I was born in Australia but have a Turkish background and one day we heard the start of this song , and naturally, thought it was on Turkish TV... We were so shocked as we heard the english lyrics and realised that Aussie TV was on.... hahah but felt very proud <3
these guys were a bit quiet for a while there and then they made 3 albums in the last 4 year...fantastic...soooooooo sick of hearing lady gaga on the radio
just two days ago i saw these guys live and it was deffinitly one of the best performances i have ever seen it deffinitly was one of the best thing to happen to this island ( i live on an island called kangaroo island in south australia) so much fun and this song expecialy went off !
@abortzee wow man, the turks didn't "fuckin murder" us. it was war, it was pretty much even sided, but if u look for some accurate accounts of casualties from gallipoli, there were so many more turkish soldier killed than australian soldiers. It only looks like we got the short straw because the poms didnt know how to drive boats and landed the boats kilometers from where they originally planned to
@abortzee This song has nothing to do with Gallipoli, Kavyen Temperley aka Finlay Beaton wrote the song about Heath Ledger's death. They were both in New York when Heath died and are both from Perth, Western Australia. The use of the Zurna in this song, whilst Turkish, is just a new direction the band were taking at the time and nothing to do with war.
Im pretty sure this had something to do with Heath Ledgers death? Eskimo joe was in the same city as him when he died and they wrote this song.. or am i making things up? :/
i love this track.... i'm not sure what it means though? Are they talking about making it big in the foreign land but not at home?... or is it about how much they miss home?
@Kittielove30 no it's about Eskimo Joe doing a gig in New york on the night Heath Ledger died, they felt an immense loneliness and sadness being in a "foreign land" whilst a fellow australian died in the same town the guys from Eskimo Joe are from.
I've had to move over to the US from Aus for a few years and havn't been able to come home. This song just reminds me everyday how much I miss our beer, our rugby and our beaches. We really are the lucky country.
Okay, I admit, this song seriously got on my nerves the first time I heard it. It was so weird. But after listening to it again, listening to every instrument, I fell in love with it. Seriously, it is one of the best songs I have ever heard. It is so unique from all the stuff that people listen to today. That is why its so amazing. :]
Its not arabic. The way they dance sure is turkish dancing but the The flue they play is originated from assyrians and we call it "zorna" we also use it for our weddings and occasions. Search "dola o zorna" in the engine and ull see assyrians come up and look at the videos.
I reckon the way this band uses it with modern music makes it really good.
i love this song sooo much... its just so much different from all the other songs and has more of a sense of other countries AND FOR ALL YOU DUMBASSES THIS IS TURKISH DANCING!!!!!
Whirling Dervishes have been in Turkish culture for many, many centuries, and the instrument at the beginning is the Turkish Zurna, it has been played in Turkish music since the beginning :)
I lived 5 years in Australia, and many times I felt like him(Heath Ledger)... It's not just about being an Australian... It's about how you feel when it's not your home country, your people, your family. " This was what it feels the love that I couldn't feel when I was in a foreign land" (Australia).
They are a pretty incredible band. The riff is possibly influenced by Led Zep's "Kashmir", (or possibly not - this is only my opinion) but interpreted a different way, and it sounds just awesome.
