the band behind the group are doin most of the work (if any),, this is what you could say (half live)..Live mics, but the original bein piped in (to cover voice range)
Larry is back and stronger than ever. He played Viper Alley in Lincolnshire (just north of Chicago) and they rocked. Ihad a chance to chat with them after the show and they are all doing great and love touring again. Larry's voice is as strong and clear as always.
@airshotsphotoco Hi Moe. I was worried when I heard that he'd had a 'cardiac event' some weeks back. Glad he's ok and back to performing. Didn't see them in Lincolnshire, but caught them in the Happy Together Tour in August.
@airshotsphotoco You're right, Larry sounded great, as did Jim Yester and Russ. I was there that night and was blown away by how great they sounded and how nice they were in person. Classic 60's group... Loved it....
@airshotsphotoco I was at the same same show and Larry and the Association sounded great. Jim Yester and Russ were also terrific. After the show they all very friendly and personable. We will never see the likes of this group again.
I just bought their reunion album and wasn't aware Larry had a heart attack. Get well soon Larry and best wishes to your family. Jim Yester still can sing. I love this group.
They are as good today as they were in the 60's and sometimes better! Too bad Larry Ramos (in hat) now has had a heart attack and not doing well. All the best wishes to him, Jim Yester and all the group. 10/2011.
Jim, thank you for your gift to the world. You keep on singing brother. Your music is just the same from the time the Association came together until now. Today the music has no soul. I will always be a fan I just wish you would come to Oklahoma City for a concert.
I never understood the point of standing up through a concert when you just paid $30 or more for a comfortable seat. Plus, its inconsiderate as he$% when you know there are people shorter than you are, behind you that also paid that same cash for their seat, that now cant see anything but the back of your fat head.
@Nelvin78 As a frequent concert-goer, I totally agree. I'm short, so I never buy main floor for that reason! (Not to mention outrageous ticket prices!) However, since this was a made-for-tv/dvd concert, those people may have been told by the producers to stand and clap! Just a thought...
Amazing how 40 some years after, they still harmonize pretty darn good. Look forward to seeing them on August 29th at the MN state fair. Wish all the original members were all there though. LOVE this video though, thanks for sharing it.
@BhatMasterson It does sound like John Sebastian here, but the entire 60's program was narrated by McGuinn. He can be seen at the beginning of the 'Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze' vid I have posted.
@BhatMasterson no its the guy that was kicked out of 3 dog night chuck negron [ his autobiography 3 dog nightmare] sebastian lives in woodstock mcguinn lives on the west coast of florida
It amazes me that all some people want to do is be negative ! They want to bitch about Terry Kirkham being overweight, and Jim Yester wearing a mullet. Fuck, why can't you just listen to one of the best groups from the60's and enjoy it. You must have an over inflated opinion of youselves to think that others really give a rat's ass what you think !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes - i agree with you. these guys and others like them back in the day - actually performed and even sounded different from one band to another. If you watch (ugh!!!) these so called american idol/got talent shows, all I hear are people trying to sound like Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston (where IS she these days?) - screamers one and all - just trying to hit high notes, but for what? break glass? I just don't get it - they ALL sound the same. This tune demands breath control!!!!
i don't know the name of the fife player, but, holy cow, no offense .... but you have grown ....... i'm heavy too from my younger years .... but you took it to another realm .... lose weight or die early. i'm losing as i speak .... just a forewarning, even though i'm quite sure you know what you have to do!
@frizzlefrap That's Terry Kirkman, the founder of the group. He officially left the band in '84, but came back to join this 'reunion'. Yes, hope he's taking care of himself these days :\
@bze2nlz4 Terry was very slim in his younger days. Although not really "skinny" just healthy looking. He is quite large here, and I really hope he is taking care of himself too. I really REALLY like him. :)
That front line is legendary........ I'm loving this video.
Wish Ted (far left) was on the drums, but it's nice seeing every one of them out front for this special event. Man, the harmony is spot on and Jim's lead vocals sound as good as the original record. These guysare just missing the physical presence of Brian Cole. RIP. Still, just watching this formation of the 6 Man Band, his spirit is there, to be sure. THEY WERE ONE OF THE GREATEST 1960's BANDS to come out of the Los Angeles area.
PBS (or whomever did the recording/mix) really butchered the sound on this entire special... a number of the acts had studio recordings mixed in with their performances, and I don't know why. There may have been problems with the live recording, or someone may have had a mistaken notion of how to "improve" things afterwards... but I can assure that neither the Association, nor Eric Burdon, nor anyone else whose performance was thusly desecrated, plays to a tape onstage. These are real musicians
They even had the guitar amp mics on as you can hear Larry play a lick at the end of the verse. The vocal mics are open as well and additional parts are being sung by the group, but the signature harmonies are pre-records if not the original
@lancetop ..... sometimes a person thinks they never grow old and maybe he's always liked the look. he has a helluva voice and the association wouldn't be who they are without his voice addition.
Not live, pre-recorded. The vocals all sound double-tracked. They're singing live to a tape. Interesting editing to extend the song. No diss intended. This is one of my fav bands of all time, but some of the actual live performances I've heard lately are not good.
@ROCKSTARCRANE I used to have this posted on another channel, and someone really reamed me for saying the same thing, insisting it was totally live! I think is is safe to say that they ARE singing to a pre-recorded back track, it's pretty obvious.
@ROCKSTARCRANE go to 2:45 and wait till the camera focuses on the vocalist at 2:50, it sounds like you can hear him actually singing. It is a disappointment that they're not actually singing but you can't really blame them i guess.
the Association will appear in New York City for the first time in over 10 years on Friday July 23, 2010. The concert will be held at BB Kings in Times square NY NY.

Yea, its not the same as watching the original 60's version but I guess I have to realize they grow old as all of us and they still sound pretty good..Thanks for posting..
