Spinks didn't deserve a title shot, but he made the most of his chance against the aging, not-in-the-best-shape Ali. The youthful Spinks was far more effective than Shavers, pressing harder and getting through Ali's defences more. He had a good lead after R9 after which Ali came on. It all came down to R15: they both opened up, letting the other score like crazy but Spinks got the best of him. I score it 6-5-4 for Spinks, with Spinks winning 1,2,5,9,13 and 15, Ali 3,7,10,12,14 and the rest even.

Certainly Ali is much better than Spinks: he proved that in their 2nd fight (see my comments on that one). But Ali was not better on this night. Spinks edged him because Ali was not prepared, not taking this unheralded fighter seriously. Ali was starting to show signs of Parkinsons Disease at this time, so to fight as well as he did shows how great he was.

@cozmic24 Ali never got into great shape after his epic showdown in Manila against Frazier. He began to age and had trouble making weight. Add to that sometimes he didn't train as hard as he did in the past. The last time he looked trimmed and in very good shape was against Spinks in the rematch which he dominated from start to finish. Ali trained very hard for that fight, in fact the night he lost here he ran for miles until 3am telling himself..."Gotta get my title back".

Leon was at the Riverside Casino in riverside IA last night at the bar and everyone was wanting some pictures. I didnt know him but he was really nice talking to who ever came up to him and turns out he did some amazing things.

No offense to Leon Spinks I'm sure he was a fine fighter but Leon Spinks was never in the league of the Greatest Muhammad Ali & had no business beating Ali the 1st time.

If Ali had fought his the fight the 1st time he would of whipped Spinks the 1st time & there probably wouldn't of been a sequel.

To me it wasn't what can be called an "upset", Muhammad Ali was already past his prime at this stage so Leon was just lucky, had he met Ali a decade earlier this wouldn't have even gone the distance, Spinks would have been knocked out within five rounds, he never really beat Ali, just a shadow of what was once the fastest heavyweight of all time, his "glory moment" was false.

You gotta give it to him,,Leon had his 7mo. of glory. I think he still holds the record for shortest reign as HW champ. Ali should have quit after the "Thriller in Manila" He kept going to the well and it ran dry on him. He tried to knock him out but just couldn't deliver.

@gbrown4x4 Actually Ken Norton's was a lot shorter....He was awarded the WBC title on March 29 1978 and lost to Holmes June 9 1978...Don't know if that was the shortest but it was shorter than Leon's reign
