Jim Henson was a great man who worked for, and started, SS from 1969 till 1990 when he passed away. He was the man who originally performed ernie and kermit. He also started the Muppet show around the 70's.
wth. why dont the writers put on any more kermit sketches? Sesame workshop still has the right to air them i think. These new ones suck anyway without frank oz. I guess the new generation of kids will grow up not knowing kermit the frog
I'm wondering why Elmo didn't give Kermit back his microphone when he asked him to. And besides Kermit would've forced it right out of his hand and reminding Elmo to ask before taking things that belong to other Muppets and people. Kermit knew that idea for a game wasn't very good to him.
This is a notable news flash segment because it features Kevin Clash. He didn't seem to do very many of these. I can think of only a few others off hand.
noximez: Yep. Jim Henson created all the Muppets--from Sesame Street, to The Muppet Show, to Fraggle Rock, etc.--in terms of design and overall character, but it is the respective performer--in this case Kevin Clash--that would breathe life into the character (in this case, the somewhat slow & annoying-at-times, yet loveable 3-year-old monster called Elmo).
And of course Elmo is bigger than Kermit--even though the latter is older--because he's a monster, whereas Kermie is a frog!
The irony is that this is my first time seeing this clip in English. I have seen this exact same clip only in Spanish on "Plaza Sesamo". Can you beat that? LOL.
I'm afraid to say I think the introduction of Elmo marked the beginning of the end. He was just a bit too cutesy, something that Sesame Street before had always managed to avoid.
Before you know it- shoom! Barney the bloody dinosaur!
I disagree with that. There are hundreds of ways to be entertaining without being cutesy or political. Problem is, SS became cutesy AND political. "Let's count to ten the United Nations way!" (Actual recent muppet quote)
I don't know. Elmo was already around when I started watching Sesame Street (I was born in 1986) and I liked him then. I think the beginning of the end was Jim Henson's death myself. I don't hate Elmo by any means. I just wish he had remained a secondary character the way he started. Unfortunately, children were growing to like him more and more as the years went on and they wanted more. CTW apparently just didn't have the guts to ignore their request.
Ha- I remember this one! Kermit actually had a few good skits with Elmo- this was definitely one of them. But I notice that Elmo was really, really huge in 1986- he looks so much bigger compared to Kermit in this clip.

I think Elmo is suppose to reflect that of a younger brother. wanting to do everything with his big bro to the point where it pisses the older 1 off.

True, but then again, being cutesy was the only way to be both entertaining and apolitical at the same time.
