i didnt grow up playing much hockey, nor am i a huge hockey fan, but it seems ridiculous to me to have a 20 year old competing against a 16 year old in a brutal contact sport. the difference in physical maturity and development is huge. Most athletes aren't fully developed until they reach there 20's... hell i've met kids who haven't even hit puberty till 16.

he was going for a clean shoulder to shoulder hit. the player turned his back when the guy hitting was about 3 feet away. the hitter never left his feet for a head hit. he hit the player in back of his shoulder leading with his own shoulder. the guy getting hit did not see it coming and was not balanced/ braced for the hit and was a mistake on his part for not being aware of his surroundings on the ice.

To say this is a clean hit.....well....you obviously dont understand hockey. Fanelli put himself in a bad position but as a player you have the responsibilty to control your hits. Throwing an elbow up because you're not going to get a full check on a man is just a non-talented jackasses way of being noticed. All hockey leagues should hand out lifetime suspensions for this sort of thing......theres no room in the game for it. No wonder some think its a barbaric sport when this is what they see.

The injury takes place on the impact of his head hitting the boards. Not on the contact of player on player. It's a shame that he got suspended for the rest of the season and playoffs. He's being punished for finishing a good hard check. Sports leagues need to stop punishing based on extent of injury, and start punishing on the actual act in question. Are you people blind? The hit was clean. A clean hit isn't determined by how much it hurt the player being hit. It's determined by the way the player is hit. It's dirty if "the hitter" jumps, hits from behind, or hits the head in any way. This guy did not hit him in the head, and the only reason it was from behind is because the Kitchener player turned his back. When you're on the ice , you have to protect yourself. You cant turn your back on a guy coming full speed.

Clean hit. I cannot find any evidence to suggest he was seeking to seriously injure (never left his feet, contact was made at shoulder height, albeit to the back, however, Liambas didn't have any time to let up once Fanelli turned to shoot the puck as stated). Turning your back to a checker while he was that close and while moving at that speed is bad judgement by Fanelli. I wish the kid the best, but he's gotta take responsibility also for putting himself in such a vulnerable position.

WOW, many, so many times I argue players had chances and enough time to let up or alternate their decision. Bergeron from behind last year, he turned, but TOTALLY enough time for the D to not nail him from behind, that's just protecting the puck.

HOWEVER, this hit the forward had ZERO ZERO chance of doing anything but following through. Fanelli's downfall was shooting the puck. He's a lefty and by shooting it completely turned his left shoulder. Until that last second turn, it was a head on hit
