omg i never heard about pregnant women to consume that kind of stuff. when i waspregnant i never feel like eating those things. maybe because they are hungry and have nothing else to eat???
In many primitive cultures pregnant women consume clay and it's considered to be quite normal.
In the case of lead poisoning children will eat dirt. This was considered to be abnormal. It has recently been seen as instinctive, as animals with lead poisoning do the same. It's thought that the body instinctively knows that many poisons are absorbed by the clay in the gut.
I was taught that everyone eats a peck of dirt in their lifetime.
because of the iron and calcium... when you're pregnant the fetus absorbs yours so crave for more; dirt, clay even chalk contents a lot of those minerals and the body knows it... back in those days they didn't prescribed vitamines for pregnant women, most of the time they didn't even see a doctor before labour...
I'm not sure why, but pregnant women do sometimes crave non-food objects to eat. I have 3 kids and at the OB they always ask you question like do you crave anything like chalk, detergents, etc. Weird, huh?

Some women eat dirt or clay when they are pregnant. It's even considered 'normal' in some cultures for pregnant women.

I have never heard of it, but maybe eating coal was thought of being a way to induce a miscarriage? makes more sense than her just craving coal!!
