Trumbo was opposed to US involvement in WW2 when Poland was invaded by Germany and the USSR because Stalin was allied with Hitler. Trumbo wrote the anti-war book "Johnny Got His Gun". When the USSR was invaded by Hitler Trumbo became pro-war and anti-war activists who requested copies of his book were reported to the FBI by Trumbo.

I wonder if Trumbo reported Ray to the FBI for investigation. Trumbo was the first to name names and be an informer; not for the USA but for Stalin.

The letter brought me to tears, and another reason for this could be Joan Allens wonderful performance here. A really sad part, but wonderful done.
