  • i know this speaks for true love with a way unhappy ending but is it my idea or she was a bit sellfish?i speak her sisters lost their hairs her father was so sad and the witch begged her to go back to her home and find a merman!again i know its love tha drived her but still a bit of brat and stubborn!

  • 1) I think that instead of killing the prince she could have used the knife to kill to other woman since she knew she was leaving anyway although that defeats the purpose of the moral of the story and 2) Did no one question the fact they are on a boat and Pearl is no where to be found? No one seriously thought she jumped since both people knew she loved the prince and 3) How does he truely love the blonde if he kissed Pearl like 3 times?!! Just saying

  • creepy...

  • why couldnt she just write what she wanted to say

  • @lizzy215isthebest cuz she z a mermaid n cant no how to write i THINK

  • @lizzy215isthebest Well.. lets say she did know how to write..

    What would she write?

'I'm a mermaid who saw you on your ship the other day and I immediately went to the sea witch and got my tail transformed into legs and I traded my voice which is why I can't speak and the only way to get my voice back and permanently keep my voice is for you to kiss me.' Sounds a bit crazy, wouldn't you say?

  • Goddammit, my keyboard is drenched in tears.

  • I think I'd kill myself instead of the man I love too :(( So sad, but true... Women would be silly when they fall in love, but they'd do anything for their men... Poor girl

  • Worst edding ever

  • i have a preference for happy endings as well... But the original story of the little mermaid touches my heart. Disney turned the Little Mermaid into a selfish person...in the original version, she was selfless... she just wanted the person she loved to be happy, with or without her. I love both this version and the Disney version for the record. This will always be my all time favorite fairy tale... Though I'd kill that bitch too lol.

  • I would have killed the blonded haired bitch then kill the prince with her :bb

  • This is so sad. Yet beautiful. I like this version better then the Disney one. It has more truth & meaning. Telling children that not every one can live "happily ever after" so to speak. & Being a un-selfish, caring, & good natured person can set anyone free from suffering...Kids can learn from this. & Understand that you sometimes have too do what is best for others happiness, even if you can never be apart of it. Yes it is a painful tale. But a lot of people can relate to the mermaids story.

  • in the orinigal story - she dies and becomes an angel.

  • @spiritedwolfe Well technically, she doesn't die in a regular sense. Although the stories that she felt her body dissolve, it was of a transition than an actual death. And she becomes a daughter/spirit of the air rather than an angel.

  • in the orinigal story - she dies and becomes an angel.

  • Dammit! what kind of ending is That! NOT COOL! im glad i didnt see this episode when i was little! i would of been pissed as i am now!

  • both Disney and the original story of The Little Mermaid were good, but I like the Disney version better only because I like happy endings! just saying

  • dam.. so sad.. id just take the disney version... i hate sad endings :(

  • OMG :( NOT COOL! This was sad as fuck! Damn Im almost in tears right now. Well Ill be depressed for the next day or two....Geeeezzz!

  • well that ending sucked. instead she should have usedthe knife to sacrifice the prince's wife...just sayin. it would have ended better

  • ho my fucking god, that is freaking helen mirren! haha!

  • wow.. that's a nice reward.. she got to stay as a louse spirit and for the rest of eternity guard the couple which made her miserable to begin with...

  • What new movie?

  • What new movie??

  • I hope the new movie is not like this

  • really,he said his wifes name in his sleep ?isnt it a honey moon?lookin kinda boreing...

  • So sad. I seriously prefer the Disney version.

  • This version is based on the book that originally started the whole "Little Mermaid" franchise. C.A. Reitze wrote the first book then Hans Christian Anderson adapted it.

  • @fieryredruby

C.A Reitze published it not wrote it

  • I like Pearl's dress here in this part, than the other.

  • In the whole Original vs. Disney debate...well, I like both for different reasons. I think the original story of The Little Mermaid is beautiful because of the sacrifice especially in the end. But I also like the Disney spin on it to have a villain involved.

And to say that Disney makes everything fluffy and cute isn't really true. Sure they might change things or lighten things up, but they still kept some dark parts.

  • @wizardwarrior713 I remember when the Disney version came out...I don't think the faerie tale was as known until then. It's funny because whenever people have brought up the Disney verison they look to me and say "you know in the actual story The Little Mermaid dies" and I am like "No kidding?" But at any rate critics took more issue with the content vs. the fact this ushered in a fresh new generation of Disney films based off of stories. And I for one feel the Disney villians are pretty scary.

  • this is horrible!!!! wtf she was suppose to end up with the prince

  • @Guesswho43110 Actually, this is true to the original tale. Disney is famous for screwing with fairytales to make them all cutesy.

  • @DoggTheFrickFrack that may be true but who want to watch a movie where the main character dies! that's horrible for children

  • @Guesswho43110 Everything dies eventually. Besides, the point of these old stories was not simply to entertain but to pass on lessons. The soulless mythical creature did something selfless so the person she loved would be happy, and in doing so she gained a soul and became a guardian angel.

Disney's wrap-everything-in-cotton-wool movies have their place. Personally I love Fairy Tale Theatre because they kept everything to the original stories as much as possible.

  • That is the saddest ending ever. I prefer the Disney version. I cannot stand it that he thought that... that... faker had rescued him!

  • That was just too sad.

  • it would suck to watch the one you love living happily for the rest of their lives with another woman.

  • SO THE ORIGANAL FAIRYTALES WERE TRAGETYS THATS WHAT MY FRIEND TYLER TOLD ME

  • that was sadddddddddddd

    tooooooooooooooooo sad

  • sadddddd oneeeeeeee

  • i think i prefer the disney version it has a happy ending, this one is really sad :(

  • The book version I read as a child was much better, because Pearl didn't have to spend her timne watching her prince and his bride. She simply became a daughter of the air. It would be an eternal punishment, I think, to watch over your beloved, making love to another woman!

  • Oh.

  • Oh my, this version has a sad ending, however, I did love thier version also... It portrays unselfish love and true love... But it made me cry though... :)) Aw.... Poor Pearl...

  • I do not like this ending. I mean what the heck was that and her sisters cut their hair off so she could come back wow but that is a little far tho I couldn't do it either. But then I wouldn't have chosen to turn into sea foam neither. Like the witch said " no guy is worth it"

  • the disney version is better i think

  • sad... T_T

  • Does Pearl ever get her voice back?

  • @shiradaniel I'm sure she did when she became the spirit of the air.

  • i would have stabbed hm.

  • This is so sad... But I actually like it better than the classic Disney version ending. But how could the prince not love her more???

  • actually some legends say that for a mermaid to get a soul she has to marry a human man

maybe her sacrifice earned her a soul

  • THAT WAS REALLY NICE.:)

  • i think the ending it sad but somehow in this movie it was made to look happy and i didnt feel sad

  • such a sad story :D but a good ending :D

  • If I was the mermaid, I'd haunt the spirit of the bitch who stole my man! God, what a painful story.

  • I'd feel flattered if I lost my man to someone as awesome as Helen Mirren, but I'd still make the bitch pay. PAY!!!!

  • I'd be flattered to lose my man to an awesome gal like Helen Mirren, but still, in the end, I'd make the bitch pay. PAY!!!

  • @emlodik She should have just stabbed her instead.

  • I would've stabbed him! Just kidding! Great story!

  • Love the beautiful ending...so so sweet that she kisses them both and watches over them with love.

  • I watched this as a little girl and always loved it. Watching it again and relating to that feeling of giving everything you have to another person and losing everything for them. . .wow I had a pretty violent cry reaction. . .

  • In a weird way, I like it better because it feels more realistic. I love how in the Disney one Ursula says that he has to show his true love within 3 days, or "in other words, he has to kiss you" but a kiss doesn't mean true love. This version proves that. It's depressing, but realistic.

  • this is the true story!

  • i like disneys version better

    but this is pretty good

  • argggg beautiful story indeed..thank u :)

  • nice story i never seen little mermaid story like this

  • Poor girl. What a horrible siruation to have to fall into!

  • What I like about this version is that's more emotionally complex. The princess didn't have nearly as big a part in the original story, but her role gives the story the sense that there is no such thing as true love, or at least it's not that simple. And I like how even the witch had a moral dilemma going on. It's not so black-and-white, just like real life.

  • The woman who plays the Little Mermaid is sooo beautiful!

Totally DID NOT like the prince I was hoping he loved Pearl more passionately...as is suggested by his fiery kiss with her... but he kisses Amelia longer. Eww! Amelia is such a bitch! And Pearl, you deserve better!

  • That bitch (Amelia) is actress Ellen Mirren....best actress Oscar winner for ''The Queen" nothing less....off course now she's on her early 60's but here she looks so young (maybe on her late 20's)

And agree.....the actress who played as the little mermaid is such a beauty.

  • that's helen mirren?????? wow had no idea

  • i know the prince was a deuce pearl deserved better

but amelia is helen mirren (elizabeth the golden age, the queen)

  • Elizabeth the golden age was Cate Blanchett

Helen Mirren was in the queen and a mini series in 2005 called Elizabeth I

  • oopsie

well their both awsomeley cool anyways :)

  • UMMM.... Helen Mirren was not Elizabeth in "The Golden Age."

  • i don't care i get the two confused

    common mistake

  • Anyone who has truly really loved someone knows that they wouldn't have had the heart to stab that person.

    So sad and so true.

  • Kind of silly that she just tossed the dagger on to the floor and just fading away on the spot. What they should have done after she kissed him was run straight out to the deck, threw the dagger into the sea, and dive off into the waters after.

  • @Jakegothicsnake she did throw it into the sea in the anime version of the Little Mermaid. When she did that, there was a flash of red lightning and the prince woke up in time to see her dive off the edge of the ship into the sea. He sees the hairpin and the scale from her tail she left behind THEN he realizes who she really was. T_T

  • @cybertail I know that's what she did, I've also saw that adaption. The part I'm refering to is the book version.

  • @Jakegothicsnake They did that in the 1975 cartoon version. Very nice and very touching.

  • @Jakegothicsnake i was thinking the same thing. i would have just dived into the ocean if i was her. whether she would drown or turn back into a mermaid, the water was originally her home.

  • @Jakegothicsnake That's how the anime ended. D:

  • @pandacake Yeah, but that's how it also ends in the book as well.

  • @Jakegothicsnake True dat. D: It's rare that anyone goes by the book, anymore.

  • now on another note i would have stabbed the bastard and gone home to my family....

  • me too!

  • The tale itself is considered by some feminists to contain a message about love and self-sacrifice, and the dangers of accepting abuse or inconsiderate treatment in the name of love

  • to the person who said there is no moral to the story you are very wrong. Andersen (the guy who wrote the ORIGINAL STORY) was known for using Christian values in his stories, one possible interpretation is that love of God is greater than romantic love, as the mermaid is betrayed by her prince, but is ultimately spared death, and becomes an angelic being. The Corpse Bride, another folktale, is another example of this

  • I read that on Wikipedia!

  • LOL I would have stabbed him. She was majorly, majorly jipped in that story. :)

  • I never liked this episode when I was a kid because the sad ending always made me mad. I know now how well done this really was

  • liked it better when i was little

  • Two heartless...FREAKS!

If it was me, I'd kill him and it his heart and give the rest to the sisters. I still don't know why she liked that Man-Whore!!

But when it comes to the show, I LOOOOVED this episode.

  • Logically, the prince is not actually Pearl's true love because he does not love her enough in return.

There are other fish in the sea & etc, but when you love someone so deeply, you know that every other person will not be *that* one, and that is who you want, and some people do love that deeply and just can;t be with anyone else. It's not a psychological defect or "getting over it" in modern parlance. Some of us are that deep. I cannot replace one love with another, it is not my way.

  • your over thinkin it. It wasnt true love because it wasnt recieved on both ends but to Pearl is was HER...just HER true love

  • He loved her .. . . but not enough. This is also a story typical of Scandinavia. What I dislike is that there is no logic in love, that you can love one person so much and they not you. Logically, the prince is not the little mermaid;s true love if he does not love her enough as well. But she does love him truly. He is her first love as well, a powerful thing in itself.

  • that just sucks! I cant believe that the little mermaid got jipped like that. I feel so bad for her.

  • Yes, but that is part of what makes it a great story. There really i sno moral. When love happens it happens. Love does not care for laws or rules it pierces every heart with its truth.

  • o.m.g.!!!! this is so sad!

  • The Little Mermaid's no ordinary fairy tale.

  • that actress Pam gamber is a beatiful woman. she does look like a mermaid.

i still cry at the original Mermaid story.

  • This made me cry when I was a kid. I just love how they didn't realize Pearl was gone and they're just happy-go-lucky. I woulda stabbed him. lol

  • Pearl could not. If you do harm your true love, you inevitably wound yourself in far worse ways. Living with the scars of knowing you hurt the one you love most is worse than death, actually.

  • The first time in my young life that I was profoundly mournful.

  • I feel Prince Andrew could have loved Pearl with a passion that shocked and frightened him. . .yet fulfilled him more than anything he had ever known. . .

Prince Andrew will never love Princess Amelia with the passion he could have loved Pearl because marriage to Princess Amelia fulfills his needs as a monarch, yet sacrifices his needs as a man. . .

Prince Andrew's role as monarch will never be as fulfilling as his passionate marriage to Pearl could have been. . .and that is a tragedy. . .

  • I don't know. He said Amelia's name in his sleep. Not Pearl's.

  • Oh my gosh that was so flippin sad.

    JSG

  • so she protects happy couples but never gets to be in a relationship herself?

  • Pearl, you look so sad. What's the matter? Is the prince gonna marry somebody else? Oh no, Pearl! It can't be true. If he marries

another woman, then on the morning after his wedding night, you will lose your human form and turn into sea foam. Isn't that what the sea witch said? No! Oh, I can't bear the thought of you dying, Pearl! There must be some way out of this! No! I don't believe you have to die! You're too good, Pearl! I can't say goodbye forever! I can't! I can't!

  • This is a quote from TOEI's "The Little Mermaid" (1975) as said by the mermaid's dolphin friend Fritz (Thor Bishopric), except that the mermaid from this particular flick is called Marina.

  • Anemone: Catch it, Pearl! The Sea Witch: Pierce him to the heart and when his heart's blood spills on your human legs, they will chang back into a tail. Coral: You'll become a mermaid again. Anemone: And then you may return to us in your undersea home. Coral: Once you've slained the prince, you'll be out of danger. But you must hurry: Anemone: Father is very worried about you. Coral: You can be with us again, Pearl. Be quick! The sun will rise soon! (continued)

  • Coral: Come back to us, Pearl! Anemone: Pearl, come back to us. Coral and Anemone: Please, Pearl, come back to us. We'll be waiting, Pearl! Pearl: I can't. I can't do it. The Prince's happiness is my happiness. Yes! It's the only way. I must return to the sea where I was born, where I belong. (continued)

  • Pearl: Only through my death, can I keep my love for the prince true and pure and perhaps when I have lost my human form and turn into sea foam, fall upon the surface of the ocean, I may yet find a way to be a service to my prince and to others. For whose heart was never meant to be mine, nevertheless, I've learned the meaning of true love. I want to be with him and around him always even if it's only in the form of a clear fine sea foam. (continued)

  • Pearl: Goodbye, father. Goodbye, Coral and Anemone, my dear sisters. I'm sorry I couldn't meet you tonight. Farewell, sweet prince. May happiness be yours.

  • Pearl: The wedding ceremony is over. It will soon be dawn. The first ray of sunshine will bring my death. Coral & Anemone: Pearl! Pearl! Over here, Pearl! Pearl: Coral! Anemone! Your hair! What happened? Anemone: Pearl, listen to us. Coral: We went to see the sea witch. We needed her help to save your life. Anemone: She made us give her our hair. Coral: In return for this knife. It's the only way out, Pearl! Anemone: You may still come back. Coral: All you may do is kill the prince. (continued)

  • It has been one of my all time favourite, thanks for posting this!

  • Thats so sad...:'(

  • Yeah, the different non-Disney versions are depressing. There is one where she has to kill the prince for the sea witch, there is one where she kills herself (either with the dagger or by throwing herself into the sea).

  • thank you so much for posting this! i have been looking forward to seeinf my loverly helen mary the prince! yay! she ooks ever so beautiful. and i love treat williams in here. he's so handsome! i never pictured them together before now. ;)

  • depressing :-(
