I introduced this to two people that never met each other, but both said that this amazing piece of music was "the scarest thing they had ever heard in their lives"
I first heard this about six years ago, i was a fan of indie and pop music, needless to say this had quite an affect on me, years were spent looking for something with a similar mood or intensity, i have concluded that this is the only piece of its kind but without it i may never have fallen in love with classical music, the debt i owe walker is unbearable.
It is heart-stopping, it leaves me breathless....And this is probably the most accessible track on the album... Wonderful Anything else said would be pointless
It seems pointless to even try and make a meaningful comment about this astonishing piece of music. There are moments here that simply transcend mere words - the resolve into the major key at 5:19 is simultaneously ecstatic and heartbreaking, Walkers vocals almost cracking with despair like a sad Angel crying over the fate of Pasolini...it was the journey of a life.
@Rosstitutional It's fascinating to hear discussion of his compositions from a music theory perspective...I've often wondered if there are technical terms for his current stylistic explorations. However, now that I know roughly what a diminished third is, I can safely say it's one of my favourite elements of his music...The lack of resolution contributes to uneasiness, but also to a kind of openness in which the audience's mental reactions may constitute a silent form of completion...Like fluxus
I would agree with you that this track is one of Scott's best ever solo songs but it was not his last "conventional" song , that would have to be "only myself to blame" from the soundtrack of the Bond Movie "the world is not enough" in 1999, I heard the track for the first time on a long journey late at night on the radio and was so amazed to hear Scott singing like this again that I pulled over to listen! Scott is an enigma indeed.
Just thought I should let people know that Martin Tielli, on his haunting and amazing solo album We Didn't Even Know He Was the Poppy Salesman covers this song. It's a completely different take, but I imagine it would be of interest to a hardcore Scott Walker fan. good luck trying to find it!
This song reminded me of chanting so....imagine my surprise when I Googled Scott and found that he had spent time at Quarr Abbey studying Gregorian chant.
@Rosstitutional - if you want to hear recent Scotts voice on more conventional songs he also did vocals for several movie soundtracks in the 90's: "Only myself to blame"(which I think's gorgeous), "I threw it all away" (Bob Dylan cover produced by Nick Cave) and two songs with lyrics by Scott "Man from Reno" (with lyrics that would be reworked for "Farmer in the city") and "Indecent Sacrifice" - all of which can be found on youtube of course. Hope you like them if you havent heard them already.x
@SuperZielke I do indeed thanks! It's a great companion piece to this song actually. I first heard it on a dvd release of "Salo". Both songs of course are about Pier Paulo Pasolini. Thanks for the tip off anyway.x
@SusanSuntan no idea! it just seemed to suit. So many ppl post songs with tacky self promoting images and shit logos etc. The song demanded (and is strong enough) to speak for itself. As a rule you should always try to get the maximum effect from the minimum of input. Just stick the headphones on and drift away...(God you can tell I'm a Scott fan lol).x
@JorgeBarka I always imagine someone singing in a vast dark place that exists somewhere outside where we are. It may be in somebodys mind or someplace else I dont know. It's best to resist interpretation of Walkers songs and just go along for the ride...
@bumblebert I agree as well. Even his early stuff which was seemingly more clear, has layers of depth the 'pop star' Scott desperately worked into the songs. I can't wait for a new album, but we all know Scott's pace! It'll be worth the wait anyway.
as powerful as dido's lament in Purcell's Dido and Aneas. My dad used to play this constantly when i was younger, i appreciated it but i wondered why? why bring this dreadful intense music into the living room? i was fairly peaceful playing Crash Bandicoot on ps1.......
One of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. When it gets to the 'And i used to be a citizen...' part the hairs on my neck are all stood up. Never fails to move me. Went to watch the live performance of Scott's later work and this song blew me away. Think i nearly fell out of my seat i was tingling that much!
@nelfling This album was very perplexing at first, but its beauty reveals itself with further listening. It is now up there with Scott 4 among my favourite Scott albums.
This very song made me rediscover Scott Walker after nearly thirty years of silence. And what a rediscovery it has been since then. Impossibly, eerily beautiful.
Easily one of the bestest pieces or songs SW has ever written.... Only Guida voiced it so much better than I did... ;)
when you listen to this song on your 21st birthday, it scares you shitless
