great song, and great album too, Southern accents. supposed to be a double album, acoustic and electric, but they were very slow recordings, and the project just failed
The KOTH version was done by the Drive By Truckers and is on their latest outtake CD. I actually like the DBT version better than Petty's original, which sounds too much like a Southern Springsteen to me.
I have no problem with anyone from anywhere in the country and have traveled coast to coast. This song describes the south and the south only. The same with"southern accents" on the same album. " Ihave my own way of prayin". You have to live it to understand, faith, family, fun, football....its what we live for.
as a black man, i personally have no problem with someone displaying that flag as long as it isn't the backdrop for ignorant, racist comments which it isn't in this song so to me it's all good
It is unfortunate that the rebel flag is synonymous with racism, but I don't think that TPs intent was anything but driving home the point of this song and tour. Also remember that this was in the mid 1980s...Im sure he would NEVER do this today. Anyone listening to these lyrics will get the point. BTW, great song!! One of his best, he still plays it once in a while.
I think TP would do this song today. "even before my fathers father they called us all rebels, as they burned our corn fields and left our cities leaved. I can still feel the eyes of those blue bellied devils, as I walk around tonight though the concrete and metal." You have to be a Southern to understand that. You can't be a true southerner without understanding what went on 1861 to 1865.
Jokes aside, if you are watching this clip, there are Christians, black and white and at least one Jew. Tom Petty is a true gentleman and one very fine musician. This song is an old favorite of mine. My utmost love and respect.
Even tho I grew up on alot of Tom's music, I didn't listen to the whole Southern Accents cd until high school in '98...now I think this is one of the best songs he ever did.
BTW, does anyone think this could've had an awesome concept video? I guess he already made ones for "Dont Come Around Here" and "Make it Better" they figured they'd just do concert footage.
that african american backup singer is a true sign of his white supremist ways. Where the hell did u get that? In 30 years, i never equated Tom Petty with white supremacy.
His drummer since 1994, Steve Ferrone, is black, and Tom Petty has for some 25 years stuck up for the native Americans. He is NOT a white supremacist.
Also, singers don't necessarily sing from their own perspective. Bruce Springsteen himself wasn't sent off to "kill the yellow man" - he was turned down by the military. But he can still write the lyrics to Born in the USA from someone else's perspective.
Times change - that flag to most people just represents the south and they're proud to be from it. Everyone sees it differently i guess. I love that flag personally, it's cool looking and rebellous. I guarantee you that black people use the N word more than anyone but yet find this old flag offensive? All of our ancestors were assholes at one time if you go back far enough in history....we're not them. Your not a slave and i'm not the slave master....get over it..let it go.
I think it's evidence that people didn't start really giving two shits about the flag until the 90's, when people stopped worrying about real shit--That Petty could get away w/ having a GINORMOUS CONFEDERATE FLAG BACKDROP. It's not the flag that I think is cool, it's the fact that he could actually get away w/ it.
As you said there wasn't an uproar until the 90's, and this was around 85 I think, so no one cared. I saw Tom and the Heartbreakers around the time of Full Moon Fever (great tour with Lenny Kravitz) and he made some speech about not liking what the flag stood for anymore, but still played Rebels.
Some of you are so absurd. Tom Petty is not a freaking racist. Look, I could care less about the confederate flag. I only care about the American flag. But I do appreciate the fact that there was a time, when I was about 5 years old, that everything wasn't so damn politically correct.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
alright dude its a great song and all but by far not his best and if you think america is a shit hole go fuck yourself or your cuzin cuz the souths the shit hole u dumb fuck move to cuba or sumthin or go to africa and fuck a monkey and get aids u arnt a realy american rember who won the civil war
he was born a rebel, just like me he was born in the great state of Florida 3rd state to succeed from the shit hole we call united states of america.
i agree Drdalehindrickson, all the of people who think its racist need serious attitude adjustment and need to pick up a fucking history book- a real history book
I wish this was one concert that I could have ever gone to. Everytime I had a chance! Something happened that kept me from going and that just pissed me off!
Best concert I've ever been to: Tom Petty playing at Kingswood north of Toronto. Full Moon Fever tour. Even dedicated "Even the Losers" to his opening act!
My favorite song and my favorite flag. Many Great Americans died for that flag! I'm sick of the filthy savages that bad mouth my flag. Lincoln, gave you savages a free passage back to your homeland. You'd be eatting flies right now if it were not for the Rebel Flag! Love or get the hell out of my Country!
Anyone who thinks the Confederate flag is "racist" needs another lesson in American history. But its OK to shove all that Mexican & Africa &$%&%&^$% down uor throats.
My favorite idiom in the TP catalogue: Rebeillion. I know his other tunes flirted, flitted, fixated, --- ran out of 'f' similes, oopsie-- BUT, this ONE tune abs NAILS the coffin door shut tight. He SHINES during this performance -- it's palpable even on YouTube. Phrasing is great in the lyrics, too -- lil secret: That's what MAKES a good song become GREAT.
One of the last rock stars to ever matter -- God bless Tom Petty, The Heartbreakers, and their rare brand of rock and roll -- the kind which dares to go to the place where lives are changed and souls are touched. It's so much to expect from music, and yet sometimes....it happens.
Can you tell that I love The Heartbreakers?
(Mike Campbell, the most under-rated guitar player in the history of rock music :-)
Just like Tom in true Proud Southern form. I say to facebook & anyone else with their last brain cell on life support due to their force fed scapegoat mentality or are trying to place nice as not to be ridiculed or Oh My Heaven forbid, not diversified, or sensitive enough!
Let's not forget the ones so thin skinned these days we had better not breathe near them or suffer some outrageous media spin that turns us all into Mini Jim Crows.
I say, "We don't give a damn rather you like it or not!"
It's a shame, so many people have the misconceptions they do about Southern Rebels.
If we thought we could get away with it, we'd take the idiots who use us to seek attention or start problems with no signs of gray matter between their ears, out behind the "wood shed" & "Have a word of prayer" with them, so to speak ;o}>~
My soft spoken, gracious,"Well, I do declare!" Mother raised me to be a Lady. But, the "rebel" still remains:o)
you know when someones sings great when they do it live, and tom sings perfect live, artist these days dont sound to good when there singing live cuz they usually have some audio help, Tom Petty is sooo great!
Bands these days try to impress the listeners (and viewers) through speed riffs and glam. Tom, well, a few chords in the right spot and a great deal of feeling brings chills to the spine.
this song just gets me every time! Such a solid song all the way through and just leads up to a climactic high powered finish. Man music is not what it used to be!
Yea Tom Petty does not make apologies about his background ,one foot in the grave ,one foot on the pedal, I WAS BORN A REBEL,and none one can change that because I know what he means
Who are telling !!!! He plays the most amazing leads. Very melodic within structure of the song, but its so, so, expressive. He really covers a lot of ground given the song's key.
Im up here in the Detroit Area and We Love it when he comes to the Palace! and DTE , Ive been to all his concerts, and go fishing with his tunes! Tom Rocks The absolute best ! Thanks for the REAL music!
Its worth noting that this is the song that Tom Petty was so frustrated that he couldn't get how he wanted it that he broke his hand against a wall in a fit of rage. I think its safe to say that he finally got it right and it really comes alive and together at this performance. What a fucking masterpiece.
Rebellion, solitude, acceptance ... this song has it all. It is far larger than the sum of its parts, and though it comes as no particular surprise that it may be one of his best songs to hear live, it also is one of my favorites of all-time. Thank you for posting.
Living in the North aint all that bad either! lol I live next to Taylor Tucky...lol Us Redneck Northern boys keep the South alive up here. We dont let anyone talk crap about the South.

Stow that militaristic redneck crap...the South has "risen" just fine where it is. No better place to live than the South.
