I guess thats what it says in the text as well but hearing Zoe say "...Death is dearer to me than what i am now..." is what first made me realize that Medea isnt speaking of dying per se, which gives her more depth as a character and makes the sparknotes "theme" of responsibility and the failure of the charcters to accept it more agreeable. I can see why she won a Tony awayrd, not only for making me change my perspective of course, i mean she is great as Medea, the epitomization of her.
I was marginally involved in the first leg of this production and have looked for years for some streaming version -- to no avail.
It's still available for purchase through an academic supplier, priced accordingly, unfortunately. Here's a link to the distributor page for purchase.
I was there for most rehearsals and performances, and it impacts me to this day, every time I walk onstage.
Not letting me link. Check "Films for the Humanities and Sciences" and "Euripides" on Google
This is how I like my ancient Greek tragedies performed: Decent costumes, capable actors, fitting scenery and good music! I wish more of the ancient plays of the great theatre triad (Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides) would be thus adapted for the cinema or television! A complete works edition like the one the BBC made for the works of Shakespeare would be nice! But Greece is bankrupt at the moment and the classical culture lost and forgotten in Europe at the moment.
We read this play in my English class and I played Medea. It was sweet, we made Greek masks and wore togas and everything. After we read the first act, we watched part of this version and my teacher looked at me and said, "Are you paying attention? You should take some notes from her." XD
I have a very poor Beta tape of this from a PBS show in 1982 or 83. Poor as it is, I cherish it. Is there a VHS or DVD available, in good quality? Where did this video come from? joans666
that there is the late husband of the deceased actress Nancy Marchand, Paul Sparer. Almighty rest the both of them in peace; they were highly accomplished actors in their own right.
Worked on the first leg of this production; was blessed to attend nearly all rehearsals taking notes for the director, Ms. Caldwell's late husband Robert Whitehead. SHE WAS ASTONISHING -- never the same -- as a young actor, I learned SO MUCH. She is one of the greats of all time.
