  • I typed in Madea..the black lady.

  • Paul Sparer really is the quintessential Creon.

  • Símplemente genial

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • @serialced - Dear friend - nothing surpasses this tragedy, and no actors could have done it better!!!

  • I guess thats what it says in the text as well but hearing Zoe say "...Death is dearer to me than what i am now..." is what first made me realize that Medea isnt speaking of dying per se, which gives her more depth as a character and makes the sparknotes "theme" of responsibility and the failure of the charcters to accept it more agreeable. I can see why she won a Tony awayrd, not only for making me change my perspective of course, i mean she is great as Medea, the epitomization of her.

  • oh jesus this is intense

  • shes like... a weapon, intense lol

  • Saw this video in my college theatre class. LOVE THIS

  • great play! I wish we had the entire video here somewhere.

  • Guys i would like to watch the whole spectacle, Can somebody say an internet site where i could see it, pleeeeassse.??????

  • @varguk

I was marginally involved in the first leg of this production and have looked for years for some streaming version -- to no avail.

It's still available for purchase through an academic supplier, priced accordingly, unfortunately. Here's a link to the distributor page for purchase.

I was there for most rehearsals and performances, and it impacts me to this day, every time I walk onstage.

Not letting me link. Check "Films for the Humanities and Sciences" and "Euripides" on Google

  • @varguk if you get it pass it on please

  • God, I can't begin to imagine how hard you'd have to work to get into these characters... I mean it is a pretty intense play

  • HE DOES TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE!!!!!!!!

  • One word about Medea = CRAZY FIERCE BITCH!! WOOT WOOT!!

  • I remember seeing this ib 83, Zoe is simply fabulous, I see why she won the Tony.

  • THIS IS THE GREATEST PIECE OF DRAMA WRITTEN IN HUMAN HISTORY!

Nobody (and I mean NOBODY) can POSSIBLY outdo such DRAMA!

(not even I would - LOL)

  • @AugustusAurelianus1

    LOLO...not even you...?

    Thanx for sending...

Really sooo great...and she has my name...LOL

    I love dramas...WONDERFUL share!!

  • great acting

  • meden kurdish historyyy

  • yes for the lament at 7:20!!

  • What a shame this performance along with Judith Anderson's is not available on DVD. Thanks for uploading!

  • my schools doing this play, and im designing costumes...im so happy!!!

  • This is how I like my ancient Greek tragedies performed: Decent costumes, capable actors, fitting scenery and good music! I wish more of the ancient plays of the great theatre triad (Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides) would be thus adapted for the cinema or television! A complete works edition like the one the BBC made for the works of Shakespeare would be nice! But Greece is bankrupt at the moment and the classical culture lost and forgotten in Europe at the moment.

  • I love this play but I see Medea as a warrior soldier like XENA LOL!!!

  • "The need of every individual to find out the kind of person he or she really is and to strive to become that person"

please help me by discusing this quote in relationship with Medea.

  • haha i remember acting her at my schools play... i am noo where near as good as her lol

  • Stunning...I remember seeing this in high school...it's just as powerful all these years later...

  • pause at 8:59 she looks like a witch

  • Wow, this must be one of the few acts ever that manages to consistantly impress me! Great performances!

  • Medea-strong georgian woman.

  • Nice indeed. But could you please upload other extracts of this film as well?

  • She really ripped out all the stops.

  • We read this play in my English class and I played Medea. It was sweet, we made Greek masks and wore togas and everything. After we read the first act, we watched part of this version and my teacher looked at me and said, "Are you paying attention? You should take some notes from her." XD

  • Interesting to see Judith Anderson here, as she too played a wonderful Medea in her prime.

  • i'm playing medea in my school's play...this is a WONDERFUL reference for me. thanks!

  • @keekee555 hi kee. :D hmmm.. when did you play this? :) please, let me know?.. we're about to perform this medea thing on saturday.. thanks.. :P

  • God, when she goes "yyyoouuu, pity mee..." (around 1:20) she's SCARY...

  • @hac2011 she freaks me out a little too.. lol

  • i love medea. strong women.

  • That performance was KILLLER! Thanks so much for uploading!

  • I love this play!!!

If I were a female I would kill this role!

  • what translation is this?

  • Robinson Jeffers - more accurately an adaptation rather than a translation

  • I saw this when I was 17, and was AWESTRUCK!! does anyone know where I can find the entire dvd? please!!!!!!!!

  • I did buy a DVD of this last year, from a company that makes educational DVD's. It was expensive, but worth every cent!

  • Zoe Caldwell is just mesmerizing! Quite a master class!

  • I have a very poor Beta tape of this from a PBS show in 1982 or 83. Poor as it is, I cherish it. Is there a VHS or DVD available, in good quality? Where did this video come from? joans666

  • that there is the late husband of the deceased actress Nancy Marchand, Paul Sparer. Almighty rest the both of them in peace; they were highly accomplished actors in their own right.

  • An amazing performance and such a dark tale.

  • Worked on the first leg of this production; was blessed to attend nearly all rehearsals taking notes for the director, Ms. Caldwell's late husband Robert Whitehead. SHE WAS ASTONISHING -- never the same -- as a young actor, I learned SO MUCH. She is one of the greats of all time.

  • Wow, how lucky for you.

  • My god, man! Do you realize some of us would happily have given a year of our lives for that experience?

  • I do -- I continue to feel very blessed!

  • Film's loss is theatre's gain. I've never seen Caldwell perform and this is a stunning clip of her work. Sorry i missed out :(

  • wouldn't work on film. too big. Too much. She needs the stage and the live audience.

  • Bravo, I saw her do this when I was in college man was she good! Bravo. Hell hath no fury... Eodepus rex

  • I love this play! This character is friggin awesome! I love her!

  • FEIRCE!!
