Watched it when I was six years old. Scared the hell out of me. In retrospect I don't really understand why. These machines and their little helpers are rather incompetent. Fun to rewatch though.
I was also a child when I accidentally saw it on TV -- and I was not able to get rid of the fear for years. I wasn't sure as I walked to elementary school because I feared so much that such an ufo could come and do me harm. It's not suitable stuff for children at all. However I knew of some in elementary school that saw it and weren't in fear at all. Maybe i was more sensitive, or over-sensitive.
There were some other series in the 80s that had the same traumatizing effect.
yes do a google search , they have indeed made beanpole a women , they just have to ruin everything they remake , sack all these writers and take fan submissions lol

I can understand that! The atmosphere was very strong! When I saw the show, I was 7 years old, and I lived in a small village like Will and Henry, and sometimes, when I was in the open land, I looked behind me because I thought, a TRIPOD would appear, activating his "running light", like in the end of this clip here!

Ha! I read the books a few years back! This is awesome! Why the heck didn't they leave everything as is? Some nut always has a bright idea of changing the design. The Hilderbrant brothers' design was best. lol. Anticipating the movie. lol.
lol. You said Disney had obtained the rights to The Tripods. The way you spoke about the imbecile not having seized the opportunity to have a great series (like LOST or HEORES) implied that Disney was not up to par in movie making. I was simply pointing out their most recent successes. lol. It could be a really good movie...who knows, right?
First the series, the Tripods (SEE ABOVE) was a BBC production, when at the time there was this chairman who hated SCi-fi. he TRY TO DESTRYED dR wHO AND stoped THE tRIPODS making any mores series thats why there only 3 seasons. THis guy has now moved to ITV
Correction - there were two series, three books. A third series was always going to have been hard, as a key actress had died in a car accident prior to series 2, forcing changes. Doctor Who had been doomed by JNT and writers like Pip and Jane Baker, though the chairman certainly assisted. SciFi fans were also guilty of not being vocal enough. If even 10% had staged a protest, they could have rivalled CND at the time. The chairman was arrogant but not politically suicidal.
The movie versions of War of the Worlds were looked at by the BBC, but they'd cheated and used flying machines, not walking vehicles. The BBC, proud and insane as usual, decided that whatever Hollywood could do, they could do better. They did, too.
I think that's the only season ever released on DVD, the second season exists in various forms but I've never heard of an official release of it. It's my belief that the BBC has a lot of explaining to do over its treatment of science fiction over the years.
Wow genial gemacht!!!
and to think the original series stopped, what was it, one episode from the original trilogy ending before it was stopped and Dr Who was brought back.
it was my favorite show of it's kind, I think it still may be, the music and video aspect still give me the creeps
Yes, that fateful comment in the final episode "Has it all been for nothing?". Answer: YES! Because the BBC didn't film the final book of the trilogy. After all the money they spent on the first two series, surely it would have made more sense to finish the story properly with a third and final series. I bet Michael Grade had a hand in it, he axed Dr Who a few years after.
My understanding is that the BBC at the time hated and despised science fiction with a passion and that they looked for any and every excuse to eliminate it with extreme prejudice. You will be aware that the BBC performed two, not one, junking of old tapes and that telefantasy was disproportionately represented on both occasions. You will also be aware that The Omega Factor was never repeated or released on video - it only got put on DVD relatively recently and was badly restored.

woah, i loved this show. i saw it some years with my parents, my dad downloaded it, because he wanted to show it to us (me and bro's). it was great, but we didnt like the end...
today, some years later, its my birthday again. my parents presented me the books! there are 4 in all, in the first is written, how the tripods came to the earth the next 2 are same like in the TV (only as book... ya know^^) and the last one is what happens after the end of the tv.
I remember this show. I never found out how they ended it though... last thing I saw they were heading to Mont Blanc and had discovered a cache of weapons in a French subway station
John Shackley played the lead, but it was binned at the end of the first series due to budget cuts. The special effect were furnished by the graphics department at the meteorological office that supplied the BBC with the weather maps. After it was scrapped John Shackley says the last line in the show "So, it was all for nothing!" very poignant I thought.
I loved this show when I was a kid and I hope to see it again on TV some time. Better yet, if I ever come across the DVD's, those would be a must-buy.

The books had some nice touches missing from the series, but the series had some superb touches that were missing from the books, plus technology updates the books could never have included. Any attempt to revive should blend the two to get the most power out of the story. The movie had better be good, but after the debacles known as The Saint, The Avengers and Fox's tv-movie of Doctor Who, I don't expect it to be. Narnia's CGI was terrible and showed horribly limited minds on computer graphics.

woah, i loved this show. i saw it some years with my parents, my dad downloaded it, because he wanted to show it to us (me and bro's). it was great, but we didnt like the end...
today, some years later, its my birthday again. my parents presented me the books! there are 4 in all, in the first is written, how the tripods came to the earth the next 2 are same like in the TV (only as book... ya know^^) and the last one is what happens after the end of the tv.
woah great im reading now! =)

Excellent work, the SFX were pretty good for their time. Quite faithful to the books, too. (Sehr gut! Weilen danke!)
