I don't get some of the people here doc, just because the kid can't tolerate cleaning out decay doesn't mean we don't do it, because it gets worse, and there is no easy way. I saw another doc give nitrous oxide and all the people moaned about how we are drugging our kids and how it's wrong, and I suspect the people here would too. They don't realize how difficult this scenario is because they have never had a noncompliant pt., so I wouldn't waste your time with them. Keep up the good work!
@kotetsu131 - Well then why not CHANGE THE RULES and allow the child's PARENT to come back with them? No one could object to a parent holding down their own child for necessary Tx, right?
@LeshaAnn Actually that's what I do, if I place a patient in the papoose board, I want mom or dad to be there, it sometimes helps calm the patients down. These kids are stronger than you think and often mom or dad holding them down doesn't stabilize the kids enough to get the job done. Imagine trying to find a flea on a dog that won't stay still. It almost makes you dizzy.
I'm sorry people react negatively to this. It's better to have the decay treated than not. It may have been uncomfortable for the child, but my kid screams when I put her in her car seat. That doesn't mean I jeopardize her safety for a few minutes of restraint and discomfort. I'm sure the kid's mouth was numbed up first.
i'm sorry people think you're only in it for the money m8 when clearly you're not
its' just, with the media slamming every single public service out there every other day with scandals its' difficult to know who to trust
and most ppl take the easy way out of this by saying everyone in the world sucks
i try to see the best in ppl so i am gonna assume you were brave enough to do what needed to be done, and tried to get at least some rapport afterwards so he doesn't fully hate u
People talk like I'm having the time of my life strapping these kids down and driling their teeth. I don't enjoy it but something has to be done about the tooth decay. If you will comment negatively about what I did, and act like you have all the solutions and that you know better, please leave your name, number and address so that I can send the bill to you once the kind of treatment that you desire does not get paid. Then and only then, can you talk to me about dental phobia!
The people and dentists who comment negatively about what I did basically have no clue whatsoever on how to treat a patient that kicks and cries and just won't stay still... without druggin them! That's the problem with society today, every single problem has a pharmaceutical solution! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!
Dear Youtubers, this patient had multiple tooth decay that needed treatment ASAP. The child is uncooperative and so I referred to a specialist. For some reason & in this case, sedation was not covered, the parenst can't afford to pay $300-400 for sedation and begged me to do something. What does the world want me to do? What would you do? I discussed the options and they opted for the board. I provided the treatment. Sure he wasnt happy, but he's now decay free. He still comes for reg check up.
This is my final post. I don't think I can change the world while your still in it. I can't very much appreciate illogical thinking. Best of luck to you, but even more to your patients.
I am glad this is your final post but you are welcome to debate anytime. A little mesage to you... we come from 2 different worlds w 2 different resources, I provide what is best for the child and the parents with their consent. You can't shove your opinion down my throat because I work in the real world unlike yours. Not because you don't agree with me makes me wrong and finally, for heaven's sake STOP DRUGGING SWEDISH CHILDREN FOR YOUR OWN CONVENIENCE!!!!
Your rhetoric is unimpressive and you're obviously in denial. Would you sedate everyone if you could? All I'm saying is that money is never an issue, and a papoose board is never an option. Don't you then also realize that we are able to spend more time on our patients? Your narrow-minded pattern-of-thought limits you to irrational thinking. I know your country is known for its discrimination, so I guess SES discrimination comes with the package.
The reality of things where I come from may not coincide with your line of thinking because we have different approaches to treatment but it doesn't make it wrong. U R uick to judge cause U R provided everything and therefore money is not an issue, at least in your fairy tale world. What is unimpressive is your umbrella policy and that all things must come from a mold, otherwise it's doomed to be erroneous! Now that is narrow-minded! Discrimination has nothinig to do with benefits and services.
Hehe... Thanks for the offer, but there's still too much rampant S. mutans where I am now. Once I find a cure for that I'll come look you up. But, then again, I don't think I would feel comfortable performing treatments I don't consider ethical. In other words: I don't envy you. Unfortunately I can not solve your problem for you. Sweden lacks dentists. Come work here instead.
Mwahahahahahahaaa!!! Now that's funny! You are from a Fairy Tale land! Look, uni-directional, non-out of the box, saga tandläkaren usually discover or invent nothing so I wouldn't be very optimistic. Ethical is providing needed treatment approved by parents, unethical is judging people you don't know and letting decay progress. In conclusion therefore: Don't expect me for dinner, because I work in the real world, not where every uncooperative, unmanageable child needing work is sedated! Awful!
If you don't mind, I have to work on kids who don't open when you ask them to, kids who move their head left & right when you tell them not, kids who will bite your pinky off when they get a chance, kids who won't get on the chair, kids whose parents have no money for sedation and kids who absolutely won't cooperate under any circumstance but needs an E-milf and F-milf. We don't drug our kids too much here for our own convenience. What's the name of your office? The Trolls Center for Sedation?
I believe you are contradicting yourself. You do agree that welfare coverage forces you to use this technique. Then it isn't the child's treatment needs. Don't you think a psyche can be damaged? In Sweden ALL dental care is paid for by the government until the age of 20. Thus, financial background doesn't get taken into account when choosing treatment, even in low SES-areas. Rosengårdsstudien. Look into it. As a tax-payer I gladly pay for better treatment for children.
Listen, what I'm saying is that sedation is not a covered benefit but is offered to the parents. If they want to pay for it, good, if not then I'll try to help them. It's the decision of the parents. The risks, benefits and alternatives are always given to the parents. What you want to do is shove your Fairy Tale system into our system. This is real world treatment. The parents were happy that I have provided treatment and that they didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. Bobo ka pala eh.
Why don't you get off that mushroom you're sitting on from your Fairy Tale world and come here and do the treatment for these patients who have 2-3 cavities but won't open their mouths for treatment. Parents won't pay $300-$400 for sedation and get only 2-3 cavities filled because that money is part of the monthly rent for their apartments. In the US, there are limitations to coverages and that's a fact of life. Another thing is that some parents even after discussion insists on no sedation
I don't think a child's financial background should decide whether or not sedation is needed. The child's treatment needs should decide if sedation is needed. I believe a longitudinal study could show you how much damage you're actually causing. The risk of dental phobia and related problems is too great. I'm glad to be a dentist in the little fairy-tale land called Sweden. Brave controversial upload though :)
I'm not sure whether to thank you or not. When you are the one paying Spawlinho, "financial" is everything. It's easy for you to say things like that because you live in a "fairy-tale" land called Sweden where the massage is oh so good! In the meantime, frontline, real-life dentists like me work in impoverished areas need to provide treatment for these children with gross dental decay. Do you want to pay for my patients' sedation which the welfare program does not cover?
The real damage here is dental decay, gingivitis, dental abscess and baby bottle tooth decay, not the papoose board. The extent of the carious lesions and the behaviour of the child of course determines if sedation is needed. But the cost factor and welfare coverage is the reality of things. Didn't they teach that in Fairy Tale dental School?
The child's treatment should decide if sedation is needed? What about the child's behaviour and degree of cooperativity? You mean if it's an mod, no sedation? If it's a pulpotomy it's sedation regardless of behaviour? If there is real damage, I wouldn't be seeing this patients again with smiles on their faces, they get over it, you should to. Humans adapt very well. In fairy tale world they probably don't.
Papoose Boards are not illegal in US. Parents were given all options, this is what they chose, mom is assisting me all throuhout. I still see this patient every 6 months after treatment, no problems. Next time I'll send them to the specialist for sedation or gen anes and then send mormmote the bill, how's that? The parents would love you, the kid would love you. All you do is pay! What do you think? As a dentist I know some tricks work some of the time but not all tricks work all the time!
this is horrible!! i rememer being in one of these when i was like 5 i think and it was scarring!! im really claustrophobic now thanks to that.. couldnt you just give him some medicine that would help him relax?!? thats what they did to me when i was getting a tooth pulled out when i was 8!! gosh! poor little guy! no WONDER why hes crying! :[
Dear Chimchar817. I'm sorry that happened to you. My 1st choice is always to send them to a specialist who can sedate them. However, these people are on welfare and sedation is not covered. They can't afford to pay for it. In the meantime, the boy has a couple of cavities that are bothering him. I had to do something to help.
Its never easy to work on a crying and kicking patient, whether tied up or not. There's no easy way. The low fee that we receive from these welafre patients are never excellent motivations. So why do I do it? I just want to help them. Unfortunately a lot of internet idiots think I do it for the money. There's no money in welfare patients, only sacrifices.
hey, your 'excellent' and by the way bad dentistry is hurting kids, not my comments. ADA compliant restraint my foot!! You don't give a rat's behind about your patients, do you??? NO? That's what I thought.. CRUELTY IS WRONG,PEOPLE!! i'll send you a vid in my next comment.
Hi BermudaGreenSnot, Your foot? Your right foot belongs in your mouth, the left up your behind. Now go and watch your favorite movie... National lampoons. How can you send me a video? You can't even find your brain?
This comment by the way is from a guy who loves Ratatouille, R.V. and Nat'l Lampoons Christmas Vacation. If I go to jail for providing excellent dentistry, BermudaGreenNox should be gassed... and then hanged!
You heartless idiot, you! How dare you scar children for life. If you did that to my kid, i'd punch you in the face. You should go to jail for the rest of your life. This type of restraint is outright cruel and should be outlawed in America.
Parents can't afford to pay for sedation by specialist. Asked if I can do it. Patient is not cooperative, badly needs treatment. I offered this ADA accepted restraint and treatment was done successfully in the presence of parents. If I didn't, the patient would end up in pain or infection. That to me is cruel! Uninformed idiots like you should be the one punched. Unfortunately they don't put you in jail just because you're an idiot.
Like I said, some people accumulate plaque faster than others. There are predisposing factors like diet, thickness of the saliva and general oral microflora. I think your son misses the gumline, it's very common among young ones. make sure he brushes everyday and spends enough time with the toothbrush. Two to three minutes of good brushing with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste is usually recommended. Good luck.
Spending enough time with the brush & floss is the best way to minimize plaque. If plaque needs to be scraped from the teeth, that means it has accumulated to the point that you can see it. Remember, plaque is a bio-film, invisible to the eyes unless there's enough accumulation. It usually takes about 2-3 days for "undisturbed" plaque to build-up to the point that you can see it (brush failed to remove it). Plaque causes gingivitis and periodontal disease, take your son to the dentist regularly.
I have a concern my son has nice teeth they just seem to keep a yellow film on them all the time.He brushes on regular bases and rinse.Any thoughts on what can use to remove film very concerned.
The yellow film that you refer to is most probably plaque. It is actually a microbial film. No matter how hard a person brushes, if it's not done properly, time spent is not enough or if the toothbrush misses the areas where plaque accumulates (gum line especially), then you will see the sticky yellow film. Get a dental cleaning every 6 months, use a soft toothbrush and spend more time in the gum line. Some people form plaque faster than others. Hope this helps.
The fear this child has about the dentist is from the parents. The attitude and apprehension on the parents' faces all feed into the child's fear of the dentist. I love it when people use going to the dentist as a threat. That just makes my job 100% easier. NOT. I am still shocked when I see numerous cavities in a childs mouth and the parents' are all shocked when I tell them they're responsible for the poor oral hygiene of the child.
I don't know of any dentist who would not be willing to help you. You just need to find the right one and the first thing that you need to do is walk into a dental office. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be allright!
i'm extremly scared of the dentist. i had really bad experience with them and they hurt me. is there some way to overcome the fear of even getting close to the dentist?
First you have to find a dentist who understands what you feel (believe me not all do). What I did to my dental phobic patients is to ask them to come regularly when they get a chance... no treatmen! just chit-chat, show and tell for adults sort of. Just to get used to the place. They become immune later on and then one day they just sit on the chair, get the treatment done without drama. There's always some kind of discomfort & believe me dentists would do everything so you won't feel anything.
Be ashamed of myself? I have provided necessary treatment for a patient whose parents cannot afford the services of a specialist. Treatment was done successfully in the presence of the mother as seen and with consent in writing. The risks, benefits and alternatives were all disclosed. This patient has visited me several times already for his regular checks and cleaning after this procedure... with a big smile. Did I make a wrong move? Now, who is ignorant? I think you have deeper issues...
This is disgusting...if anyone ever did this to my child they would have to restrain me because I would totally loose it! I remember being held down in the hospital to be put under mask general anesthesia. I am 21 years old and I still cry hysterically and freak out before an operation. You are going to scar these children for life. How dare you hold children down like this. YOU ARE AN IGNORANT JERK AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!
If you don't want to use medications or a papoose board to perform a needed treatment, find a dentist who would be patient enough to "reason" with a four year old child who already decided while in the waiting area that they don't want to open their mouth nor be in the dental chair. Good Luck!
"The use of a papoose board is widely accepted in dentistry." -- only in the phillipines, as far as i can see .. i've never seen such a thing in portugal =| it's a sad device ..
Talk to your dentist, try to be allowed into the treatment room, ask about the dentists' qualifications and experiences, when your child is sedated and placed on the board, make sure the position is proper for airway/breathing. If you have a couple extra hundred dollars and want to avoid the papoose board, then just go for sedation or pharmacological restraint.
Whenever I use a papoose board on my patients, the parent always signs a consent form allowing me to use it on their child and parents are asked to stay in the treatment room unless they don't want to.
I think the use of a straight jacket for child dental care is far too common! It's cruel and many dentists are using it instead of patiences! They are not designed for convenience, nor nonemergency care.
I appreciate your comment. The use of a papoose board is widely accepted in dentistry. I myself try not to use it as much. However, if the patient is really unmanageable and may cause harm to him/herself, if the parent consents to the use, can't afford sedation or any form of pharmaceutical restraint and that the patient only requires minimum treatment (hence won't spend a lot of time on the board), this is an invaluable tool.
It's doesn't take but seconds to cause trauma to a child that takes years to over come.If it's something minor that would not take long, then why not wait. I hear you saying that if the procedure is short and sweet, better tie up the child, get it done so u can move on to the next.
The APA say they are dangerous and are to be used as a LAST RESORT, not 4 convenience of dentist.
I didn't say tie the child, get it done and move to the next. YOU DID! What I'm saying is that if it's a cavity that needs to be restored and the parent can't afford other means and consents to the procedure, why not get the treatment done in the presence of the mother?
What I hear you saying is to let the INFECTION stay and fester because you want to prevent psychological trauma to a child in need of treatment. Have you experienced pain from a tooth decay that was neglected? that's something you remember for your lifetime!
I put patients on the board not for my own convenience but for the child not to get injured. The board is dangerous in the wrong hands, without proper monitoring and in use with medication. Please get your facts straight.
Oh it's painful to see a baby as the patient.
I hope everything will be fine there.

Unfortunately Platinum, as much as we sure hope it would work, nitrous doesn't really do a good job sedating the child just by itself.

Good luck.
delapena88 3 years ago
Thanks delapena. We have been doing that is there any over the counter tool i could use to scrap the film I would be gentle!!
cymbol123 3 years ago
Spending enough time with the brush & floss is the best way to minimize plaque. If plaque needs to be scraped from the teeth, that means it has accumulated to the point that you can see it. Remember, plaque is a bio-film, invisible to the eyes unless there's enough accumulation. It usually takes about 2-3 days for "undisturbed" plaque to build-up to the point that you can see it (brush failed to remove it). Plaque causes gingivitis and periodontal disease, take your son to the dentist regularly.

I have a concern my son has nice teeth they just seem to keep a yellow film on them all the time.He brushes on regular bases and rinse.Any thoughts on what can use to remove film very concerned.
cymbol123 3 years ago

NOT. I am still shocked when I see numerous cavities in a childs mouth and the parents' are all shocked when I tell them they're responsible for the poor oral hygiene of the child.

thanks! do you think a dentist here would be willing to help me? sounds like something i would like to try down here
masterrotc 3 years ago
I don't know of any dentist who would not be willing to help you. You just need to find the right one and the first thing that you need to do is walk into a dental office. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be allright!

i'm extremly scared of the dentist. i had really bad experience with them and they hurt me. is there some way to overcome the fear of even getting close to the dentist?
masterrotc 3 years ago
First you have to find a dentist who understands what you feel (believe me not all do). What I did to my dental phobic patients is to ask them to come regularly when they get a chance... no treatmen! just chit-chat, show and tell for adults sort of. Just to get used to the place. They become immune later on and then one day they just sit on the chair, get the treatment done without drama. There's always some kind of discomfort & believe me dentists would do everything so you won't feel anything.

were do you practice in the us?

Be ashamed of myself? I have provided necessary treatment for a patient whose parents cannot afford the services of a specialist. Treatment was done successfully in the presence of the mother as seen and with consent in writing. The risks, benefits and alternatives were all disclosed. This patient has visited me several times already for his regular checks and cleaning after this procedure... with a big smile. Did I make a wrong move? Now, who is ignorant? I think you have deeper issues...
delapena88 3 years ago

Good Luck!
delapena88 4 years ago
"The use of a papoose board is widely accepted in dentistry." -- only in the phillipines, as far as i can see .. i've never seen such a thing in portugal =| it's a sad device ..
gaves 4 years ago
I practice dentistry in the US. In fact I don't know of any dentist in the Philippines who uses it. What you see is wrong. That is sad.
delapena88 4 years ago
Talk to your dentist, try to be allowed into the treatment room, ask about the dentists' qualifications and experiences, when your child is sedated and placed on the board, make sure the position is proper for airway/breathing. If you have a couple extra hundred dollars and want to avoid the papoose board, then just go for sedation or pharmacological restraint.
delapena88 4 years ago
Whenever I use a papoose board on my patients, the parent always signs a consent form allowing me to use it on their child and parents are asked to stay in the treatment room unless they don't want to.
delapena88 4 years ago
I think the use of a straight jacket for child dental care is far too common! It's cruel and many dentists are using it instead of patiences! They are not designed for convenience, nor nonemergency care.
DebHgn 4 years ago
I appreciate your comment. The use of a papoose board is widely accepted in dentistry. I myself try not to use it as much. However, if the patient is really unmanageable and may cause harm to him/herself, if the parent consents to the use, can't afford sedation or any form of pharmaceutical restraint and that the patient only requires minimum treatment (hence won't spend a lot of time on the board), this is an invaluable tool.
delapena88 4 years ago
It's doesn't take but seconds to cause trauma to a child that takes years to over come.If it's something minor that would not take long, then why not wait. I hear you saying that if the procedure is short and sweet, better tie up the child, get it done so u can move on to the next.
The APA say they are dangerous and are to be used as a LAST RESORT, not 4 convenience of dentist.
I respectfully disagree with you.
DebHgn 4 years ago
I didn't say tie the child, get it done and move to the next. YOU DID! What I'm saying is that if it's a cavity that needs to be restored and the parent can't afford other means and consents to the procedure, why not get the treatment done in the presence of the mother?
delapena88 4 years ago
What I hear you saying is to let the INFECTION stay and fester because you want to prevent psychological trauma to a child in need of treatment. Have you experienced pain from a tooth decay that was neglected? that's something you remember for your lifetime!
delapena88 4 years ago
I put patients on the board not for my own convenience but for the child not to get injured. The board is dangerous in the wrong hands, without proper monitoring and in use with medication. Please get your facts straight.

I became a dentist because I wanted to be a doctor but not to be responsible in a life and death situation.
