My God, I never heard this song before, it is just beautiful and haunting. If Americans of Italian Ancestry had a vote for a National Anthem of Scotland, this would certainly get my vote.
This is how I always remember this song in its original. Lightly sung, a ballad but with a sense of defiance in it. Thats what gave it its strength. Now when I hear it at Scotland games its a foot stamping chant for people with too much to drink. How sad for what was a great wee song.
great song, what are Ulster Scots then? Irish Scot celts , I'm lost on this one. They all faught against the crown then in this song? I'm very confused. Hope someone can help me out here!
@wilsp Ulster Scots were Scottish planters who moved to the North of Ireland, people who live in N.I are sometimes referred to as Ulster Scots and have their own dialect. I doubt if Ulster Scots would ever fight against the crown as they would tend to be more British than any other part of the U.K whic is why Irish nationalists hate Ulster Scots. Scotland actually gets its name from the Irish Scotti tribe who invaded Scotland. We are all Celts at heart.
i am an englishman living in wales, as national anthems go the welsh have the best (in my opinion), i love flower of scotland from listening to it at the start of rugby games - when you get a crowd singing at murrayfield its so powerful and daunting, how i wish the english could have a war cry like yours
now to your version - not what i expected but how beautiful just like your pics, lovely.
also i want to see scots rugby back where it should be. thankyou
Thank you to a dear friend for this anthem.....Oh, Flower of Scotland....when will we see your like again...that fought and died for your wee bit hill and glen? Beautifully done.
I must have been the only Englishwoman at Twickenham watching a six Nations England vs Scotland singing Flower of Scotland. I love the words and the melody - it always brings a lump to the throat and tears to the eyes. It is a really great and beautiful National Anthem.
I'm half Scottish, so proud of that side of my family. I've lived in the south of England all my life but somehow whenever I go to Scotland I feel at home <3
this makes me want to go back to Edinburgh- I went there on vacation last February and I LOVED it- my family has Scottish heritage, and even though I'd never been there before it really felt like coming home in a way. (I love the UK, A LOT. :) )
I'm a Scottish Lass studying in England at the moment and I can't believe how much I miss Scotland I've not seen proper hills for 3 months now england is so flat. In my experience I have noticed that Scotland seems to be the poudest nation I have been to so far and most other nations seem to generally like the Scots. listning to this song has helped alleviate my homesickness a little whilst I was listning to it I could forget that I wasn't there and recognise the pictures as places I have been.
@91VIXEN Just saw your shadow walking down the road, so some part of you is still here. That's good eh? Enjoy your studies and Uni, great years. there's nothing here that can't wait until you come back. When you come back it will be the better for you having been gone (it really does make sense) Go out there and show the world what a great girl Scotland made!
From what I've read "Flower of Scottland" isn't actually their national anthem... in fact they don't have any, but it's played as if it were one usually at rugby or soccer games.
Hello From Canada. 1 in 5 have Scottish Heritage here. We share many great values and not to mention 3 of our Prime Ministers have been Scottish including our first Prime Minister from Glasgow Scotland. It's a shame we don't do much trade as nations because we have much in common.
I worry about having a song to represent my country that has been hijacked by nationalists as a rallying cry against our good neighbours the English. This is not my national anthem but I think there should be a debate about an anthem. I favour Highland Cathedral. As a modern country I think it's vital that we look to the future and get over what happened at Bannockburn 700 years ago. As a folk song Flower of Scotland is a good wee tune but it should not be promoted as our anthem because we can
im welsh and as far as im concerned wales and scotland are brothers. but then again the english deserve some respect. however hard that is for me to say as a welshman ! its only 70 years ago wales, scotland and england were dying by eachother on battlefields all over. we are united however hard it is for some arrogant nationalists to agree with.
truly, as a people who come from so many races, nations and cultures, the fact that us scots ever became a country is a miracle. much moreso is the kinship that unites us. and as a scotsman I have to say I love the english. Why? for without the common hatred of the english, we would never have become a nation. so we must not only love thuy neighbor, but also love thy enemy for causing us to become a nation and not remain many groups of warrong peoples. cunts tho they may be we need the english.
this is my song, I truly feel like I am the flower of Scotland. Been many times and my mom was born and raised in innerleithen and all her family there in the border country. The heather is in my heart forever.
I am Irish, and I live in Ireland. Last month, my daughter started her University Degree Course in Napier University, Edinburgh. I work in the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry, since the 1970s. I have lived in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. "Flower of Scotland" is a Powerful Scot Song

@cdke4 Im Irish, but with the way the EU is - its better to be under englands breast. England currently is one of the few nations standing up to the EU and Brussels who have the potential to ruin everything you love about your country. Be it the economy, your neutrality, your identity. The British empire is gone. Its the French-German EU you should be wary of now. Englands probably our best ally now in the world, and theres between 10-15 million of us in the UK, no point hating them now.
Independence is a great ideal. Affording an economy is another thing. Though not Irish, Scots or Gaelic at all, I love the culture, the music and your yearning to be free. I know ore about Gaelic history and struggles than just about all of my Anglo-Irish/Scottish friends ( all they know is the alcohol, and not good single malt at that)
yet some just want to bitch and gipe because it's in keeping with the thread they're posting in (a pro-scots atheme thread) - and to be honest i respect my northern neighbours, they're damned fine people, but then so are most humans on an individual basis (with a few exceptions, mainly those as stereotype others - which is what i was railing against)! but you want to feel superior to me, fine - go ahead; pick on my linguistic skills, historical knowledge and anything else you want but -
and if you read my comment, it was aimed at some non-brit as stereotyped us as "buck-toothed, tea swilling pussies" when we have some damned tough millitary regiments... so (as you put it) please for the love of {deity} learn to accept that some people want to argue against bias (as i am, since americans & most pro-USA people see brits as above stereotype, when we aren't),
@mightyteegar Willian the Conquerer, Duek of Normandy (France) who became the King of England by killing Englishmen and taking a throne he had scant claim to by law and blood - did he and the Normans play nice here?! NO, look up a phrase called 'The Harring of the North' - they commited mass-genocide!!! Then lead us to reclaim their hereditairy lands in France, did most people in the English pesseantry want that, NO! did our nobles (the Normans), yes! (Cont)

@mightyteegar ok, so sorry to have to use net-speak - but ever heard of a character limit, no?! well, try saying that much 140 letters ... secondly, does the year 1066 mean anything to you? well, i come from hastings (in sussex) ... the french invaded there in that year and took the ENLGISH throne (univited) and the english invaded france barely 100 years later to take back lands that belonged to the desendents of the french duke william (known as the conquerer) ... (cont )
As an American of Irish decent (who enjoys Highland Games a little more than he should) I must say that even I get a tear in my eye when I listen to this song. Gaels should always stand together!
@trevasinclair123 u scots are doomed after u follow your socialistic path to self implosions! Good luck with ur own army and air force and navy and immigration and customs and currency and embassys etc.
@Tarantio1983 we needed scots, taffs & paddies to bulster ourarmies, but you needed us to pay your way 'cus we had the major traiding ports to europe and if you wanna walk from british trade centres (london, dover and livwerpool + every english city and port) - then feel free, but remember that the SNP pays for your free schools and health care with money that comes mainly from the english tax system ( most of which is gained in coporrate tax from the city of london) !
I want Scotland to be independent, I'm only half Scottish, the other half is English (with a bit of Irish thrown in) but I love Scotland as much as William Wallace him self, and I would love for Scotland to be independent, what England did to Scotland, Wales and Ireland was unjustified, and I would not be surprised if sed nations never forgive England, and I would not blame them.
Scotland has such a rich history that places like America lack. Our ancestors were not quick to give up, right stubborn they were. Scotland is its own country, ask any Scot if they are British and they'll be quick to reply, "No, I'm Scottish and proud of it." Our national identity is important since most of us can trace our roots back centuries and have our own Clan tartan. Although I find the entire English and Scotland animosity outdated in this day and age.
I am Scottish, of Scottish parents. Was born in the highlands but raised in England from the age of 4. You can take the boy out of Scotland, but you cannot take Scotland out of the boy.
can I point out that Scotland has no nation anthem its just this is the most popular song to become Scotlands national anthem. We England wrongly said no not allowing u to have this fantasit song as ur national anthem (well i say 'we' i mean our fucking british parliment)
So proud to be a Scot, independence is the only route to a better future, thanx for putting this on, watched it in Greece and showed friends here, they cant believe there would be any referendum result other than a resounding YES!!!
shut the fuck up. im half scottish half english. why can't we all get on? oh and p.s. i did stand up for scotland when i was at school in england, and i would've done the same if i went to school in scotland about the english too.
im from the highlands an it is a beutiful place scotland is famed for its mountains and glens it should also be famed for tv(John Logie Beard) the telephone(Alexander Graham Bell) and most of all golf i never hear on tv any thing about scotland inventing
the game just about how tiger woods is the bes and thats a load of rubish
Although Im English, I am not proud of what happened all those centurys ago but what is done is done. but you can change your future. I so wish i was Scottish!
But I want to now why are scotish people are singing on english, why dont you sing in scotish, and I want to now why are you toking english and not scotish????
I'm scottish and seven generations before me too. I was never there but i feel my scottish blood everytime. I'm really proud to be a part of it! As i met my father the first time 3 years ago, (i was 27 years old) and he told me, that he is scottish, so I want go to this wonderful country with him to visit our family there. This is my plan. Today I heared this song the first time and learned it to play on my guitar. WE CAN STILL RISE NOW, AND BE THE NATION AGAIN!!!
schottland und irland sind länder in denen man magie lebt, ich wünschte ich wäre schotte oder ire...leider bin ich nur deutscher ;-) aber trozdfem WUNDERVOLLES LIED!!!
My father is Scottish, shame I was born overseas. This is a very moving Anthem, and the history behind it speaks for generations. I have learned more about Scottish history in the last two years than in my whole 48 years. And now I an blessed enough to marry a Scottish lass. SCOTLAND 4EVER!
My God, I never heard this song before, it is just beautiful and haunting. If Americans of Italian Ancestry had a vote for a National Anthem of Scotland, this would certainly get my vote.

(cont )

Let's show the real support for Scottish Independence here. THUMBS UP if you want SCOTLAND to become an INDEPENDENT country !
glasgow1234 5 months ago 67
@glasgow1234

Scotland's last "unofficial" anthem was "Scotland the Brave" which was a bit rubbish.
The people chose this song - that's as official as you can get.
