and ethanol from algae? (Please google Sapphire Energy, Solazyme, Algenol). Thank you for commenting.

  • For answers to all your "what about's" please visit:

  • Been there and done that. Neither Roscoe Bartlett nor Matt Savinar nor Jim Kunstler address the feasibility of getting biodiesel and ethanol from algae.

  • And we are going to run the industrial world on biodiesel from algae? Like to the tune of 86 million barrels a day? Have any of these people done the emergy analysis on it? Go to Wikipedia and search for the article on emergy. Read Howard T. Odum's book A Prosperous Way Down. He nails it.

  • ok why dont you go out there and figure out how to economically produce these things, nobody else is, if its so easy why dont you figure it out, youll make billions.
