I just got my board and yunzi stones this week tuesday. I wash them with the same kinda bowl lol. Don't know why it's funny to me, but it's a fun coincidence.
@SamuelCish send them back to YMI and they will gladly replace it I am sure. Or request more stones. You should have at least 181 black and 180 white. And, yes, some did in fact contain lead. This error was caught and a recall took care of it
I wrote a well researched comment a few days ago, but it looks like it didn't go through... anyways, I did look it up, and the only source I could find saying canola oil was ok was Chiyo dad--and he never gives a reason. On the other hand, I found multiple sites mentioning Canola oil SPECIFICALLY as an oil NOT to use; that would also include the booklet that came with my Yunzi stones.
You're right about traditional cooking oils, but canola oil has special properties that still allow them to be used. Oils like vegetable oil and olive oil will cause those effects. Maybe a bit more research is in order :p
Also, an explanation on the previous comment below that I just made: cooking oils are based on something that will
A) Rot over time
B) HARDEN.
B is especially important (the two are related, I believe), as it will cause the stones to become sticky over time, and while it doesn't ruin the stones, you'll have to spend a long time washing the oil from them, which will suck. Soap will make that easier if you have to, but I don't like the idea of using soap on these...
WARNING: This video is incorrect. Cooking oils are to be avoided! This according to: the care booklet that comes with stones from YM Imports; I just purchased a set of Yunzis with a Bamboo board from them. (I won't use oil--my fingers will oil them over time.)
Also, it says there to wash with water--it does not say soap, and I wouldn't presume soap is necessary. You do need to do it thoroughly. I hand rubbed and dried each stone. Took 20-30 minutes, just a couple seconds with each. (Just once.)
Actually, according to the wikipedia article on Yunzi, Canola oil should not be used, as it will go rancid. This video seems pretty ignorant. I know it also says to use soap on the wikipedia article, but I'd advise washing without soap. There's no advantage, as you're not trying to kill germs.
yunzi is awesome! I just got mine on monday :DDDDDDD thanks for the video, it helped me in cleaning the stones ^_^ holding up the black stones in the light is so fun ^_^
It says towards end ^^. Hold up a black stone to a powerful light and if you can a green tint around the edges then it is yunzi (which means the white ones are too, since they come in a set)
i have a question, if u used soap and oil won't the stones smell? or maybe i'm wrong, just wondering. nice video btw, i still need to get myself a go set :P

would heat extracted coconut oil be good to use (your average non organic non virgin coconut oil)? it does not go sticky and is odorless.

They don't smell at all =D. The stones are the best stones I have played with (better than clam) because they never chip =D
