  • great song, and great album too, Southern accents. supposed to be a double album, acoustic and electric, but they were very slow recordings, and the project just failed

  • "i can still feel the eyes, of those blue-bellied devils!"

    Excellent lyrics!

  • hey hey hey i was born a rebel down in dixie hey hey hey sing it tom

  • Hey Hey! I was Barney Rubble!

  • freakin love Tom Petty!! every song he's done is more than amazing!! :D

  • I first heard this on King of the Hill the episode where Kahn became a redneck i knew it was by Tom Petty :p

  • @scorpio4113 tom petty also plays the voice of Lucky on King of the Hill...he's Luanne's boyfriend haha

  • haha knew that too i know too much for King of the Hill... >.>

  • The KOTH version was done by the Drive By Truckers and is on their latest outtake CD. I actually like the DBT version better than Petty's original, which sounds too much like a Southern Springsteen to me.

  • PLEASE GO ON TOUR AGAIN!!!

  • After you're done hanging with Tom, fire up a fatty, and check out the "Shake For Me Now" video in my site.

  • I have no problem with anyone from anywhere in the country and have traveled coast to coast. This song describes the south and the south only. The same with"southern accents" on the same album. " Ihave my own way of prayin". You have to live it to understand, faith, family, fun, football....its what we live for.

  • wow! what a performance ! nice song.

  • Hey, its OK to be a Rebel. Cherish your faith and your heritage. Be proud of who you are. Its OK to white and be proud of it!

  • LOVE THIS song!!

Don't care about the flag or shit!! It is a great song. But I'm Canadian so wtf do I know LOL

  • I keep coming back

  • i 2nd that...and this coming from a latino lol in all honesty, tom petty displays nothing but intergrity and pride...geart song writer, artis, etc.

  • as a black man, i personally have no problem with someone displaying that flag as long as it isn't the backdrop for ignorant, racist comments which it isn't in this song so to me it's all good

  • You a smart man, that flag is not about hate but pride, everybody has differnt symbols of theres, have good one hoss.

  • Great Song! Does anybody know who does the version of this song on one of the King of the Hill episodes?

  • The Drive By Truckers do the King of the Hill version and it is on the new album of b-sides they just put out.

  • It is unfortunate that the rebel flag is synonymous with racism, but I don't think that TPs intent was anything but driving home the point of this song and tour. Also remember that this was in the mid 1980s...Im sure he would NEVER do this today. Anyone listening to these lyrics will get the point. BTW, great song!! One of his best, he still plays it once in a while.

  • This is one fucking great tune!!

  • I think TP would do this song today. "even before my fathers father they called us all rebels, as they burned our corn fields and left our cities leaved. I can still feel the eyes of those blue bellied devils, as I walk around tonight though the concrete and metal." You have to be a Southern to understand that. You can't be a true southerner without understanding what went on 1861 to 1865.

  • Sooo hard to kick it HEY HEY HEY!

  • Some real igorant comments on here!

  • No it was your father who did...

Jokes aside, if you are watching this clip, there are Christians, black and white and at least one Jew. Tom Petty is a true gentleman and one very fine musician. This song is an old favorite of mine. My utmost love and respect.

  • .......great video. That sure is a beautiful flag. Jreb

  • Even tho I grew up on alot of Tom's music, I didn't listen to the whole Southern Accents cd until high school in '98...now I think this is one of the best songs he ever did.

BTW, does anyone think this could've had an awesome concept video? I guess he already made ones for "Dont Come Around Here" and "Make it Better" they figured they'd just do concert footage.

  • that african american backup singer is a true sign of his white supremist ways. Where the hell did u get that? In 30 years, i never equated Tom Petty with white supremacy.

  • you absolute bellend!!!

  • His drummer since 1994, Steve Ferrone, is black, and Tom Petty has for some 25 years stuck up for the native Americans. He is NOT a white supremacist.

Also, singers don't necessarily sing from their own perspective. Bruce Springsteen himself wasn't sent off to "kill the yellow man" - he was turned down by the military. But he can still write the lyrics to Born in the USA from someone else's perspective.

  • Tom petty and the heartbreakers are THE REAL rock band.

  • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are a REAL rock n' roll band.

  • if he said he was born in COMPTON then no problem?...besides my spelling!!!

  • Awesome song

  • SO proud to be a rebel.

  • Tom Petty Best Song Writer Of All time Bar None! A True Genuis

  • been there done that i was the best concert i ever seen!

  • Tom petty is the man!!!!

  • A rebel without a clue.

  • dude, fuck you too

  • More of a clue than you!

  • tom is a southerner

  • the song is called rebels, the confederates were rebels. thats why the flag is in there. get over it, hes not racist or anything you people say.

  • yeah his current drummer is black there BFFs !!! duh!

  • Times change - that flag to most people just represents the south and they're proud to be from it. Everyone sees it differently i guess. I love that flag personally, it's cool looking and rebellous. I guarantee you that black people use the N word more than anyone but yet find this old flag offensive? All of our ancestors were assholes at one time if you go back far enough in history....we're not them. Your not a slave and i'm not the slave master....get over it..let it go.

  • Short story long...this song is awesome...As is the video, from the unscripted flag moment to the girl running on stage.

Tom Petty is the man... Haters go away

  • I think it's evidence that people didn't start really giving two shits about the flag until the 90's, when people stopped worrying about real shit--That Petty could get away w/ having a GINORMOUS CONFEDERATE FLAG BACKDROP. It's not the flag that I think is cool, it's the fact that he could actually get away w/ it.

  • As you said there wasn't an uproar until the 90's, and this was around 85 I think, so no one cared. I saw Tom and the Heartbreakers around the time of Full Moon Fever (great tour with Lenny Kravitz) and he made some speech about not liking what the flag stood for anymore, but still played Rebels.

  • Some of you are so absurd. Tom Petty is not a freaking racist. Look, I could care less about the confederate flag. I only care about the American flag. But I do appreciate the fact that there was a time, when I was about 5 years old, that everything wasn't so damn politically correct.

  • my boyfriend and i like tom petty.

  • Hey, fudpucker Go Puck yourself. The shit hole is New England! All you bleeding heart librals eat dog shit.

  • you are fucking awesome

  • oh by the way, fuck off you fucking piece of shit, just go fuck yourself until you bleed

  • he was born a rebel, just like me he was born in the great state of Florida 3rd state to succeed from the shit hole we call united states of america.

i agree Drdalehindrickson, all the of people who think its racist need serious attitude adjustment and need to pick up a fucking history book- a real history book

nothing pisses me off more then ignorance.

  • I wish this was one concert that I could have ever gone to. Everytime I had a chance! Something happened that kept me from going and that just pissed me off!

  • Best concert I've ever been to: Tom Petty playing at Kingswood north of Toronto. Full Moon Fever tour. Even dedicated "Even the Losers" to his opening act!

  • My favorite song and my favorite flag. Many Great Americans died for that flag! I'm sick of the filthy savages that bad mouth my flag. Lincoln, gave you savages a free passage back to your homeland. You'd be eatting flies right now if it were not for the Rebel Flag! Love or get the hell out of my Country!

  • Anyone who thinks the Confederate flag is "racist" needs another lesson in American history. But its OK to shove all that Mexican & Africa &$%&%&^$% down uor throats.

  • This man is truly a one of a kind artist and I am a lifelong fan...nobody can touch this band...simply legendary.

  • My favorite idiom in the TP catalogue: Rebeillion. I know his other tunes flirted, flitted, fixated, --- ran out of 'f' similes, oopsie-- BUT, this ONE tune abs NAILS the coffin door shut tight. He SHINES during this performance -- it's palpable even on YouTube. Phrasing is great in the lyrics, too -- lil secret: That's what MAKES a good song become GREAT.

  • One of the last rock stars to ever matter -- God bless Tom Petty, The Heartbreakers, and their rare brand of rock and roll -- the kind which dares to go to the place where lives are changed and souls are touched. It's so much to expect from music, and yet sometimes....it happens.

Can you tell that I love The Heartbreakers?

(Mike Campbell, the most under-rated guitar player in the history of rock music :-)

  • nice post i agre with every thing you said tom petty and the heart breakers are the best band in history

  • My favorite TP song, just because im a Fla. cracker.

  • name one artist today with this kind of personality

  • Exactly!

  • Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers!!! The best!!! Thanks from Spain!!! Go Dixieland!!

  • G

    OOD times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this song and flag goes out to all of the dumb ass n

  • Great tune !!

But banned by facebook !! LOL

    They don't like the flag???

    LMAO

  • Just like Tom in true Proud Southern form. I say to facebook & anyone else with their last brain cell on life support due to their force fed scapegoat mentality or are trying to place nice as not to be ridiculed or Oh My Heaven forbid, not diversified, or sensitive enough!

Let's not forget the ones so thin skinned these days we had better not breathe near them or suffer some outrageous media spin that turns us all into Mini Jim Crows.

I say, "We don't give a damn rather you like it or not!"

  • no one cares

  • sounds like the class of '79 to me. rebels!

  • man i gotta go to a tom petty concert, they sound so amazing!!!

  • i'm just a kid and god do i love me some tom petty

  • May God Bless The Rebels.

  • Hysteriabelle70

Thank you! I second that !

It's a shame, so many people have the misconceptions they do about Southern Rebels.

If we thought we could get away with it, we'd take the idiots who use us to seek attention or start problems with no signs of gray matter between their ears, out behind the "wood shed" & "Have a word of prayer" with them, so to speak ;o}>~

My soft spoken, gracious,"Well, I do declare!" Mother raised me to be a Lady. But, the "rebel" still remains:o)

  • No Thanks needed I was just Born A Rebel. You have been Kissed by a Belle.

  • wow tom petty is awsome lol this is real music right here man.

  • Is Tom Petty a Democrat?

  • yep

  • There is no one else like Tom. A true American legend, with the "Heart" of 10, and the vision/motivation to fill his American Dream!

  • good comment, i agree100%, and i also love the work he did with Johnny cash

  • "it's so hard to kick it!"

  • Benmont played an important role too.

  • true so did stan and ron, even howie, but mike gave tom the sound that is tom petty and the heartreakera

  • lol...Tom gave Tom the sound that is Tom Petty.

  • mike played a important roll in making it though

  • Thank you. My dad is the heartbreakers

  • which heartbreaker are you the son of

  • Daughter of M.C. Howie is the whole reason the heartbreakers had anything to do with Johnny Cash.

  • really?

  • no ur not

  • i dont think so...

  • honestly

they wouldnt be like this if it wasnt for benmont

its not about who gave who the sound its about who got the boys together

    that was ben

  • i guess your write, but you have to admit, mike is awesome

  • i never said he wasnt

but ben and tom are my favorite and then mike then ron then stan

  • mike is my fave

  • he is a pretty ba guitar player

mike is tom's best friend though

but its not that i dont like mike at all

    i like him a lot

but he just isnt my fav

  • mike is really good

  • he is an excellent guitar player

i mean the stuff he plays is really hard

and he does it with ease

    the man does have skills

  • Here comes my man...

  • Bands these days try to impress the listeners (and viewers) through speed riffs and glam. Tom, well, a few chords in the right spot and a great deal of feeling brings chills to the spine.

  • God He Is Such A BAD ASS.

  • this song just gets me every time! Such a solid song all the way through and just leads up to a climactic high powered finish. Man music is not what it used to be!

  • this ain't no joke.

  • my generation dont listen to music like this no more, i must be old fashioned cuz i love it lol

  • Yea Tom Petty does not make apologies about his background ,one foot in the grave ,one foot on the pedal, I WAS BORN A REBEL,and none one can change that because I know what he means

  • 5:31. I think Stan thought that Tom was really going to whip the flag at his face.

  • Great song...... Probably my fav. live perfomance song from him.

  • I can still feel the eyes of those blue belled devils, while Iam walking around tonight through the concret and meatal.

  • i dont understand what you mean man ?

  • troudecul69

It is a civil war term.

    The yankees wore blue.

  • Hell yes! I wish stuff like this or something like King's Highway got more recognition.

Southern Accents was a pretty solid album. The only song most people know though is Don't Come Around Here No More.

  • Great song!!! You will never hear it on the radio!!!

  • your right it is a great song, You need to move to Chicago, because I hear it a lot on Chicago radio.

  • there is rebel in us all its not north or soth east or west its all about not being pushed around

  • right on!!

  • mike cambell is so fucking underrated

  • i know, when you play like that, YOU NEED TO BE RECOGNIZED BY THE FUCKING WORLD

  • Who are telling !!!! He plays the most amazing leads. Very melodic within structure of the song, but its so, so, expressive. He really covers a lot of ground given the song's key.

  • long live petty!

  • his hair is amazing :)

  • Im up here in the Detroit Area and We Love it when he comes to the Palace! and DTE , Ive been to all his concerts, and go fishing with his tunes! Tom Rocks The absolute best ! Thanks for the REAL music!

  • man I love Tom. I'm 24 and I've lost count how many times I've seen him in concert!

  • this is the version on the pack up the plantation CD

  • I love this song. Favorite song ever. I want to know who is hugging Tom after the performance & why,

  • Its Jeff Stein and fuck knows why

  • absolutely fucking awesome man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jeez that was good.

  • blue-bellied devils

  • Its worth noting that this is the song that Tom Petty was so frustrated that he couldn't get how he wanted it that he broke his hand against a wall in a fit of rage. I think its safe to say that he finally got it right and it really comes alive and together at this performance. What a fucking masterpiece.

  • dude my hair looks kinda like tom pettys

  • I have seen that Actor from The Warriors in so many Movies, I think I have a couple Movies with him in it lol.

  • Rebellion, solitude, acceptance ... this song has it all. It is far larger than the sum of its parts, and though it comes as no particular surprise that it may be one of his best songs to hear live, it also is one of my favorites of all-time. Thank you for posting.

  • There Drummer looks like that guy from the Warriors, that guy who says Warriors come out to play yay.

  • Haha, he totally does.

  • this is the version on the pack up the plantation CD

  • This is the real stuff

  • tom petty is the best musician EVAR!!! and the fact that he is a sexy beast is a plus too! >xD

  • The South is gona rise again!

  • Stow that militaristic redneck crap...the South has "risen" just fine where it is. No better place to live than the South.

  • Living in the North aint all that bad either! lol I live next to Taylor Tucky...lol Us Redneck Northern boys keep the South alive up here. We dont let anyone talk crap about the South.

  • What a great fucking singer/songwriter and great band. I don't see how anyone could not like Tom Petty.

  • best american singer/songwriter EVER!!!

  • "I can still feel the eyes of those blue bellied devils"

One of the greatest musical phrases ever.

  • Drive by Truckers did the version heard on king of the hill. They play it live sometimes.

Petty is great as Lucky on King of the Hill.

  • Now I have thought Lucky looked and sounded like Tom Petty. Now are you telling us Lucky IS Petty?

  • his hair is amazing...:p
