Yes, Merle felt his fathers point of view needed to be told, and that is why he wrote the song, though he didn't really mean, or live the lyrics, just as Lynrd Skynrd wrote sweet home Alabama even though they were all Neil Young fans.
I read that this song was written in jest, but how funny that just as many most likely loved it for the message, taken literally, as those who enjoyed it in jest! A song that served everyone well, lol. And put Muskogie "on the map" of public consciousness.
Anyone from Muskogie out there who could comment on the effect this song had on your town in the 1960's ? Were you proud to have this song named after your town? I think that i would have been. Will always love Merle ! One of the very best.
Whenever my 92 yo gram and I go for a drive, I play this song and we both crack up. SO funny, but I love the words, literally, always did. Gram is a liberal, me very conservative, but we both enjoy it and laugh. We decided to call it "our" song.
I went off my route to go thru Muskogie, Okla, once, to see the town the song was named for, and see if there really was a Manley's Footwear.... etc. :) Thanks for such great memories, MERLE, we LOVE YOU !!!
i LOVE this song and i LOVE Meryl Haggad and although i like all kind of music COUNTRY will ALWAYS BE #1 FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grandpas favorite song RIP Grandpap

@TheManFromAcme: First, you obviously are not doing a very good job at ignoring the critics if you are taking the time to respond to my initial comment. Second, the proper way to express lack of concern or caring is to say "I could NOT care less" -- the exact opposite of what I think you intended to say. Third, my initial comment was in no way subliminal -- it was overt. In fact, the great majority of my comment was a direct quote from Mr. Haggard himself. By the way, I like the song too.
You might not know what you're talking about, RoyalKnobRecords. Mr. Haggard has been an avid pot smoker for the last 35 years. Some might consider that a hippie attribute. To quote a recent article: "Haggard always said the hoopla was overplayed, claiming he intended the song as a kind of jest. And, today, this country legend says that conservatives—especially the anti-marijuana forces—have gone too far. 'America has sure gone to some sort of a police state in the last 10 years,' says Haggard."
@lmcnellis I could care less what Haggard implies or what you think he implies, you and your kind that WANT to find the humor and "hidden" message in this song are full of shyt. Hippies are the feces of America and dishonor the good young men who REALLY care for this country. I like this song and what I am going to do is conciously ignore the subliminal message you, the critics, the media and Merle think it carries and take it for face value. The message in this song is still positive.
@duknud I think it;s tongue in cheek - as in ironic. ANd he does so with so much conviction he has his audience fooled into thinking he means it. Great song though...
This is for all the occupiers. My America is in this song. Your America is full of drugs, hate and has no hope.

Haggard has made it clear that the song was satirical. In recent years, he has become one of Nashville's biggest liberals.

@peeterpoon
I don't think it was satirical when he wrote it....he just got hip years later....
