We had school charity projects in the USA. We had a choice of a local family or someone elsewhere, and a few details from a social worker. It was fun to give them new, useful things in their sizes and food which was still fresh and edible. What, this would be a no no now? We knew it was only a bandaid but we had a month or two to accumulate cash and USEFUL items and watch the pile grow. Anonymity was kept and I had the IMPRESSION the stuff really went to locals -- we always chose locals.
