  • is this boston?

  • I hope the gh3 has an apsc sized sensor. i might actually buy it.

  • Thanks Arnold, great comparison.

  • Are you from France?

  • Get to the choppa!

  • the canon is better, because the pana makes me sleepy...

  • 24fps, not 24mbs!

  • @chanmyasoe yes, 24mbs

  • as far as image quality is concerned, the red of the bricks from the 5dmk2 seems more close to the real world bricks colors (bricks in the gh2 are too orange) and the black seems deeper also so i prefer the 5dmk2 (i own a gh1 so there is no bias).

in order to have a price/perf comparison i would love to see a comparison at roughly the same price so gh2+nokton 25mm f0.95=$2000 against 5dmk2+50mmf1.8=$2300. can the faster lens on the gh2 compensate the smaller sensor in low light ?

  • Great video keep up the good work.

  • Sorry type, able to shoot clean green screen, can the gh2 do this?

  • Mile I love your videos, and I think the ex3 is the best green screen camera but too much for me, you know another camera that's rally AB

  • Mike24p. There will never b a gh3, war!

  • After u sell ur gh2 what u getting boy?

  • @mike24p Worth waiting for the GH3? I'm tempted to buy the GH2 now. When is the GH3 coming out? I've no proper camera at present.

  • The GH2 beats for me the 5D hands down. Anyway like OSFAN25 said after all it's not the camera what it matters, it's the person behind it.

  • Of course the 5D mark II has a more film like image which is more color grading friendly, but guys, we are talking about two totally different categories and price range. Just for that reason, the GH2 is clearly the winner! Most 5D uses would never care for a continuous AF on video mode, but the average GH2 buyers, like me, do care about it in more everyday life situations. The touch screen is amazing to change the focus manually while filming btw!

  • @poprip - you are right these 2 setups are not in the same price category ($2000 vs $3600), unfortunately for those who need af during live events there is no AF on the gh2 with the nokton lens but you should mention that the gh2 also have the advantage of not having a time limit on recording as the 5dmk2 has (not important for film but important for interviews or live events ). improved bitrates on the gh2 (firmware hack required) is also a good point for the gh2.

  • The 5d looks like it has better quality. Using an L lens though will make anything look better. I'm not super familiar with the gh2 but I know that when you put a 5d or even a t2i in the right hands you will get professional results. It's not the camera but rather the person behind it that makes great video.

  • Great comparison, thanks very much for this. Quick question.... do you see any difference in final video, between the GH1 & GH2 when both are set at 24p? Thanks Mike.

  • GH2 is awesome. I've teamed it up with a heap of Canon FD lens and my panoramics are impressive. For the value and tech and use with others lens. GH2 shits on the 5DII

  • gh2 is the best dslr on the planet for video

  • @fargee79 yeah, it's very good for video, even more in it's price range!

*GH2 is not a DSLR, because there is no reflex mirror or pentaprism inside the body, so it can't be a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera. the GH2 is a Mirrorless system camera, but some people also call it part of the CSC (Compact System Camera).

  • canon hot sensor

    gh2 no hot sensor

    sorry no english

  • When you using 24p setting on GH2, did the continue auto focus still works?

  • why did you tape over the brand logos?

  • you really sound like Arnold Shwarzznegger!

    Great video :)

  • @stastrav "UZZi 90MM " XD

thats the only thing I was thinking about while listening to his voice during the whole video

  • no buddy your rigt f0.95 vs f1.2 isnt fair because a f0.95 is actually the canon equivalent of an m4/3 at 1.8 for DOF! the canon lens should be slowed down to get a proper comparison not the panasonic.

To the poster of this video.. thank you for this. it was rich. how do you handle the banding issue on the panasonic.. can u give me an insight?

  • The one thing I can't take out of my head about this comparison are the high lights in the background. At 1:04 for the GH2 and at 1:30 for the 5D Mk II, the GH2 saturation looks more "electronic", it glows around the roofs of the buildings. The 5D seems to output cleaner edges and a softer saturation in this area of the picture. This certainly is related to the sensor size (details) but also its sensibility (contrast).

  • @Skcrog86 this is a really biased assesment. that could totally be due to the lens not the sensor or cam. try turning down sharpening and contrast on the gh2 and it will give you similar effects.

  • Has anyone seen the video shot on these cameras on a professional high grade monitors?

All the tests I have seen has been on You tube or Vimeo

  • Quite a lot of CA on GH2 (well, on Nocton), bit suprised.

  • Thanks for the comparison, Photonator

  • That GH2 is insane. Getting mine in a month.

  • sanks for wotsching

  • The 5d has the best picture by far should you desire the film look. The flat image is great for post color grading. The GH2 is far to contrasted. I only use Leica glass to get even MORE dynamic range. This confirms for me that there isn't a digital camera out there yet that can produce a film like image more so than the 5d other than the RED.

  • @CrookedMovies I completely agree with u on this.

I do a lot of color grading and i prefer the look of canons. The gh2 is in fact the overall winner in sharpness, nothing more to my eye. I have them both,

  • Seems like both cams outresolve youtube's encoder.

  • @Walvis2007 I don't think the Canon 5D outresolves the 720 resolution. IMO if Mike uploaded the 1080 version the GH2 would show its clear adventage.

  • IMO, using a micro 4/3 sensor reduces the effect of bokeh. but when you want a wider DOF, that sensor is at an advantage because you can use very wide apertures and still get your desired DOF. which means brighter photos and videos.

  • f0.95 isn't a fair test against f1.2. You should put the aperture up to 1.2 on the Nokton otherwise the images won't have the same depth. If you do this I would love to see another video.

  • @IsaacSloan not true, two different sensor sizes (5D2/ M43) therefore we use a multiplication factor of 2 for focal length, which means the Nokton 25mm has the same field of view as the 50mm on the Canon. Now when it comes to aperture, the Nokton 25mm 0.95 BEHAVES like a 50mm 2.0 would on the Canon. To be fair, I would have had to change the aperture on the 50mm mounted on the Canon, to 2.0! This test is not about fairness but to show the maximum bokeh on two different sized sensors.

  • @mike24p Thanks for the fast response. I was aware that 25mm at 4/3 was equal to 50mm at full frame. I wasn't aware that the aperture would double too. I have a 50mm f1.8 on my Canon D5. Does that mean that it actually lets in more light than an fstop of 0.95 on a four thirds camera?

  • @IsaacSloan, no, what it means is, it behaves like a 50mm/2.0 in terms of DOF, take two shots, one with the 50mm 1.8 mounted on the 5D and one with the 25mm Nokton mounted on the GH1, (same distance to subject, both lenses wide open) and the result will pretty much look the same

  • @mike24p Ok thanks. I think i get it now. Its basically like you took a full frame picture and just cropped it.

  • @mike24p they both look like crap...i'm not into the short DOF thing...it looks generic! i want everything to be clear when taking video....which camera is the best for that? Why are these DSLR's so bad with auto focus? why can't they improve that already? These len's are so fucking expensive and they can't even auto focus! The camera is expensive as it is, it should at lease be able to do that

  • @mike24p You're wrong. The same field of view does not mean the same depth of field also. FOV will be equal in your test but DOF is shallower on a 50mm than a 25mm, just as it would be if both lenses were tested on the same camera. It's impossible to do a fair bokeh/DOF test between these two cameras because you have to use different sized lenses, which have different DOF capabilties.

  • @mike24p So simply put 25mm becomes 50mm and f1.2 becomes f2.4 on a GH2. Correct?

  • @IsaacSloan no, he means DOF.

  • @mike24p Thanks for all the help. Now that I look back on all the obvious questions I asked a few months ago I feel sort of silly. Keep up the good work.

  • how's the shutter roll on the gh2?

  • @lthnnpwr just like the GH1.

  • great video as usual, and making comparisons is very useful! I hope you throw in a Nikon D7000 in the future.. :) thanks for sharing !

  • I think you have define what you mean by better. For what I have seen the gh2 resolve much more detail than the 5d. So your test with very shallow depth of fields evens the two, put some landscape with deep dof and we might have a better idea,

  • I think canon 5D can show depth more than Panasonic GH2.

  • @ArtSoulGroup Dont forget that its a 50mm so it will show more depth compared to a 25mm.

  • @denniscoenraad 25mm on the GH-2 (or any micro 4/3 camera) has an equivalent of 50mm on a 35mm camera (like the Canon 5D Mark II since it's a full frame camera).
