If the Save Sphere is located in the same map as where you dodge, then no. However, if you if you quit the game, or leave the area (Blitzball counts too I think), then the counter does reset.

if you use the same technique as in this video, it should not take longer than 15-18 minutes to get to 200 it may take a few tries before you get it right. I was not even considering to try and get the Venus Sigil before i saw this video.

For those having problems with this, my best tip is...
...don't count the dodges. Look at the clock. What time is it? Start dodging. Dodge until half an hour passes. Once then, I recommend you to keep dodging. You should be safe, though, if you have been dodging in a "many strikes" area. After a single try, my best was over 100, but less than 150. After a second try, I got 169 strikes. Also, never anticipate the lightning. Wait until you see the flash. Otherwise, you're going to fail.
Here's a tip: When you press the button makes sure YOU DON'T TAP IT, when you press down just hold it and you'll dodge them every single time, then get back into position and repeat above

The timing can be defficult to learn, you must be very precise. Before the flash comes the screen turns whit(er) than normal and if you click at that point the lightning will hit you regardless of your next press on X. This is the "Anti-Cheat" function.
The timing window is very small, so you need more practice :)
I got bad karma doing this shitty sidequest. Took me 2-3 days straight, practicing and finding the sweet spot to dodge. I am sure cumulatively it was more than 1300 dodges (adding up the failed ones including a 197!!). On the last day I woke up and immediately started dodging up to 250+. Saved the game and went to bed again, in a little more than an hour, heavy rain started pouring with loud thunderstorms and lightning, and this all happened in SUMMER!
Well it was just a repitative pattern - like maxing out Aeons Stats are. I've learned to stay focused through such kind of "repitativeness" - it sounds weird, but it is very very helpful. Not to mention the dodged pr. minute rate this "pattern" has.

If you got godhand, and win against mimic in omega ruins, you'll get 100k guild, and some extra for the other mobs as well. Without Godhand, that amount is only the half of it.
This method is reliable and free, and very easy to pull off, but there are other methods too. Like using arena, kill some of the bosses and sell equip/items.
@chickmagnetv sell your old weapons and the ones you dont need. fight in all the areas to get weapons and sell them. use rikkus gil-steal ability she learns it quite quickly. just fight like crazy.
I did 160,180,and 198 about two days ago and i was kinda piss not to much caues it was pretty danm funny that I was that close. After that I did it today one more time and I DID IT 242. this guy is just a noob...I made 1538 in a row and have all sigils and crests and all my characters have 9999/9999 hp and 999/999 mp and i have all aeons and all their attributes.the highest aeon ever hit was...i forgot his name but he is locked with chains and i have 1,568,284,1 on abyss worm...just wierd how i got that.anyway my best character is Tidus.He hit over 15000 in a hit.I also have all Al Bhed alphabet.Captured all monsters and made every monster there is.Note: I completed the game!
*I dropped up their hp. I stopped at 25 k, not a single lvl on Yuna, exept the 255 luck ^_^. That's because i lvl their stat so that when i lvl yuna they will hit 99 999Hp/9999mp, but what is your lvl'ng tactic?
[Character luck] - [Enemy luck] = percentage of critical hit, percentage of hitting, percentage of dodging an attack.
You can have 255 luck, no accuracy and evasion, and each hit will deal double and always land, then you can use the 124 extra spherenotes to fill with Hp notes, thus gettin' 99 999 Hp :) I however choose to max all stats, so Yuna gives more buff to Aeons.
I'm not total on how evasion, accuracy works though, i cannot hack into the game after all.
@thedamnchicken I never quite understood why anything below 255 isnt acceptable... I didnt have maxed stats by far but I completely DESTROYED those Dark Aeons. Only reason I didn't do Penance was because I find it to be ridiculous to spend several hours on a boss even though its obvious you cant really lose the battle.
I have a big cause & effect. I want Hastega, so I'm leveling up all the characters I have. But I can't because I need to go somewhere but I keep dying in that certain area. So I can't get the Level locks anymore since they ran out. So I can't bribe either, and I can't get No Encounter since I sold it by accident.
I forgot all the other causes D:
2) Okay good... so all I need is spare remotes, some anger classes, and some patience.
I actually think "No Encounter" drops somewhere in Omega Ruins (it Is a really good traning place too).
What you can do is: Do 20 dodges, then breake in Safety Zone/Spot. Then do that 10 times, and a few extra to ensure. Nobody ever said you most do it quickly :)
But for that to work you really need that "No Encounter" : /
i just finished it and i got dodged 251 in a row. this was the first time i ever got venus sigil for lulu. but holy damn i will never ever do that again. lol... yea the method did help. maybe i was doing wrong but for me everytime i went i dodged lightning in the hole and ran out it would only happen for one strike before resetting which means id have to go back into the hole and dodge one again.
If that happens you need to reset, that means you go back to the safety spot. There is also a certain period before you can go into the hole before the trick works, and i don't know the exact time ... yet :(
@thedamnchicken where exactly is the safety spot? if its by a lightning rod tower then im glad i didnt do that. i heard the counter resets if you leave the screen or a bolt strikes when your close to a tower.
But seriously, people should understand that theese rainy sundays , where you can't stalk anyone, you need something not-to-hard-not-complex to kill time with...

you have to capture four each of the big lizard type monsters you find in each area, the ones whose flame breath attack seems to be particularly powerful (if you dont know which, go to mi'ihen oldroad, that version is called a vouivre). If you get four of each one, go to the monster arena again and youll be given 99 purifying salts, so you can customise your no encounters ability. Hope this helps :)
true, but they serve as an infinite source, as opposed to the single source of the monster arena. plus with master thief, you'll only steal rare items and get one every time (although admittedly the 30 pendulums are hard to get)
Master tonberry in the omega ruins can be bribed for 960k in the omega ruins for 3. Ultima Weapon can be bribed for 1.4 million for 99. Nelslug can be killed for 1, overkilled for 2. The process just either takes lots of money (which shouldn't be a problem with all the mimics in omega ruins) or lots of time, but well worth it. I wish there was a "overdrive->gil" ability though...
oh, right, haha. Sadly, the only ways to get purifying salt is to either unlock fafnir in the arena (mentioned above) or by the monks...although you only need 1 piece of armor with no encounters and you're set for the game
Well.... i found out before i found out about gameFAQ's...sadly, since i simply bribed the whole game (and wrote down) to get all the items i needed :(
3) Kill mimics in Omega Ruins until you have 1.4 million gil or more.
4) Bribe Ultima Weapon for 1.4 mil. (Make sure you steal 30 or 40 Doors to the Future first.) Save a few hundred gil in case it doesn't stick and keep bribing.
5) Use the pendulums to customize Master Thief on Rikku's armor (or someone else who can steal)
6) Steal 99 Purifying Salt from Fallen Monks in Zanarkand Ruins.

No, i'm no n00b. Sure 1500 is alot, good you did it that far :)
Everything less than 99999 is not a hit - it's a joke. Same goes for stats (lower than 255 isn't acceptable).
Rikku and Kimahris Overdrives are the best IMO, they give good effects.
Quick Hit gives highter turns/dmg, compared to Overdrives - these should only be used as Finishers when you know thy enemy dies.
Animas dmg is 16 hits (dealt not shown), each hit is cumulated if "short mode" on Overdrives.

@thedamnchicken I never quite understood why anything below 255 isnt acceptable... I didnt have maxed stats by far but I completely DESTROYED those Dark Aeons. Only reason I didn't do Penance was because I find it to be ridiculous to spend several hours on a boss even though its obvious you cant really lose the battle.

1) Yes you can, by getting 30 Purifying Salt --> customize --> No EnCounter
Those can be bribed or won through Arena. but i can't seem to remember right now
2) Nope, but you'll surely get hit alot, since you easely loose concentration on what you were doing before the battle ... And it is time consuming.

I have a big cause & effect. I want Hastega, so I'm leveling up all the characters I have. But I can't because I need to go somewhere but I keep dying in that certain area. So I can't get the Level locks anymore since they ran out. So I can't bribe either, and I can't get No Encounter since I sold it by accident.
I forgot all the other causes D:

I actually think "No Encounter" drops somewhere in Omega Ruins (it Is a really good traning place too).
What you can do is: Do 20 dodges, then breake in Safety Zone/Spot. Then do that 10 times, and a few extra to ensure. Nobody ever said you most do it quickly :)
But for that to work you really need that "No Encounter" : /

i just finished it and i got dodged 251 in a row. this was the first time i ever got venus sigil for lulu. but holy damn i will never ever do that again. lol... yea the method did help. maybe i was doing wrong but for me everytime i went i dodged lightning in the hole and ran out it would only happen for one strike before resetting which means id have to go back into the hole and dodge one again.

If that happens you need to reset, that means you go back to the safety spot. There is also a certain period before you can go into the hole before the trick works, and i don't know the exact time ... yet :(

@thedamnchicken where exactly is the safety spot? if its by a lightning rod tower then im glad i didnt do that. i heard the counter resets if you leave the screen or a bolt strikes when your close to a tower.

That is not true, the counter is only reset if you leave the area, or ofc. get struck.
Safety spot resets the TIMER that determines when a bolt should hit.

tip: turn off ALL GAME SOUND. note, all game sound.
if you're in the living room, turn on the tv(if you have 2) to make some 'background' or 'white' noise.
when pressing X/O (depending on your version) use index or middle finger instead of thumb.
having an overly quiet environment can be your downfall. one slight but significant sound can put you off.
light travels faster than sound so if sound is turned on, you register the light signals in your eyes and sounds in your ears.might confuse ya

you have to capture four each of the big lizard type monsters you find in each area, the ones whose flame breath attack seems to be particularly powerful (if you dont know which, go to mi'ihen oldroad, that version is called a vouivre). If you get four of each one, go to the monster arena again and youll be given 99 purifying salts, so you can customise your no encounters ability. Hope this helps :)

true, but they serve as an infinite source, as opposed to the single source of the monster arena. plus with master thief, you'll only steal rare items and get one every time (although admittedly the 30 pendulums are hard to get)

Yes, Master Thief is ingenious (but shouldn't be equipped on main armor).
I think you can bribe it somewhere; but haven't played for a year now...

Master tonberry in the omega ruins can be bribed for 960k in the omega ruins for 3. Ultima Weapon can be bribed for 1.4 million for 99. Nelslug can be killed for 1, overkilled for 2. The process just either takes lots of money (which shouldn't be a problem with all the mimics in omega ruins) or lots of time, but well worth it. I wish there was a "overdrive->gil" ability though...

oh, right, haha. Sadly, the only ways to get purifying salt is to either unlock fafnir in the arena (mentioned above) or by the monks...although you only need 1 piece of armor with no encounters and you're set for the game

good trick :
1) Turn off noise ( so you dont need to be fooled by the lightning noises)
2) Turn off lights ( you can respond to the light flash easier.
3) Go near a save point in case you miss. It might happen so it is a good back-up

My method for No Encounters
1) Get the airship
2) Get Rikku's Godhand (optional)
3) Kill mimics in Omega Ruins until you have 1.4 million gil or more.
4) Bribe Ultima Weapon for 1.4 mil. (Make sure you steal 30 or 40 Doors to the Future first.) Save a few hundred gil in case it doesn't stick and keep bribing.
5) Use the pendulums to customize Master Thief on Rikku's armor (or someone else who can steal)
6) Steal 99 Purifying Salt from Fallen Monks in Zanarkand Ruins.
7) Customize No Encounters
