the chimp dosnt recognize the objects as numbers, it just sees objects that he recognizes as images which is easier to commit to short term memory, than if you recognize them as a sequential set of data. just my dumb human theory, but it makes some sense, try a human with the same experiment only elementary and unfamiliar objects, and of course some practice that would probably show comparable results.
Anyone knows why the BBC is SO harsh at blocking content when they are not for profit? I can understand if they block things that appear on DVD, like Brian Cox's Wonders of the Solar System, but I believe they block anything they can!
Honestly, if you wanted a home intruder to leave your house, would it be faster to argue and fight them or just start putting your hand in your underwear and throwing poo at them?
@EpicEarn Well the dolphin has a superior brain to most humans, but they are much less knowledgeable. It is like the difference between a first century genius and a twenty first century average.
@KingOfTheBeyond23 can the average child understand TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS? The average child scores better than the average adult on this test. ok then.
the chimp sees the numbers as pictures and humans do not. if you want to do the test and compare the results to humans, you need to characters that do not have a predefined meaning. Also, the chimp has probably been doing this over and over again to get treats for a while now. the gets had probably been only doing it a day... and no treats!
omg its impulsive memorization the reason the kids get it wrong is because they question themselves, i'm not saying i can do it but there looking to hard
@booomhauer Or maybe the chimps realized that flinging poo is a lot more successful in getting rid of unwanted guests compared to arguing or attacking.
He's showing the same behaviour as many Australian near relatives found sitting at poker machines in pubs. They sit mesmerized for hour upon hour tapping colorful buttons on screen, at least the chimp isn't gambling away his house.
its not that amazing you have to take into account how long that chimp sits in there each day if you put a human in there for that long they could do the same thing
Yes. This is the glaring flaw in the experiment. If you read the articles in the video description, you'll learn that new tests have been conducted. It turns out even with moderate practice the human subjects can match Ayumu's performance.
I think chimps have a stronger right brain than we do and therefore are able to capture much more information through their senses, you can also see that the chimp is using his left hand.
@bltnxkrw you are a fool. read the links. the chimps had months of practice, and the humans had NO practice. once the human test subjects were allowed to practice, they equaled the chimps results or exceeded them.
i think its not just the short term memory, i guess its the eye ability to capture everything to our brain and remember the content at once, like a camera, so they dont remember each element. we can do it too, i've seen books and sumone teach this thing.
Not only is the study disputed, but this video makes inaccurate statements about the study. In the portion where the subject was allowed to study the numbers as long as he wanted before pressing, the humans outperformed all apes. In the portion where the numbers were flashed on the screen, the YOUNG chimp outperformed adult humans, while the adult chimp under-performed. However, in another study, humans given the same level of practice as the chimp were able to outperform the young chimp.
it all has to do with language. When we see the numbers we try to remember them by their name and chimps remember them by their shape.I would love to see how a 1 year old that can't speak take the test.
he's been trained through a reward system to do this task. It probably took months if not years to get that good. I'm sure with a couple of days training I could do that.
@cyphi1 it all has to do with language. When we see the numbers we try to remember them by their name and chimps remember them by their shape.I would love to see how a 1 year old that can't speak take the test.
as they say practice makes perfect...any human locked in a cage and every day put on a memory test to get food the same thing over and over again your gonna get good at it
@usoap141 Actually this test is very easily accomplished. It is an old visual memory test mostly seen in Russian psychology books. It has been replaced by Simon Says type of tests because it is easyly defeated. What you have to do is, close you eyes when the numbers are flashing, then draw a pattern with your hand then open eyes and draw the pattern on screen by clicking the boxes. In practice it is done by laying out a bunch of cubes on table then rolling them, then removing them from sight.
@shawwtydaveere Well math is a universal language, you only need teach it the order of symbols (like you were when you were a kid). The test isnt about what the sequence of numbers are but rather quickly remembering their position (when randomized). Which with this chimp...thats fucking incredible that it can remember that much in such a short amount of time
you guys are stubid to let thos ppl tell u chaps smarter than u ! they are not ..thos who showing u been traning daily for 6 months to do this thing ... if u take human and make him train daily for only 2 months he would be even faster than the cham and with letters or pic too not just nummbers ..the humans that doing it in this video are for the first 10-20 times doing it .
u got it worng, we memorise it too the problem is to bring that info to our conscience. There was a similar study were it was shown 4 neutral faces and it roundomly appeard a happy or sad face, in a factal second, most chimps get it right and humans worng, but then the sientists shout down with an iman a part of the human brain(on the back of the head), then the human tested could tell the position and the face that apeard but didnt remember to see it, intresting.
it is proven that chimps achieve this by retaining the 'image of the screen' (like taking a photograph of the screen), instead of memorizing position of individual numbers
such 'photographic' memory is very useful skill in navigating / living / obtaining food in the jungle
@KillerCheebo I'm a chimp. I did this game on the first try with 10 correct. Actually it's pretty easy to do it. The darker the room the brighter the m,onitor the better. Darken your room and brighten your monitor, you will do it on first try. Do the following, press circle, numbers appear on screen close eyes immediately. Draw pattern with your hand from lowest to highest digit. Open eyes draw pattern by clicking the boxes. Voila problem solved. Repeat 10 times. You are smarter than chimp.
@zombiesecurity Being the president of the united states doesn't have anything to do with how intelligent you are... Bush was an idiot, he got elected twice.
Ya right that chimp has been doing this for months probably. A kid that just started wouldn't keep up. Let's have a kid play this for few months and see who's faster.
The game in the video description isn't the same as the chimp's, though; it's easier, as it only tests you on 5 numbers rather than 8 or 9 as seen in the video.
