  • The level of the interviewer is low.

They don't understand a message of Miyazaki.

    インタビュアーは、もののけ姫に込められたメッセージがわかってない。

    もののけ姫はどう考えてもハッピーエンドだ。

    サンとアシタカが結婚したら皆ドン引きだよ。

  • he is so intelligent and wise, it seems he always looks the same too, same white beard, same white hair ^^. I remember the day I looked on the stupid wikipidea page that told me he died (he hasn't, yet) and I started bawling, realizing how much the world would miss a man like him. I was soooo glad when I heard he hadnt died and I also decided to quit wikipedia XD

  • We need, humanity needs, more people like him; more people who are willing and capable of educating growing generations without any inbuilt contempt, without any sense of patronage. People, who actually have faith in those to whom they speak and who trust the intelligence in development.

  • Anyone realize when Hayao Miyazaki syas something, then a person asks something but then Miyazaki suddenly says something and the other person has nothing to say anymore ..

  • to the people still sitting when miyazaki walked in: "STAND UP ASSHOLES!!!"

  • It seems like only other animators truely appreciate him.

  • A lot of you are showing hypocritical ignorance by saying all Americans are stupid and don't understand Miyazaki because a couple journalists asked him unintelligent questions. All media people from any culture are dim-witted!

    btw Miyazaki's films are marvelous!

  • Damn this guys the best looove his movies

  • So he just spoke in Japanese in front of an entirely Canadian crowd? There was no translator or translation on the screen or anything? What was the point of him speaking anyway?

  • 1st Animator seems like a very respectful man :) 2nd guy seems like a pretty fun cool guy to talk to and final guy seems like a nice person to chat with. And Miyazaki is just cool to be around with all the time :D

  • 4:48

That guy seemed cool though :D

    Hajimemashite haha XD

  • Damn .. what's with the guy who asks a question to the great director by having his hand at his chin in such a rude posture! and "biolant phor tchildran"?? goodness , it's such an inspiration show and it's in 2D ! Hand drawn ! nothing compared to 3D's nowadays that only all relies on the computer. Damn show some appreciation

  • I think Princess Monoke was my favorite film. :) Even though it was quite weird and disturbing at times, I think it had the best story.

  • Japanese people are really mature. They inspire me. The world can really learn things from them.

  • tot toro tot toro !

  • Genuis!!! Nothing more to say ^_^

  • if i meet him, i'm gonna cry like crazy

  • I hope he doesn't become part of the mainstream...

If he does....I will give up on disney entirely.

Walt is gone....and soon Miyazaki will no longer be the Japan's Walt...

Its hard to find good animated movies now its very saddening.

  • @LightAmongstDarkness I find Miyazaki better than Walt personallity wise, art wise and story wise.

  • I just love the commentator voice !

  • I' m surprised at the rudeness of journalist!! when she talk about violence in mononoke?? because of blood?? i'm wondered if nippon manga has created a violent poeple!!i'm so sorry!! i think that all the violence come from hollywood !

  • His work is beautiful. He is so humble because he knows his place in life whereas the people who are laughing are so closed minded to other cultures and new ideas. It doesn't make sense to argue the characters? you simply can not take a single character out of his films because they all perfectly fit together. That's the reason he can't give because it would just confuse people more =b Miyazaki is Brilliant.

  • I got to see his talk in California for the Ponyo release!

Admittedly he didn't seem thrilled at the big crowds, but I'd be nervous in front of so many people...

Wait... seriously? You can't understand a character that's neither evil or good?

  • disney ain't got shit on studio ghibli...until pixar was created....pixar actually learned from miyaki's works that's why they're successful..

  • Shut up you weebos stop disrespecting your country

  • Walt Disney is a fucking joke compared to Hayao Miyazaki

  • Comment removed

  • does hayao miyazaki speak any english ????

  • @chantipanda123 he said "hello" in the intro to Spirited Away with john lasstor

  • I hope Hayao Miyazaki will make more movies ! He is awesome :) Long live Miyazaki :)

  • HOW DARE THEY COMPARE MIYAZAKI-SAMA'S WORK WITH DISNEY!!! I am mad >_<

  • @dramasweety they both work in animation and have made made movies that are well respected in their home country...even though Miyazaki is a GOD and disney is a mere mortal...

  • @dtrainduran I wouldn't say that they are both gods! I mean I will say Miyazaki is better because he makes his own stories which Disney should do but both have amazing animation.

  • @NelmanPete hence why I said that Disney is a mere mortal and Miyazaki is a god....

  • "The average moviegoer seeks for a winner", a clear difference between the "goodies" and the "baddies". Why? Because Americans are DUMB. Americans believe in the black/white model of the universe, and they need some idiotic chiche hero poorly developed rolemodel to root for. Not Miyazaki. He RESPECTS the audience's intelligence, but there's no such thing in America.

  • Wow its so interesting to see how miyazaki thinks about his movies himself... The most amazing part was when he explained the developpment of the relationship between Shitaka and San, far after the end of the movie. This proves that he actualy can put himself in their position. No doubt hes the most talented anime producer ever.

  • @tatsurain07 *Ashitaka

  • stupid ass lame questions they ask him...

  • @kkdkk7 I feel sorry for you :(

  • @kkdkk7 what whyy would you hate hayao miyazaki he is amazing!!

  • @TohruNoOnigiri

Miyazaki is so talented , he is so handsome , he is so hot - - you make me sick !

All these ass-kissing is just nauseating.

  • @kkdkk7 ...um i dont think hes hot or anything like that i just think he is talented i love his art work is that the only reason why you dont like him just cause he gets alot of credit of course he would hes a master! or do you just not like him cause hes japanese ?lol

  • @TohruNoOnigiri

Most Japanese pple are nice, except those who committed crimes during WWII and those who refuse to apologise for the crimes of their ancestors.

But, most Japanese are nice and talented pple. Miyazaki has nothing to do with WWII.

  • @kkdkk7 but...we werent talking about WWII in the first place lol...

  • Omg, Hayao Miyazaki and Roger Elbert? greatest film maker and greatest film critic together at the same time.

  • Living genius.

  • EHHH?!?!?! HE WAS IN CANADA?!?!! oh well i was only about 2 years old when he did...lol

    (i'm canadian)

  • he actually doesnt like Walt Disney

  • @dtrainduran Walt Disney's films love to portraying the world as a fairy land, and there is only two type of people good and evil. Miyazaki's films however giving defination to characters and their actions.

  • @Gatousuky yes I know, he portays people as people, they are not all good or evil.

  • @dtrainduran That's what I like about miyazaki! ^^

  • @Gatousuky Not just Walt Disney's. Most American cinema does that.

  • @dtrainduran Yeah he only liked the early films which I don't know why he doesen't like their classic films they were some of the best films ever. He also said that Osamu Tezuka, killed animation when he animated his stories. Kind of funny when Osamu, was a million times better then Miyazaki, personal wise and in art/story wise. Plus if it wasen't for Tezuka, the anime eyes would never of been created well Walt Disney's Bambi was the original thing that started it but you know what I mean.

  • Wow he talks like a wise-man, really cool.

I hope he keeps up his good work ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Violence? Really? I think they're making him feel uncomfortable saying that.

  • He's an awesome director. Me and all my friends thinks so.

  • I love his work but not sure if I like the person I heard he's a jerk but I don't know what to believe from jerks on the internet.

  • @futureanimatior He's not a jerk.

  • Interviewers are stupid lol. It isn't too violent for kids, as far as I know kids love his movies! Besides all his films are to inspire children which he has done a great job doing. And he doesen't like being called the Japanese Walt Disney, mainly because he doesen't like Disney movies. Because they never have their own orginal story line I can't really blaime him. I love Disney movies but I wish they had their own story lines instead of stories from novels.

  • when normal people communicate with extremely intelligent people it's embarassing to watch :(

  • @Unremarkable1000 It's quite sad how these Disney Animators are very talented draftsmen and workers yet they barely get credit for the great job they do /: I bet all 3 of them worked on the best Disney movies Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Lion King :)

  • @Unremarkable1000 IT really is true, and its a sad case that pure talent should be doused by those so unimaginative in comparison.

  • Miyazaki-san is so polite and humble, while the interviewers are a blabbering, insolent and rude crowd, trying to put him down. I'm ashamed on behalf of the western world.

You can SEE in his eyes that he's a genius. Disney is nothing compared to the depth in Miyazaki's films.

  • @thatSaori I agree Disney was great but Miyazaki is just amazing :D

  • @thatSaori Dude; if interviewers sat there and complemented Miyazaki, you'd have learned nothing from the interview. Watch almost any short interview with a person famous as a serious artist, and you'll see the same thing: The role of the journalist is always to be a little pressing. That's how it works the world over.

  • @BenMcCormack91 I'm not talking about complementing him. I'm simply talking about being polite. You can be pressing without being impolite.

  • @thatSaori How do you mean? I mean, it's not like they interrupt him or yell or roll their eyes at him. They say things that challenge him to justify himself; that's a technique in journalism, not a lack of politeness.

  • @BenMcCormack91 No, and I know that. But I think that around 3:30 there was a woman who asked a question, and while he was trying to explain himself she interrupted him. Also, I was just stricken by this whole video series (see part 2) how completely incompetent Disney seems compared to Miyazaki-san's films.

  • @thatSaori well I don't see in that way. I see it in a sense that....well imagine being new to these films as an adult and seeing that alot of unconventional things work. Not only that, you become a fan of these films and the man responsible for them comes over to meet you. I'm pretty sure you might not know how to react, you might be so curious about many things that he does that you'll ask even stupid things.

  • @Coatl360 That's very insightful of you.

But honestly, I don't believe these interviewers are mere beginners in the interviewing department - therefore it seems highly unlikely that they would ask "stupid" things. I think they know what things to ask and I'm sure they've even been given guidelines for what their respective paper wants.

  • @thatSaori Umm.. I don't see them being rude or insolent. They are simply pointing out differences between Miyazaki's unique direction style, i.e. multi faceted characters and story lines, and common conventions of America animation, like seen in Disney. So of course, their questions would 'seem' rude in our eyes as we are avid followers of Miyazaki's films. But really, they are just exploring questions or thoughts that many new viewers to his films would have.

  • @iheartwaku I think the way they acted was rude. The interviewers interrupted him, and an asian (not American) asked him if the movie "wasn't bit too violent for children".

The female interviewer (which you clearly can hear hasn't got English as her first language) then proceeded to continue on the subject of violence. I don't see how they were pointing out differences in the American vs Japanese conventions since the ones who I thought were rude weren't even Americans themselves.

  • @thatSaori Interviewers didn't actually act too rude but the animators of Walt Disney were very respectful to Miyazaki.

  • @futureanimatior I think the interviewers were rude, and that's it.

The animators were polite. I never said they werent.

  • @thatSaori Ah my bad than makes sense though since American interviewers are always rude to anyone.

  • @futureanimatior The interviewers weren't even American...

  • @thatSaori That's odd since he was in America interviewing him.

  • @futureanimatior I know, it is. But you can clearly hear that they're not native Americans. Since a lot of journalists from different countries go to other countries to collect information for articles and such, it's not really that surprising that Miyazaki was interviewed by non-Americans in America...

  • @thatSaori Eh, i wouldn't say that...you know Miyazaki, like many Japanese masters of animation, was inspired by the work of Mr. Walt Disney. Though i understand your point of view...Miyazaki and his work attract many fervent admirer's, of which i am one as well...

  • @guthax30 Actually Miyazaki hates Disney movies because of their lack of story telling. Although I don't see how he would dislike Disney movies when there so magical. The generation was passed from Walt Disney to Osamu Tezuka to Hayao Miyazaki.

  • @futureanimatior Wow. Don't speak like you are Miyazaki. He doesn't said even one words that he hates Disney. He even visited their studios. He and Lasseter are good fren. Omg you're so ignorant. Disney is good (magically), but lack of creativity. The only creativity comes now from U.S. is Pixar and Dreamworks studio, which they claim they are inspired mostly from Miyazaki. I'm not saying Miyazaki is taking all the credit, but to say that he hate Disney is like saying he hate Animation.

  • @kienez I'm not Miyazaki and I don't want to be like Miyazaki. I'm not being arragant it's a fact I read it on one website I forget the name but it had facts about Hayao Miyazaki. It even said that he does not like Disney because of the story telling. And he was a fan of Tezuka but says he ruined anime animation i'm just telling you what I heard so no need to judge me. Unlike others I actually do my reasearch before I speak out. And I know that he and John are good friends so stop judging me.

  • @futureanimatior There's a difference between not liking disney and not liking being compared to disney. Disney lacks in story today because of the fact that story is determined by counsel. A film can't be offending in any way anymore. The counsel tries to make it appeal to everyone, but loses every bit of story it might have had initially. Disney still has the goldbergs, and that's all i need to still have faith that they are capable of quality work.

  • @thatSaori You are ashamed on behalf of the western world?

  • @pelida77 Rather on behalf of the interviewers, because they're westerners. I'm not sure if you know this, but Japan is a bit xenophobic and I think that the interviewers' attitudes and rude westerners just makes it worse.

  • @thatSaori relax there. Why would you be ashamed on behalf of the whole western world? thats big words, and we're many people in the western world who loves Miyazaki, and thinks hes a genious. Sure there are some idiots but aren't there idiots no matter what part of the world you go to?

  • @ImFreakingAwesome1 I should've phrased it somewhat differently; nevertheless, I'm ashamed. Because I'm quite interested in Japan and their traditions, the interviewers attitudes feel so wrong.

I never said there wasn't any idiots in any part of the world. I was simply expressing my irritation.

The main point of my comment isn't about how I'm taking the blame for the western world - I'm stating my opinion of Disney and Miyazaki and what I thought about the interviewers.

  • Comment removed

  • @thatSaori u speak the word of truth. amen

  • "Violence is innate in humans. The real issue is how to control it." -Hayao Miyazaki. Such a lesson... One of the most important points of Mononoke Hime, I think. And yeah, I also think he's far better than Disney (don't get me wrong, I love classical Disney movies, but Ghibli is, in my humble opinion, the best animating studio in the world)

  • I know this doesn't sound very nice, but I never want him to retire :)

  • @MorgrasCurse Don't worry. He said he will do films until he literally can't anymore.

  • 4:55 nice totoro shirt

  • I wish they'd stop fucking comparing his films to the usual lousy disney plots.

  • He's such a bad ass

  • アニメが善と悪がはっきり分かれていないとショックを受けるアメリカ・・・

  • lol what a low level question they asked. No wonder Disney can only portray carton big hero vs evil, so American like. us vs terroirst shit.

  • @ThisIsDream no not American at all, im an American and i love his movies. And dont compare something like that to a fucking war.

  • @ThisIsDream Haha, i feel like there two camps in the world of animations fandom: the Japanese animation camp, and the American animation camp. Both are rather equal culturally and aesthetically. A preference for one over the other has more to do with personal taste than anything. Saying Miyazaki is superior to Walt disney or vice versa is silly and inconsequential...its kind of against the spirit of animation and film making to begin with...

  • @ThisIsDream

What was low about the questions asked? They were trying to learn from him. If he had an issue I am sure he would have not answered. Don't be so quick to dismiss what Disney does. A lot of people criminalize them, but you should really think about the combined effort of all the Artist. I can't tell you not to like Disney, but they have a formula the way Miyazaki has a formula.

  • What will I do when Miyazaki retires...? I've already watched all of his films numerous times (especially Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away, my faaavorites). D; I wish he could just make these fantastic films forever...

  • @claire1909 --- me too

  • No doubt tha Hayao Miyazaki is Japapn's Treasured artist!!!!

  • "ridiculously long 2 hours and 13 minutes"??? Boy! What is he saying? I wish that film was at least 4 hours long! What a film! "Princess Mononoke" is my absolute favourite. He's a genius! Definitely better than Disney! I love how he portraits Nature and its pollution and destruction by our so called civilization. Long live Miyazaki! Long live Mother Nature!!!

  • LONG LIVE Hayao Miyazaki!!!!!

  • The interviewed don't get that the image isn't simply black and white for a reason.

It makes the viewers/audience think to themselves of the senario.

They also don't get that this type of film is not always for young children to look and understand as many of the situation there is quite complex.

    Hayao miyazaki looks really nervous.

I wonder what's going through his head...

  • He answers some questions directly, so he seems to understand english to an extent but chooses not to speak it himself. Either that or they use smart cuts or other tricks.

  • he was really nervers at the stage! quite cute actually for an old man!

  • @oberonson18 --- yeah i always found him cute

  • I LOVE MIYAZAKI!

but i feel bad for him that he has to have a traslater for him to talk to the americans! Like when he said a joke it took the american awhile to get it!

    XD

  • なぜアニメの中の暴力的表現を禁じているアメリカは殺人事件が多いのだろう。

  • His movies are too violent for American children?...AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Kids know how to have sex by nine and you say the movies are too violent?!

  • @megarock81 i knw ryt? americans just leave der kids unattended lol.

  • @megarock81 my friend told me they have sex like at age seven

  • @queenofsheba1000 I wouldnt be too surprised

  • @megarock81 they show anything on tv

  • This man is a true artist.

  • Comment removed

  • C'mon now, that's totally a diss to say someone fails at life, even it is in comparision. Especially since such a statement is subjective at best.

Talented as Miyazaki is, I'll only consider him a genius when he learns how to speak without preaching.

  • people should really learn that animated movies are not just 'happliy ever after'. cause there not. Miyazaki is also much better than anything Disney could ever HOPE to make. And if you ask me, the newest movie 'The Princess and the Frog' is disney trying to be more like him. Not in the animating, but in the story line. if you haven't heard about it, apprenty theres a witch-doctor. That kinda rings a bell from the movie 'Spirited away' and 'Howles Moving Castle'.

    anyone agree with me?

  • If you Knew anything about what you were speaking you would relize that Walt Disney at that time was inventing something that wasnt even in existent!! for you to say "Miyazaki" is alot better than" Disney" its like saying "Nicola tesla" was alot smarter than "leonardo Da vinci" - they used what they had

  • That's just my oppion. I'm not trying to bash Disney. All I'm saying is that Miyazaki's films speak to me more than Disney. I do not mention any of the older work, I just am also saying that I think Disney NOW DAYS is trying to learn from him. I do know what I am talking about, but I'm not saying it is 100% true. It depens on who you grew up with. I grew up with Miyazaki's films, so it's not that common I favor him over Disney. When I say Disney, I DO mean the company. Not Walt Disney.

  • Yes I agree Miyazakis films are extremely well done and the new age of artists working for Disney should be trying to learn something from him! but you must realize miyazaki Is relatively new to animation and would have been able to get inspiration from alot of classic disney movies when he was young, becuase their were quite a few released even before he could animate! just something to think about!

  • @nhojproductions i agree

  • this man is a genius...

  • I would like to meet him just so I could express how much I love his beard. :D

  • 7:05

    Miyazaki's face.

"What the hell am I doing this for?"

  • Holy fuck, the movie's 2 hours and 13 minutes? I really never noticed that when I watched Mononoke, and I've watched it a lot. So that's props to him for knowing how to keep somebody interested for that long after numerous viewings. Him and Joe Hisaishi are an amazing team.

  • wait, the movie was over 2 hours?!?!?! OH MY GOD I NEVER NOTICED!!!

  • Same!! o-o

  • he creates every aspect of his movies from script to screen hands on, unlike Walt Disney who more or less just over saw everything and then put his stamp of approval on it, sort of like a slap your name on everything make sell Speilburg thing. Miyazaki also majored in economics not art school, he was a natural, some of the most incredabley animated scenes in Princess mo. were down smokeing a cigarrett cracking jokes and with a camera man be hind him.

  • Sorry bud but Miyazaki is on record and quoted as hateing what Disney has done to the true meaning of fairy tales, Miyazaki him self has said Walt Disney was a great producer, and he was, My point is that Miyazaki acutally draws and animates him self as the film goes along, he invest his whole self in the film to the point where he is exausted, Walt Disney did not draw in the cartoons and in later films rarely even met with the animaters, he was busy with the movies and Disney land.

  • @Dalen77 Hmmm...well, sorry to tell you Disney was an Artist in his movies as well as the director. Niether is better than the other. You can't compare them because they are so differrent, the fact is neither copies anything from eachother and Disney was the first to animate drawings into feature films. That doesn't mean Miyazaki was copying. Japan was just a little behind when it came to animating movies, and no Miyazaki doesn't "hate" Disney, he just doesn't like being compaired.

  • You dont understand Disney could not draw like Miyazaki could, nor could Disney animate like Miyazaki could. Did Disney imagine and write and conceptualize any of his movies. Hardly, maybe some of his early films with Mickey that were in black and white. After that Disney found and discovered the best talent in the country and mangaged the artist very well, to get the most out of them. Again Japan did not have the freedom to create like the US till after the Atomic bomb was dropped.

  • His IQ must be 160.

  • He's obviously uncomfortable with all the fandom and fame he generates. Absolute legend

  • i dont get how the guy couldnt keep track of who was doing right in the film because its pretty obviousand besides that's what i like about miyasaki's films , they just have a great story line that isnt always like what people say it should be but is good, realistic in ways showing a weakness in even the hero type figure

  • I love Miyazaki-sensei!

At some scenes he seems uncomfortable! I feel bad!

I think that he makes the stories how it will be in reality!

  • my favourite person on this planet. ever.

  • Miyazaki Hayao is GOD

  • They are some really annoying interviewers!

"Don't you think the film is too voilent for kids?"

Anyone can watch cartoons, not just kids! The only thing is, Anime is watched in Japan by a broad age gap, whilst in America they see animation aimed for children.

  • Animation in Americans eyes = too young for adults, animation is for children.

Huh? Anyone can (and do) love animated films. And some can be for adults. I was eight when I watched Princess Mononoke on T.V and I loved it. I think it's more the parents who are worried.

  • yeah dude it looks like he was really pissed off at some of the question i hope he dont hate the united state now because we arent all like that lol

  • No, but he doesn't like being called 'the Japanese Walt Disney'. And in any case, at least in my opinon, he is far better than Disney.

  • @MistyAnimalMad ---- i agree

  • @MistyAnimalMad true!

  • @MistyAnimalMad Agreed Disney be better if they made their own stories and didn't have such cheezy endings. But Miyazaki is the best film maker ever hopefully he will continue to make more :)

  • I imagine there were many more people with misconceptions about animation/anime 12 years ago during the time of this recording. One can only hope things have improved since then

  • In many ways though, I think that's better. Chances are most adults will accompany children to see animated films anyway, and as you know, most animated films do deal with quite adult themes. Children aren't idiots. They won't get to see reality presented in any other way than in animated films. I was three years old when I saw the Lion King and learned about death. My little cousin was five and understood that fact that the couple in Up couldn't have children. Animation is important for kids

  • well, that's saying a lot since i saw some VERY unappropriate anime when i was five. let's just say i never thought of anime as the same again.

  • The interviewers are very annoying. This is such a stupid criticism:

"To many viewers seeing a character who is not wholly evil or wholly good may be a shock."

I like that his characters aren't black and white, and that the bad aren't absolutely evil.

  • @irragal And it's so stupid when one considers that NO ONE is like that in real life, and the people who try to be turn out to be the most messed up individuals. I hate that Miyazaki's time was wasted with such stupid questions and 'critiques'...I bet the people in this comment list could come up with better questions than that apparently 'qualified' interviewer

  • @ChobitsLuver360 It's idiotic questions...another stupid one was the question about how American audiences love a clear-cut story with a hero they can root for...I would've told the man, "Speak for yourself" lol People forget that Grimm's fairytales were a lot grimmer before they got sanitized by Disney...kids can't 'handle' a lot of the violence that's held back because it's already been decided *for* them that they can't~

  • i wonder if they understood what miyazaki just said... O_o

  • i think i'm going to learn to speak japanese so that i can better understand miyazaki sensei's genius.

  • Geez the interviers are stupid.

obvioiusly the meaning and the pint of the flim is hard to understand for young children. seriously you think that all movies are meant for kids?

After he gave them an answer they basically shut up lol
