We own a APHA gelding that was started at 2 and is now almost 3, he is very healthy, nothing wrong with his joints, ligaments or anything and he rides like a 15 yr old extremely experienced horse, he is my wife's horse and she trusts him to take her any where on the trail they want to go. So I see no reason why horses can not be started at 2 if the trainer is willing to take it slow with the horse, No rushing means a Better Horse!
there is no reason why you cant get up on a horse at 2. you can get up on friesians, warmbloods, etc, they just cant be worked! there is nothing wrong with walking them around a ring like this guy is doing. it wont hurt them!
is everyone kind of missing the point here? quarter horses mature mentally and physically quicker than your average breed. i have a yearling quarter horse and the vet thought he was a 5 year old when she came to give him a flu and tetnus injection. this horse is as clearly stated the grandson of smart chic olena. anyone who has invested that kind of money into their horses obviously knows what their doing! further more i see now problems with anything in this video. so haters be hating lol!
@NaturalHorseman2011 Exactly! My Barn Owner has a 22 year old as if right now. She started to ride him when he was 2 years old. Hes happy, healthy, and in VERY good shape. Plus hes a Paint. It just depends on the horse. :)
Hope my new stud i am getting is this easy :) And people he has not ruined this colt. My mare was started at two and is now 13 and has no problems, people even say her body is around where a five year olds would be. Now if they hadn't done their homework and this horse was bucking and acting a fool, then yes, that could hurt the horse. Studying Equine Vet. Just Sayin.
It's OFFICIAL. You've Ruined that Horse!! What idjits. We always 'start' the 2yo, quiet, soft and gentle just like you're doing. Keep em quiet and soft, put 30 quiet days on them, turn them out and restart them 6 months later. THEN you've got something. Why wait til they are 3 or 4 and strong enough to getchya!? You're doing it they we all SHOULD do it...
@HRGeventing 2yrs oldis the average age to ride. My 2yr old had her 2nd ride today. My 15yr old gelding started his training at 2yrs old. And is very healthy, theres nothin wrong with his bones, or ligaments. And btw it did him a lot of good. He built muscle and got stronger. Now he's a great, healthy, and happy horse.
@HRGeventing bleh! depends on the horse. their not being worked, not hard work. no jumping. just alittle w/t nothing wrong with that. some horses mature faster than others, the QH breed for ex. this is fine
@HRGeventing I am into warmblood, draft crosses, sport horses, and thoroughbred and I agree with you. I think you should at least wait till they are 3, and only ride super lightly. Ground work come before riding, and you can always improve on it, so there is no need to rush to a ride. Although quarter horses mature sooner, I think riding a horse should come later, like the warmblood breeders do. I don't know what some stock horse breeders are thinking these days.
i agree with thecrowman793, i have a 2 yo that rides like a champ and never comes off the trail hurting, he loves going for a ride

they should be stared atleast at 4 yrs old, doing it young just leads to problems when they get to be in the double digits

one of the greatest horses in history (secretariat) was trained and raced at 2 years old so dont say crap
