  • wow

  • they are playing to old people. enough said.

  • I wish they still did the sunset parade at the Iwo Jima monument that was always a fantastic place to see their performance

  • I found great irony in Indianapolis at the finals last year (2010) that this group played a large selection of music from the rock musical "Hair". Marines playing tunes from a 1960's anti-war, anti-establishment play. Groovy......

  • They are very talented. What a shame they didn't play real music until the very end of the video. I would have loved to hear some more music that you can follow, not this new nonsensical junk. I have been hearing this stuff at football games and it is awful. It isn't music, it's just a bunch of chords that you can't get into because it has no direction. You can't tap your feet to it because it isn't going anywhere. As a former marching band member, I can't imagine it is very much fun to play.

  • @KMW52 Time out. So Georges Bizet's Carmen isnt "real" music? So only Sousa type marches count as real music? The drum feature was written by one of the Marines in the group. So he can't write real music? I respect your view. But let us agree to disagree. I've played charts from Sousa to Mangione and it's all been fun to play. I just don't agree with your viewpoint.

  • @EJL88 It's music you just can't follow because it has no real direction to it. I've been to several college & pro games when this type of music is played and people became very disinterested. I realize some wouldn't care what was played, but I've noticed a lot more interest when the music is something you can follow (Sousa is a good example by you). If this is from Carmen, I must have missed it. I wasn't commenting on the drums, just the musical portion in the first part of the video.

  • @KMW52 Yes, the first part is Carmen. Cool, I follow you now. Some groups have gone towards music that just isn't interesting. Groups in DCI come to mind. Cool having a dialog about this. Some people on here get mad when you disagree with their viewpoint. Thanks.

  • @EJL88 Don't worry, I will not get mad if we don't agree. I'm glad you were able to figure out what I meant because I was having a hard time putting it into words.

  • @KMW52 Perhaps you can only follow the music's direction, when it's leading you around like the sound of the ice cream truck.

  • @KMW52 maybe your marching band just sucked?

  • @TheBetterGuy999 I would hardly compare my high school band to the Marines! I'm not saying they cannot play. They have great talent. I am saying I hate the type of music they opened with because it is basically unrecognizable as music. Just a lot of different, disjointed notes that you cannot follow along with. I'm sure the majority of the crowd liked the end music far more than the beginning. Also, I am not talking about the drum cadence, only the opening jumble of notes. The drums were great.

  • @KMW52 I am a former member of The Comandant's Own and I am also one of the old fart DCI alumni (LOL) so I agree with what you are saying but it doesn't really apply here. This video picks up halfway through the show during the drum solo. It sounds kind of strange because our entire "Pit" consist of only two bells players. You sort of went off on a tangent (ha ha), a valid point, just doesn't apply to us.

  • @dcraig1865 I only had so much video time on my camera. Plus I wanted to get shots of the whole presentation. Who Take care and thanks for serving our country!

  • @EJL88 I have been out for a while so I don't know what the first two numbers played were and I couldn't find any video for the beginning of the show for 2007. I really did look before I commented. There have been a lot of changes since I got out. So, if they really did play some wack shit that year, umm nevermind. LOL

  • @KMW52 wow get over yourself and actually enjoy music that is obviously beyond any sort of talent you could ever dream of having

  • @TimmyJ17 Tim, I did enjoy the last part where they were actually played music! The 1st part consists of talented noise. It isn't music at all, but just a jumble of sound. You can't sing it or hum it because it is just a jumble of notes. I never said these Marines aren't talented, I said I prefer to hear them play true music, as they do at the end. Listen to the crowd. When they finished the jumbled mess, they received polite applause. When they finished real music, the applause was much greater

  • @KMW52 man the stuff now days has more rithom than what was back then man it was boring its great now

  • @maverck95 Whatever. If it makes you happy, then good for you. :) It's still a rhythm you cannot follow or even tap your toes to. It goes nowhere.

  • how about that bass split at 0:11 !!

  • @zcobryant You know, I never really noticed until you mentioned it. Nice lick from the bass line! My excuse, I'm a tuba player! LOL!

  • @drumrboy112891 All members of the President's Own are Marines. All their uniforms have EGA's on them. The major difference is rather than having cross rifles above the rockers they have lyres. All members of the Marine Band have to adhere to the UCMJ, maintain height and weight standards, and, other than the combat training, learn the same information taught in recruit training. Some members of the band need to learn marching, it's not an elective at several of the schools they attend.

  • GREAT video! I'm Cpl Ken Jones, USMC. I served in the Marine Corps Band from 1959 to 1965. I always enjoy seeing the band, or D&B, and especially when I'm in Washington. Thanks for posting.

  • @skymaster336 Thanks Cpl Jones. Two great things brought together; The Marines and Drum Corps! Thanks for your service also!

  • I like the stick height visual on the snare line

  • I think it would be cool if these guys would compete in DCI for a season.

  • I hate to burst your bubble SunSop but I was a Marine bandsman. I was in neither the Commandant's Own nor the President's Own. However, I did go to Marine boot camp and I did become fully qualified on the rifle. In fact I had the honor and privledge of serving with many fine men and women in other Marine bands across the country who served time in Iraq. So please before you go throwing out phrases like "true Marines", get your facts straight.

  • must be quite a transformation to turn from a human into a snare drum

  • Some years ago , the U.S. Air Force had two enlisted drum and bugle corps : the DC corps and the AF Academy corps . However , since the Air Force has never understood the importance of

fine marching units , bothe the DC corps and the AF Academy corps were disbanded !

  • The AF Academy Corps still exists, however it has been turned over to the cadets, who keep up the tradition, but obviously with it not being their full time job, the quality has diminished...

  • Yes - the Air Force Academy Enlisted Corps was

disbanded in 1973 . The present AFA Cadet corps

has only one civialian instructor - Wm . Smith - who does the best he can ; but as you noted the quality of the corps has diminished - GREATLY !

  • wat's the difference between the Commandant's Own and the President's Own?

  • The President and the Commandant are two different people. The President is of course the President of the U.S. Whereas the Commandant is the highest ranking officer in the USMC.

  • @jck1794 and also the Presidents own are not all Marines. Some are but the uniforms do not have eagle globe and anchors everywhere.

  • so they can tach you how to be a killer and a drummer! sign me up!!!

  • It may come in hand some day. Death by drumstick or rifle, depends on what they have on hand! LOL

  • @EJL88 thats funny shit.

  • those tenors are SWEET

  • The Royal Marine Band (or combined bands when all come together) are excellent. But they don't come close to the "Commandant's Own" in terms of musical execution and drill. Many of the RM read their music on lyres while marching. The USMC D&B Corps members memorize their entire repertoire for a;ll their shows. The Royal and US Marines produce two differnet styles of programs - both do so outstandingly!

  • Impressive......Has anybody seen the Royal Marines band displays?

  • Yes, and the RM are immeasurably(sp) better.

  • lol the short guy was center snare at my school in 05

  • I said the same thing. Now all I can dream about is the day I turn 18 and go sign up. Lol

  • A real drum and bugle corps. :)

  • @tokiri like the one that accompanied custer before Crazy Horse scalped his sorry ass...Nothin more intelligent than announcing your arrival????Go figure you redneck fuck

  • Well then your best bet since you don't want to go into the military, as much as I would love to see more of my peers doing. I would then suggest looking into DCI or DCA. Both circuits have great groups that you can perform with. If you have any other questions just private messae me that way we don't keep clogging up this video.

  • is it hard to be on the drumline?

  • Probably no harder than any top Div I, oops I mean World Class, drumline. The only catch is you have to be a Marine and all that goes with that title and honor.

  • it's a lot harder to get into the Commandant's own. and dont forget...basic. and with the Marines, there are NO mistakes...ever...where as they will probably go eaier on you in DCI/DCA

  • I auditioned for the Marines screwed up a couple times and still got in. Granted I eventually chose the Army over the Marines, but mistakes can be made and you can still get in. I did mention the fact you have to be a Marine to get in, so your comment about basic, its boot camp for the Marines, was pointless. Having marched in a DCI and DCA corps, they don't go any easier on you than services. Having auditioned for the services making them all and marching DCI and DCA,I think I would know.

  • This great group will be at DCI Finals! Per their website. I got my TIX hope to see all the drum corps nuts there!

  • check the website?

  • Yeah, I think you may be right. Check the site. Seeing as the info may have changed since the last time it was printed on the CD that I have.

  • nice book and drill, who writes it

  • Hey what's up guys, my name is SGT Matthew Cole. I'm a snare drummer in "The Commanadant's Own" The first piece in the video is an original arrangement of "Gypsy Dance" from the opera Carmen. I arranged the battery parts and Sgt Steve Duncan wrote the mallet parts. If you search for West Coast Tour 2007, you can see more of the dumline in action... Hope this helps!

  • nice you write very well, do you have any marching expirience outside of the Marine Corps, did you march DCI or DCA

  • I've talked to the guy and there are lots of guys in the Commandant's Own who marched DCI.

  • Thanks for the info. I hope I did you all justice. I'm a big fan of the Drum Corps and The USMC. My wife is a Corpsman so I'm used to hanging out w/ Marines! Have a great performance @ DCI Finals!

  • @730Studios Did you know Sgt Scott Rogers? He's my son. He's been out of the Bugle corp for 2 or 3 years now.
