In addition to composting kitchen wastes, EM and different strains of microorganisms are being used worldwide in tests to clean up toxic sites, such as those that have been contaminated by petroleum and chemical spills. In all cases I have read about so far, the EM microbes succeeded in cleaning up the toxins FAR faster than other more commonly used methods, with no harm and many benefits to the environment in the process.
This is basically the same as bokashi, using the same microorganisms, and it is a proven technology that does indeed work. Used for planting trees and shrubs, they do fabulously well, and produce sooner than those planted without it. In addition, if you add a step and put the resulting pickled wastes into an earthworm bed, the earthworms go nuts (in a good way), as do the plants on which the resulting compost is ultimately used.
It did seem that all the people I talked to had a sort of "cult-like" mentality. They were fiercely opposed to anyone that questioned the product. Their dismissal of this criticism always seemed to call into question science by saying "there are some things that science just doesn't understand, but I do". I don't know if the people I worked with were affiliated with this cult, but they would probably be eager to sign up.
"We conclude from our results that ‘Effective microorganisms’ did not improve yields and soil quality during 4 years of application in this field experiment under the temperate climatic conditions of Central Europe."

If EM (Bacteria) can make a compost in 2-3 weeks (4-5 times faster than that of natural one) as shown in the workshop, the same will continue working on the soil/earth ?
This is DANGEROUS for natural seeding & germination process of our ecology, as wind and birds/animals spreads many natural seeds for vegetations during the summer and the most those grows(germinate) on the first monsoon itself.
Means ,EM will KILL lots the seeds as it will be degrading them faster before germinate.
EM aids the germination of seeds. EM is a combination of bacteria that affects the environment in a positive manner. You should read Dr. Terou Higa's books ( Earth Saving revolution 1 And 2) and try using EM to appreciate how this discovery is considered a "PANACEA" (cure all)
"harmful to none, beneficial to all"- Dr. Terou Higa
As a Tzu Chi voluntee, Our teacher Master Cheng Yen encourage us to recycle to protect and save our earth because it Earth is our home. With the help of the Mokichi Okada Foundation of American, more Tzu chi voluntee can learn to recycle kitchen waste even if they live in apartments.
I worked in Cuba where this product is being used in a large-scale programme for organic agriculture. The results are amazing... no more sick pigs nor fungi disease on tomatoes, bananas, etc. The real scam of EM is that you do not need to pay for expensive bottles, you can brew it on yourself ! Just use some soil from the healthiest forest nearby and you will get a product fully adapted to your environment
In malaysia, anaerobic bacteria are widely used in treating waste water in oil palm mill. we can produce bokashi to produce more EM at a very low cost.
To everyone that claims that EM "works", for any purpose: Please pick a measurable value, that will indicate whether EM is performing as expected. Measure that value, while using EM, but also, in a separate but identical test, while not using EM. Repeat this process enough times to be statistically significant. Eliminate all other variables. I don't think this has ever been done with EM. That's how science works. That's how we discover new drugs, or go to the moon, or make your car go faster.
@ScottHorn9 Why don't YOU go search in Google Scholar. There is plenty of research in peer-reviewed journals like the Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology or Bioresource Technology.
There's a lot of test now done with EM. (efficacy test, etc)
it takes time to conclude the final "statistic" result.
but it has been tested to increase yield in crops, eliminate foul odors, combat harmful bacteria and virus such as (E. coli, staphylococcus aureus, and even SARS) try to read Dr T. Higa's books
you dont always need "Statistics", "RESULT" was more important to me.
I worked for a company that sold these products. I never saw it applied to a garden, just wastewater applications. It did nothing at all. If you want to show me some peer reviewed articles on its use in agriculture I'd be happy to evaluate them. There is no real data to back the claims made by the "EM" purveyors. They prey on gullible people who don't understand the basic concepts of microbiology. These microbes are already present everywhere. You're paying for a contaminated yeast culture.
If you stop reading articles and start using it for agricultural needs you may be able to stop writing all the nonsense about EM. Do not read books, watch videos or read articles. Just start planting some seeds and work with the soil. EM was not meant to be a wastewater solution. It was developed for agriculture. I know it is used for other things nowadays, we still need more practise on that, but in agriculture it is widely known that it works. By the way I am an organic farmer.
@ScottHorn9 Hi Scott, in our universe, there is a lot of things that we yet to know but it works. you are a microbiologist, it is your task to make people know and understand, or it is a challange for your career to understand the process. just look at how japanese are advence in organic farming. just do more research on how on earth these EM (extraordinary magic) assist decomposition of waste inside your drains.
@ahtar73 I agree science is an ongoing search for answers, but the microbiology involved here is well understood. I've researched this topic extensively, and there are plenty of resources available to you and anyone else that wants to learn about this topic, use google's "scholar" link to find credible articles about EM. EM is a scam. Purveyors of this product will claim that it can do practically anything, but cannot back it up with documented results. Please don't waste any more money on EM!
@ScottHorn9 guess you have never used EM. If you would have, you would never say this. It eliminates odors, digests sludge, enhances soil, and does everything it claims in this video. So, before you go telling people not to wast money on EM you should try it for yourself. Then, you would see the effects of EM for yourself and be convinced without having some stupid documents to back up the technology. So, don't knock it till you try it!
I venture to guess you were not taught how to properly use the product nor have you looked on the internet for peer reviewed research. There are today roughly 60 peer reviewed articles on various elements of the EM Technology. Most are on agriculture and the others on EMX for health.
Incorrect. I consulted with our supplier, as well as a few independent (but pro-EM) consultants on the matter. All the above demonstrated no knowledge of microbiology and were unable to provide any information about how the culture they sold was actually supposed to work. My own research showed that the claims made by the manufacturer we scientifically impossible (that this culture could oxidize sulfides to either sulfate or elemental sulfur without an electron donor present).
Did you check Bergey’s Manual, 8th ed.? I found a paper from 1984 that states this is possible and cites Bergey's as the source for the information: "In this latter edition the ability of the species to use sulfide as the sole photosynthetic electron donor and to form elemental sulfur as an intermediate oxidation product, inside or outside cells..." The paper was written by JOHANNES F. IMHOFF INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SYSTEMATIC BACTERIOLOGY, July 1984, p. 338-339.
This product and the claims made about it fall squarely into the realm of pseudoscience. EM salesmen will claim it can work miracles, but cannot explain how it works without invoking arm-wavy mysticism. The photosynthetic bacteria that this stuff allegedly contains cannot survive at the low pH of the final mixture. It's basically very expensive sour beer.
answer to janariate: yes! There are results of BOD reductions of 90%. I'm working 3 years with EM in household and garden with succes. Its makes our lives simpler. With one product you do a lot and its help the environment directly.
our indoor zoo frm malaysia have trying many thing to cover up a smelly odor but it cant work, now we are using this em (effective microorganisms) is a good thing to cover up all the smelly odor....it improve health, digestive system and minimize disease.

You cannot make EM1 from mountain soil. There is a certain balance of microbes in the formulation that you cannot reproduce from a wild fermentation.
