@twarren20 Which is why I'd like to see her win as much now more than ever. B/c time is moving on. The young guns on the WTA are really getting it together now (Azarenka, Kvitova). Dementieva and Henin gone, Sharapova is a shadow of herself, then soon the Williams sisters and Clijsters will bow out. End of a beautiful era in tennis, especially American (womens) tennis.

This match proves my theory. Serena's return of serve (ROS) is not that good for a player of her caliber. I love Serena and sometimes she really places the ROS well with speed. But she doesnt return well often enough. Except for aces, if Dementieva got her racket on the ball, she hit the ball away from Serena. But on Elena's serves, Serena keeps hitting up the middle or right back to Elena. If Serena drastically improves her ROS, she would be even more formidable which is scary

@ellenhg45 I'm glad you recognize that this is just theory. What you fail to realize is that there is a power/placement balance. While Elena's returns may be away from Serena, they aren't very hard to get to. Serena's ROS may be up the middle, but it is still very effective/one of the best because the server barely has time to finish their service motion before hitting another shot. If you notice, as soon as Elena lands, she has to hit the ball back again, and is therefore disoriented.

@watchdemvideos We'll have to disagree. I posted looking at the first 3 minutes of the video. Sometimes she doesnt seem to do enough maybe b/c Elena was quick and Serena here was not as fast as she was when younger. And Im not just talking this match for Serena. In 2011, Serena dominated at Stanford and Toronto. Not only did she serve well but she was returning very well, not just up the middle or angled but deep and powerful. And she moved very well and moved her opponents as much as possible.

Name one woman who has a more explosive and accurate placement of the return of serve...ever. Go back and look at her match at 2010 aussie vs azarenka...even this match. You must have just started watching Serena because you can't know too much about her to make such an amateurish statement.

She was in an era of crazy players like Serena, Venus, Davenport, Capriati, Clijsters, and Henin who were forces to be reckoned with. I miss Elena so much and I hate the way she went out...come back Elena

@nelle069214 No Dementieva deserves exactly what her results indicate she is a talented player that lacked the mental toughness to win a major. Champions earn this slams by winning not by getting tight and losing multiple big matches. Dementieva had so many chances to win a major but her crappy serve and weak mind held her back.

@JordanjamesX I think Dementieva's biggest problem was her serve. For so many years it was so weak and inconsistent that she could never use it as a weapon. In all other areas, her game was great, but the serve was definetely a liability. If it wasn't for that, she would have won multiple slams I think. She did win the Olympic gold after all.

@wesmartin91 Dementieva also had poor volleys and not even a very good overhead (typical of someone whoe struggles with the serve). Her only great weapon was her forehand and return of serve. Her backhand was good but nothing extraordinary. Even after she improved her serve she didnt win a slam. She was good but not good enough.
