i'm sure johnson isn't the easiest singer to emulate. he has a pretty unique style.
Yeah his singing does the job. As you said, Tommy Johnson's vocal style is difficult to replicate note for note. I can hit the falsetto notes but choose not to take them that high myself because I don't pull it off as well as old Tommy Johnson.

Thanks ! I can not tell you recorded it, but I can tell you when Tommy Johnson did it : Friday, 3 February 1928, for Victor label.
The very first tune he recorded !!!!!
