  • omg i never heard about pregnant women to consume that kind of stuff. when i waspregnant i never feel like eating those things. maybe because they are hungry and have nothing else to eat???

  • why they didn't drop her off home? smh snobs!

  • Poor sods of servants dishing up the picnic in the rain to woolly headed aesthetes.

  • Presumably they didn't actually make her eat real coal.

  • what was the punishment for women to get an abortion in 1920s British Empire

  • In many primitive cultures pregnant women consume clay and it's considered to be quite normal.

In the case of lead poisoning children will eat dirt. This was considered to be abnormal. It has recently been seen as instinctive, as animals with lead poisoning do the same. It's thought that the body instinctively knows that many poisons are absorbed by the clay in the gut.

I was taught that everyone eats a peck of dirt in their lifetime.

  • Thanks for upload!

  • dosen't the guy seeling pork look like May's pervious employer?!

  • Yeah, it's called Pica...you can crave things like charcoal, human hair, cigarette ashes... :P blah!

  • Human hair?? Really D:? Knew about the charcoal and ciggarette ashe, AND chalk xD

  • Some women eat dirt or clay when they are pregnant. It's even considered 'normal' in some cultures for pregnant women.

  • because of the iron and calcium... when you're pregnant the fetus absorbs yours so crave for more; dirt, clay even chalk contents a lot of those minerals and the body knows it... back in those days they didn't prescribed vitamines for pregnant women, most of the time they didn't even see a doctor before labour...

  • I have never heard of it, but maybe eating coal was thought of being a way to induce a miscarriage? makes more sense than her just craving coal!!

  • is the girl with the black hair that man's wife who is may's child's father

  • I'm not sure why, but pregnant women do sometimes crave non-food objects to eat. I have 3 kids and at the OB they always ask you question like do you crave anything like chalk, detergents, etc. Weird, huh?

  • I had no idea that eating coal is one of the signs of pregnancy. Interesting..

    thanks for the upload :)
