Oops.. sorry, I think I just made things even more confusing. the smaller horseshoe curve you refered to is "Serrano curve" the Big horseshoe curve is called "goldtree curve" I dont know the exact name of the spot you were filming other than the old tunnel that was tunnel #11 before it was abandonded
I watched UltimateHomers video Cuesta 2 again. you can clearly hear the engines lugging, working hard up into the first tunnel, you can see the summit inside tunnel#7 at 1:01 and hear the engineer cut the thottle and start coasting at 1:21. (its all down hill from this point) by 4:09 the engines change to a higher pitch sound as the driver starts to apply more dynamic braking from the engines(engine braking) and coasts and brakes the whole way into SLO.
Thats called the Serrano curve, its half-way down the west side! you were sitting on top of the old tunnel #11(abandoned) The summit is further north inside tunnel #7 thats the one closest to Santa Margarita and runs under the summit of the hwy 101. the eastside of the grade starts north of Santa Margarita.
No problem.. its all good. I liked your video very much and thanks for posting it. cheers

You are most certainly correct. I checked my UP grade chart. Thanks for your information!

Nice video! one correction though.. this is actually the westside of the grade, the train is running downhill into SLO at this point.
