  • Excellent lesson Dave, thank you, take care.

  • eddie's existence guaranteed everyone a job...

  • youre cool - "I may be a little out of tune cas' I had a gig this weekend." do you only tune your guitar for gigs?...lame. this lesson was for mediocre players btw.

  • this sounds awesome and it gave me an idea for a different approach on tapping, thank you sir!

  • Nice demo and playing, I'm kind of new to tapping but really interested. Can you tell me why you tune down a half step?

Nice guitar, I have a Parker too and they play like a dream!

  • NICE PARKER

  • lol picking noise lol

  • this guys boogers shred

  • lol you look like estaban from the show weeds xD

  • Hey when i stand up and alternate pick i hit the strings from an angle and i suck when im doing that , have tried lots of different positions the only one working so far is zakk wyldes guitar on knee please reply if you have help? (When i alternate pick i use arm motion not using wrist motion)

  • well your parker makes it pretty easy with the action touching the frets. yeah that's right i look up reviews. lol. thanks for the lessons

  • Thanks Dude!!! pretty awesome!!!! hehehehhe

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar that is

  • @JAVARI1000 parker fly, butt ugly but great sound!

  • Hey nice technique!!

I never thought it's this easy until i found ya!

    thx a lot man!!

  • what was the second voice at 2:49 :O

  • Thank you so much for talking and doing things fast, every other lesson seems to be split over 40mins and acheive nothing.

    + you're actually useful

  • CHECK OUT MY TAPPING VIDEOS , YOU WOULD HAVE NEVER THOUGHT OF MY TECHNIQUE!!!!

  • Nice vid great tutorial

  • great lesson

  • Hey man, cool video. I gotta say you kind of remind me of The Rock, especially when you do the people's eyebrow at 3:15 haha! Anyway, I digress...

  • i typed in advanced guitar tutorial and found your video...and I wanted you to tab "Need to Love" (the acoustic version) both guitar parts for me!!!! I REALLY need to know how to play it.

  • abcdeghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

  • m8 why i cant get sound without picking? i m not doing anything wrong its just a prob or something i got an ibanez grg170dx 6 months and i dont know why i dont get sound maybe strings to tight?

  • Dave, I learned this lick from here a couple years ago and use it all the time. Thanks!

  • Pretty Savage man

    Thanks a million

    :D

  • i gotta say AWESOME

  • fret markers their called inlays :P am missing them on mine also !!

  • this vid is really good but its something i had learned myself, i was hoping for something i haven't encountered just through my own playing. something that geniuses like Paul Gilbert and co come up with, do you have anything like that?

  • nice lesson but bad sound bad guitar sorry dude

  • Nice lesson. I think that your explanation of G Mixolydian would probably be a bit confusing for most students (especially considering the fact that you ended on the note A- which is just A Aeolian, or A Natural Minor). Also, in your first tapping lick you were tapping an F-Natural on the third string 10th fret. This gives an interesting effect because it's the only note that isn't in A Minor Pentatonic. But you might consider tapping the 3rd string 9th fret (E), and tell your students why.

  • @skiingguitarist yeah, I've seen similar comments about the notes outside of the pentatonic and about the mixolydian. I am just referring to the left hand of course. The are too many variables, so, as with all, experiment.

  • thanks for the reply. Anyway, keep up the good lessons!

  • @skiingguitarist wow... im a fairly educated musician but i have yet to come across something i do not undrstand so genuinely... then again im 15 and havent looked into those modes before

  • @skiingguitarist Modes have nothing to do with what note you start or end on.

  • Manne guitar from Andreea Balarinni

  • sei brutto =)

  • PHENOMENAL! Thank You for such a detailed, easy-to-understand tutorial!

  • @312chicagoadam That is kind of you to say. You are welcome and thanks also!

  • @Arazmo I find myself using this riff all the time now :p I enjoy it a lot.

  • is that a parker fly?

  • its EADGBe or DADGBe?

    its 12 8 5 10 5??

  • Dude.. I love playing guitar and have done for many years. I watch this and I want to cry because I`ll never be this good..... Sigh...

  • He said that his guitar might be a little out of tune, what was his reason? Something he had done last weekend?

  • thats a reb bach tecniqce

  • dave, that's an awesome guitar, Parker Fly axes are sick.. you don't see them very much any more... sounds good play on

  • hey amigo gracia maestro...ia le di, esta bien cool tu la escala...batalle un poco pero creo que ia la tengo...con mucha practica ...le dare asi de fast como tu ...salutos desde tj

  • wow...i never thought you could get any other sound then blues by using minor pentetonics

  • Hey Dave,

I can execute the notes pretty well, but I have trouble dampening/muting strings while tapping. I can't see in the video that you are deliberately muting in any way, but maybe I'm missing something. Do you have any advice for muting unwanted noise while tapping?

    Thanks!

  • @rouby44 use both hands at different times to mute... probably more with the right hand. For instance, while you tap on the 2nd string, cover the other stings with your right palm and also touch the 3rd string with the tips of your left fingers (not to fret, but to keep that sting quiet.)

  • @rouby44 yeah... i mute higher string with my left hand and lower strings with my right had or sometimes my forearm if im at the lower frets... but that can mess u up sometimes

  • nice man sounds awesome and somehow only took like 4 minutes to master

  • nice one mate

  • People like you who take the time to give guitar lessons are really cool in my book.

  • cheers mate, you are a very good teacher, i just pulled off those tapping excercises, you teach very well....

  • @otnlimestr advaced is a relative term. Certainly this is easy for a prodigy like yourself. Many other "regular" guitarists get it. Andy James is great. Don't be a douche bag.

  • @Arazmo it is Advanced,...he is certainly a douche bag.

  • @otnlimestr u bitch.....this helped when i was a noob

  • You're tapping hand hits an f note on the g string on the first lick.. Would it still be pentatonic minor if I tapped F# or E note on 3rd string, Would the name change of the scale? Or stay the same? Those notes over A pentatonic trip me out? The only time i use an F note is over a rainbow in the dark type of chord rhythm, or stairway to heaven, Actually I use it a lot ..Good lesson..

  • Hey: Nice lesson. I jammed with you once at the Ringside at some benefit where Billy... can't remember the last name, but he was your student...was playing.

  • @ocripes Billy Norris, he's on the rockstar path now in Gavin Degraw's band...

  • Thanks! This riff sounds really cool and it's really easy. I got it down in about 3 min (with almost 3 years of guitar experience).

  • @PrelimseStudios you da man!

  • can you please tab out the scale like put it in numbers but i cant read notes

  • No I will not excuse you for picking your nose

  • well done a nice easy but difficult sounding riff thanks a lot!

  • palm mute the bass strings while you tap the high strings to avoid the white noise

  • if your out of tune tune your guitar!

  • @bioloidboy You're right, guys like him try to act professional but when I hear txt like this I wanna laugh. He could tune it before he turned camera on.

  • This is a cool video, If only I wasn't so stubborn about sticking to late 60's early 70's style I would finger tap but thanks for time to teach people this stuff.

  • This dude is cool

  • Wow!Our preferences are very different,I've never liked Fender and DiMarzio is the pick up of choice for me or Carvin 22's but hey that's what makes the world go around right?Have a good one.

  • G mixolydian is a major scale...look it up on the internet...

  • Good lesson.I'm a Washburn exclusively man but I own a Raven West too.I like the fretboard myself ;one of my Washburn's has a phenolic fretboard and they do have great feel and resonance. That Parker fly mojo is rather pricey but super nice. Do you prefer the compound fretboard over ebony or rosewood for finger tapping or does it not matter to you?

  • @MrRivethead I did like my Parker but I let it go. It played well but I never really liked the Dimarzio pickups.

I would have put Seymore Duncans in it, but it's a hassle.

I never liked the body style either, but loved that it weighed almost nothing and the peizo pickup was killer.

  • ... and I did really like the neck and fret board on the Parker fly. I like maple necks too like on my teles...

  • This is indeed a Parker fly...but a carbon guitar? Why would you do such a thing???

  • Thanks men

  • This is my favourite tuning for home recording for the last 2years.

  • afinala bien compadre

  • NICE GUITAR I LOVE PARKERS

  • nice one,

  • EXCELENT LESSON,A GREAT LICK,and I loved your comments wrote in the video verry funny!

  • nice tune & show but you could have started the full minor a bit slower dude.

  • seriously. thank you for this lesson. i'm eternally in you debt.

  • i want the tab!!!!

  • the first lick reminds of the PC computer, starting melody, on piano.

  • This is not an advanced lesson.

  • Thank you for a nice lesson. The riff itself is nice enough, but I really like it for the ideas it put into my head about how to start tapping in new ways I hadn't thought of myself.

  • nice guitar dood!

  • как мудак говорит

  • gracias bueno el aporte!! :)

  • haha, everyone is allowed to have their own opinion :) i prefer the way Ibanez makes guitars.. or LTD... or ESP .. Jackson too. :)

    Indeed awesome video!

  • I have seen your videos and you are a very good guitar player, I have no doubt about it, but please, change the title of this video...you use just one finger of your right hand and very easy scales...Advanced tapping? Not really! First lesson of tapping for beginner, of course.

  • Thank you! This is the nicest way I've ever seen someone comment or critique on YT. I know that this is not the MOST advanced tapping there is, however it is advanced for most players who are used to Halen or Hammet types of tapping... and certainly not a 1st lesson.

I have taught for over 20 years to know this.

  • is that a guitar made of carbon? ive seen one of those before and the guy said he buyed it for 3700 euro and its made of carbon

  • i think it's a parker fly, dunno what material it's made of

  • Certain acoustic guitars are made of carbon fiber, mostly due to the increasing scarcity of decent tone wood, and supposedly have a really nice sound from what I've been told. However, I've never heard of a carbon fibre solid-body, so I doubt it.

  • the second tapping technique with the minor scale (mixolydian is a ridiculous term personally) is probably the most useful as it provides you the ability to use all the notes, which gives opportunities to piece together a lot of different and interesting things. Vai uses this technique a lot in his tapping.

  • nice video good sounding guitar!

Hidious guitar though.. but good sound :)

  • i cant get my guitar to sound that clean and still allow me to tap

  • hahahaa u hold the guitar like a classical and not an electric...my friend does that too

  • greAT job mann

  • Beeeeeeeeeee is an a sharppp... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee lol!

  • that's very good man, i always get confuse when i'm doing a pentatonic and tapping. :D

  • This explains all the great guitar players coming out of Tampa.

  • i feel seasick after watching this

    hold the camera still

  • Ed Van Halen invented tapping 2009 years ago. Its copyrighted and trademarked. Nobody but Ed may and CAN tap

  • not to be rude....Unfourtunally for all the Van Halen fans (I know I am going to be insulted LOL) he DID NOT invented tapping...There is a british guitarist called Steve Hackett that used this technique in the earlies 70's before Eddie even know he was going to be such a great guitarist. You can listen a progressive band called Genesis (Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins may be more popular) to check this...No doubt Eddie made it more common and perfect though...Peace

  • Its useful as an expressive tool but for the love of God (=Ed) - why do do players like Ed have to cram every song, every solo with endless, rote noodling?

  • everyone knows he didnt invent it... but neither did Steve Hackett, Chet atkins was using tapping before that even, and im sure he picked it up from someone.

  • The great Tal Farlow was known to throwing in some tapping in the 40s and 50s... Nothing new under the sun.

  • Eddie said in an interview once that he actually saw Jimmy Page use that technique before and that's how he got the idea. I believe tapping was just a violin tech. transfered over to guitar.

  • awsome

  • You're not really explaining very well what you're doing with your left hand. the vague description you gave wasn't very clear.

  • Oh come on. Advanced my arse. I can do that on my bass in pitch black for christ sake. Try changing the title to "basic tapping patterns" and you'll get better responses

  • I saw your bass video. I doubt it.

  • Nah, don't big yaself up mate lol. Just because I wasn't doing anything complicated, doesn't mean I can't do this lol. Trust me, I know my playing a LOT better than you do. I can play it, trust me

  • Sure pal. We trust you.

  • lol. You're not very popular on here are you?

If im completely honest, I couldn't care less if you believe me or not lol. Whether or not you believe me has no relevance what so ever to me

  • I dunno. The youtube critics have this video at 4.5 stars and over 300k views. If you really didn't care, you would not have responded.

  • Maybe they thought it was supposed to be bad tapping =]

The reason I keep responding is because I find you so amusing =]

  • ha thats tellin him lol

  • haha put down

  • how is that advanced?

  • It's all relative. For guys born with a guitar in their hands and world renowned skills like you, this is child's play for sure. For most rock guitarist with a few years of experience, one might be challenged with this at first.

  • Haha great response, I think you battered his pretentious ego.

  • awsome riff, great lesson, but not a fan of the guitar haha =P

  • Parker.... That's some expensive shit right there!

  • great tutorial ^^

  • really good tutorial man :)

  • thats an ugly ass guitar!

  • isn't it hahahaha

  • Advanced tapping? where is it? the video that I see has 4:48 minutes, is there a longer, more advanced version?

Oh, and who really cares what tuning the guitar has? Everyone to dumb to tell by listening isn't going to try this anyway...

  • hey, I thought this was tapping! what's with the picking?

  • the picking of the nose? LOL

  • this doesn't quite seem advanced, it's more around intermediate since it's simple patterns and there aren't any obscene string skipping techniques or anything of that caliber.

  • its a parker fly not custom...a little passe'

  • Lol never seen one and i have some experience lol.

  • Tipe bak amk :D

  • fukinidiot

  • Very informative .. thanks.. .great talent..

Can you comment on what you are playing through?

  • jow jow jow

  • most of SOAD is DROP C douche bag..and there new shit is tuned to half a step down form Drop D ASSHOLE

  • Oh, Drop C douche bag and Drop D asshole, thanks for sharing. What would the world be without you little youtube critic/ self-proclaimed genius name-callers?

    Hahaha...

  • it would be boring...and anytime my friend.

  • nice i have my guitar tuned the same way lol.......anyway i love how the tapping sounds like a row of notes for every string ill defenetly try that some time

  • ive not heard of those tunings before, is that what they started using after the first album when they became wank?

  • are you sure they don't tune it to Drop D asshole sharp?also on a tuner wheres the symbol for asshole and douche bag?my tuner doesn't display that symbol for some reason,it just shows a picture of your face and IQ.good job scoreing a 4 on your IQ test!of couse you realize you get 90 points for sighning your name correctly, right ?

  • how the fuck did you get my scores..my mom said only she would see it you assclown.

  • is this good for speeches..thats all i need this for?

  • haha got it, but can i use this for a speech i'm giving. nothing big at all

  • this would would be a hella lot easier with tabs.

i usually play stuff by ear, but its tough right here

  • mojo :D

  • i like your vid but stop raising your eyebrows like that u look like a rapest!!! lol

  • i got the notes and stuff and frets but not the way you tap

  • good lesson, man! well explained, clearly shown..

    what parker is that?

  • You're my new hero. You must be rich!

People with extreme God-like talent like you are very rare.

Thank you so much for commenting on little old me.

  • That's alright. Just keep practicing.

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent demonstration. Very well explained! Cheers!

  • Great vid

  • lol 3:13

  • Wooooooow nice

  • good demonstration...parkers are so damn ugly...however they are quality instruments..

  • lol the guy has the same sort like Kristofer Dahl!!

  • Thank you :) you explained it in an easy way!

  • how do u keep it loud when u r tapping. whenever i do a section with a lot of hammer ons or pull offs without any picking my sound always goes mute and it sounds like im tapping a dead string

  • Really only one way to do it, other than adding gain, just tap a lot, and build up muscle, so you can tap harder. Tapping harder makes more volume. That only works for hammer ons though, for pull offs you just have to do more of a downward motion, or upward if you want, so that you pluck the string with the pull off.

  • try tapping harder, or just turn up a lil bit more volume, thats how i resolve these problems.
