  • The whole show was mimed, everyone. I was in the torrent path choir who sat right above her and all the performers, for the whole show ( it was amazing, one of the best times of my life) We were mimed and there was 400 of us actually singing, I have no doubt Vanessa was singing her ass off though, but remember, it's all for tv at the end of the day and with an audience of 4 billion, it's gotta be PERFECT. Either way, the girl is amazing and still had to sing this in a studio regardless. Awesome

  • WOW! WOW! WOW!...THIS IS A WORLD-CLASS VOCAL PERFORMANCE!

  • go vanessa go

    amazing voice

  • AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hooooly shit!!! she's so fucking amazing

  • It has already been verified that this is indeed LIVE. Not everyone needs crap to sound good. VA is the real deal. She was actually sleeping in the hallway before she went on stage. That is how relaxed she was........so get it right people! It IS LIVE.

  • @BlueHeelerCairns I agree, I have the studio version of this song and there are bits of this one that are not in the studio version.

  • Un-fxxking-believable! One of the best vocal performances of our time. Easily! I'm simply blown away...

  • It certainly was playback but it wasn't her choice so no one could use that against Vanessa anyway. When you have billions of people watching from all over the world you have to make sure nothing goes wrong. You can't risk a microphone problem, feedback, interference or the many other problems that can happen during a live performance. So the Olympic production committee insists that all songs are recorded in advance. But she did sing that at one point to record it. It's no big deal.

  • She's definitely singing live!!!.And her voice, for God's sake is just amazing and unbelievable!!!.I'm taking for granted the very Whitney Houston must have been crying out when she's seen a white singer singing WAY BETTER than her.Poor Whitney: she envies Vanessa!!!.

  • @OnlineBaja There is no foldback, she cannot hear the music and she is not wearing in ears. I know sound techs who have worked with Tina Arena and Vanessa Amorosi and when they sing in concert, they sing with in ears. And on top of that I have just laid this recording on top of the original studio recording and they are exactly the same. And if you don't believe that, then your as dumb as I think you are... You have no idea about sound design and sound acoustics and that they never sing live.

  • @OnlineBaja I believe someone already has btw.

    smh.com.au/news/music/sydney-olympics-faked-opening-too/2008/08/26/1219516425771.html

  • @OnlineBaja What are you on about? Are you trying to say that I should go on the news and say its not sung live? Sure I could go on TV and say its not live, but no one cares. We have lip synced things like that cause its impossible to get a good quality sounding live in a stadium. The only reason people would be mildly interested was if they sung live and sounded horrible. Everyone in the entertainment industry knows ceremonies are lip synced.

  • @OnlineBaja Thats very polite. Every ceremony David Atkins does, does not let the singers sing live. Here is a video of Tina Arena singing LIVE to a backing track.

    youtube.com/watch?v=v8ZalOdtsDs

Here is the actual ceremony performance.

    youtube.com/watch?v=YkQDoeyhIpc

    Here is the studio recording.

    youtube.com/watch?v=K9I-nhHyjgU

The studio and ceremony performance? They are exactly the same. Every breath, every riff. I would love to meet an artist so consistent.

  • @murdoch1818 Not to mention the studio recording duration goes for the exact same duration of a live orchestra playing it... Again, musicals done 8 shows a week, there songs are never exactly the same duration as the night before.

  • Who cares I'm 62 and I think she's the best singer I've ever heard, her range is unbelievable!!!

  • I work in the entertainment industry and know people who stage managed this and many other opening ceremonies. They are all lip sync'd. The producers don't let them sing live because they want the sound to be perfect quality for television and it is impossible to sing in a stadium when you sing a line and it comes back 2 seconds later... It's hard enough for Rock Bands to play in Arenas let alone a 60 piece orchestra.

  • vanessa amorosi had a great and unbelievable voice ever....so nice ... i love it....

  • Celine WHO???

  • she is UTTERLY AMAZING...

  • Was at NY BAR & GRILL in Adelaide when this came on and the place just stopped DEAD !!!!!

  • for some reason, Vanessa Amorosi reminds me of Erika from Being Erkia

  • Vanessa rocks.

  • holy crap, i was here :) :) i was 10!!!! Won 2 tickets through school, so me and my mum went!! still remember it!!

  • looks live to me! Maybe to many people watching milli vanilli!!!!

  • No matter if its recorded or life Vanessa is absolutely perfect pitch every-time

    ..

  • @2MyTubes you mean 'recorded or LIVE?'

  • big song, nice voice

  • Who were the 2 dumb asses that didn't liked this? How can that be possible? Did you clicked the wrong button?

  • :O :O :O :O I'm very...huh...I don't have words to say about her, about this music, about this performance...Oh My God!!!

  • It's a really great song. What a voice. I can only imagine the energy hearing this live.

  • it is almost impossible for all singers to sing live in the olympic opening ceremony because olympic committees usually don't allow them to do so to prevent any flaws. but vanessa can really sing, they trusted her. i think she's the one who sing effortlessly so far surpassed bjork lipsynced performance in 2004 olympic opening ceremony.

  • A fantastic song ..... I am amazed by Vanessas excellent voice ..... she is indeed indescribable !!!! Thank you so much for sharing this great uploud ! Lovely greetings from Germany, Lailah

  • 1111*

  • whoever disliked this song, should go shoot themselves

  • wow ! ididnt know that this girl can sing this kind of song ..

i just mean that she is versatile .. ^_~

  • Cette chanson est magnifique !!!! Elle m'a vraiment marquer depuis 2000 , l'une des meilleures chansons des années 2000 !!!! Vanessa you have a beautiful voice , and for me it's one of the best performance in the decade 2000's !!!!

  • The song is amazing. Also, pulling that tarp, must be heavy!

  • Absolutely amazing! First time I had actually heard this! What an incredible talent this woman is! Go for gold Ness!

  • she has the best vocal on this planet

  • This IS live and Vanessa was 15 or 16 yeaqrs old in this clip. She brings ME to my knees. Live is how we do it here thanks.

  • @bibi5767 she was 19

  • @GrimsonGhost Yeah, thanks :) It`s another young female who is now in England that I`m thinking of. She would be probably 18 now, time flies.

  • that was a splendid performance.......breath taking!!!! go Nessy!!!!!

  • Just applied for London 2012 opening ceromony tickets....I really hope we get them :-)

  • I don't care if this was live or not, having seen this woman sing live I can tell you that her voice is incredible, her vocal range is unbelievable and those high notes are so pure you will think your brain is vibrating.... she is off the radar. Well done Nessy!

  • I love this performance. It makes me cry everytime I don't know why. She is such an amazing singer. I went to the Olympic staduim last time I went to Sydney it was a lot smaller then it looked on the telly!

I loved the Sydney opening ceromony it was the best. I just hope London does us proud next year. I can't wait

  • AMAZING!!!

  • Me recuerdo muy bien de esa interpretacion!!

  • Its live you deadset fucking fools. Typical bad ass women jealous its live FFS

  • i still love this song. still remember how amazing that moment is.

  • essa musica e bastante linda... vem aquí pro brasil

  • how the hell? gosh. she is. freaking. amazing.

  • 2 are whitney houston fans haha!

  • Sorry go to swear. FUCKKKKKKKK Thats our Vanessa. Australia's most amazing femamle singer. The last note Again. FUCKKKKKKKKKKKK

  • I would kill for that voice. Seriously!

  • Who is that swimmer??

  • @dasoulbird Keiren Perkins,Australian Swimmer

  • Whitney Houston couldn't have done it better at all.Instead she would have made a real fool of herself, cause no matter how hard Whitney could try she'll always be a loser with such a limited voice and very few vocal ressources. Here's the living proof of WHITES BETTER THAN BLACKS: VANESSA AMOROSI!!!.

  • @nickyaguilera I don't like Whitney and I am a Vanessa fan but that comment was horrible,Just wrong...

  • @nickyaguilera Um whitney back in he prime was one of the greatest and most powerful singers ever and her being black has nothing to do with it. Vanessa's talent has nothing to do with being black its their talent and not color. I doubt they look at their color first and think about that and thats why their talented. And whitney was FAR from being vocally limited. Uneccesary comment, and this is coming from a WHITE guy...........

  • @nickyaguilera

Lmao at you're Last name. Talk about Limited singer xD

  • @ X39988 did you complete the opening ceremonies? maybe you can upload them ... on youtube there is no time limit anymore. thank you.

  • Simply AMAZING

  • a-MAZE-balls as always! those notes would scare mariah and whitney away! GZUZ take the WHEEL!!!!

  • this is the absolute art of music

  • this is great!

    my favorite performance of Vanessa!

  • If you wanna download this mp3 just go to audioripit doht cohm.

  • I've always been a fan of Vanessa and when I heard that she was performing at the Olympic games and I was there I just cried with pride I knew then that the world see what we in Australia knew she could do. You have to admit her range is amazing, and the fact that she is such a powerhouse shows why the olympic committee chose her to perform although I love Tina Arena and the old folks Olivier and John they still have aswell but on this night vanessa did us proud.

  • Watch Mariah Carey's "Anytime You Need a Friend" and Vanessa has the same look! i love this song!!!

  • Guys, you really should see this Youtube clip

    Vanessa Amorosi - AFI Awards

  • have you guys noticed that nobody else have attempted singing this song? You go Vanessa. You're the only one!

  • I have watched this clip 20 times. Dam its good.

If this gives you goose bumps, watch Kylie singing I still call Australia home.

  • Also Vanessa was still at School when she did the Olympics.

  • Anybody that has been to one of her live shows knows what a fantastic voice she has.

  • amazing voice!! How could she do that!?

  • She is the voice!!!!!!!!!

  • All performances were lip synced. The reason being it is impossible to sing in an arena environment especially with an orchestra accompanying you. Just to remember though even though they didn't sing it live, it still meant they still actually sung it at one point. Vanessa is great live but due to it being viewed by 4 billion people around the world, they don't let artists sing live at events like this.

Btw... everytime I see this moving idea for a song with the projections makes me cry.

  • @murdoch1818 lol finally someone that realizes this is lip synced. I wanna hear a REAL live performance. It's a briliiant song though. It's like. . .TOO MUCH. hahaha

  • @Ruthlyn , I have seen lots of interviews with her about this song, and not one has it ever even been suggested that this was not a live performance.

As a matter of fact I have never actually seen her mime anything. She doesnt have too.

  • @whipthedog WRONG. you saw her lipsync here. It is still an amazing performance but yes it's lipsynced. It is word for word, breath for breath with the recording that i've listened to a million times. She's a fantastic singer. . .and no one admits to lipsyncing. Michael Jackson lipsynced Billie Jean when he performed it at the motown awards, but no one mentioned it because that was when he introduced the moonwalk.

  • @Ruthlyn You are spot on, plus she's holding the mic to block her mouth. But it's ok she still sang it and belted it out on the recording I give her props for acting out the high notes :)

  • @Guardian435 she was probably actually singing on stage but her mic was turned off. . .and she wasn't singing full voice. that's why the camera didn't show her much.

  • @Ruthlyn mmm Good Call.

  • @murdoch1818 Yeah I used to be a part of the Australian Girls Choir and we always had to perform at Socceroos matches or football games and we still had to sing, but we had to kind of lip sync with a backing track of us singing because it's impossible singing in a stadium.

  • @jellyiseatingjelly Impossible to sing in a stadium? Really? So when Pink Floyd, The Stones, U2 and other EPIC bands play HUGE stadiums they are lip syncing too? Hardly! I too was in the busines for decades. I'm now a retired recording engineer. Started out doing live sound for quite a few major bands back in the early 80's and they ALL sing live. Ever hear of a cue send, (or foldback) & ear monitors? She can clearly hear the band and could easily be singing live like singers do at any concert.

  • @murdoch1818 Thank you for that explanation. Vanessa is awesome!!

For those who dis the lipsyncing. Just because it's a recording we are hearing, doesn't mean she's not giving it her all...maybe the mic is turned off :P yet she's singing for real...how would u know. lol

  • Can you believe this wasn't released as a single? WTF

Biggest mistake in your career V

  • Comment removed

  • GOLD VOCALS.

  • How is it possible that someone could sing that good?... *sniffle*

  • this is AMAZING singing. AMAZING. She belts a-flats, then THAT finish?????????? Is there another female on the planet who could have done this? The case rests....

  • @enjolras76 I rest my case!! No argument here!.. Put our aussie Vanessa Amorossi up against Maria Carrie or Celein Dion any day..! Throw Farnham into the mix as well & we have the best!,,Rock on Australia.& thank you Enjolras 76..xo

  • @chrizzoclark

Vanessa Amorosi could destroy alot of people from America Actually, Celine is one of them

  • @WhitneyElizabethH Céline Dion is French-Canadian, not American....

  • @enjolras76 search regine velasquez

  • This is one of thew most amazing and poignant songs performed that night.

Even watching it now still reduces me to tears because of how moving the song was.

This song appropriate for the occasion.

  • 10 years ago today!! I can't believe it.

  • @joeyjojoshabadoo87 yep, saw this song on the news today and decided to watch it, 10 years to the day.

im going to download this. brilliant song!

  • I cant find the album with this song on it, anyone know where I can get it?

  • @remdog0110 I can send it to you via mail if you want, because it's not in any album!

  • @Pipkinize I'd be so grateful if you could send it to me! my email is: thestylist@optusnet.com.au

  • @remdog0110 I don't think its on any album,it's just at the olympics.

  • J'adore sa performance vocal , Bravo Vanessa !!! c'est une performance que je n'oublierai jamais.....!!

  • Great song. I was inspired to do an Oscar montage for it when I heard it. I never finished it, so there's blank parts in the beginning and the middle, but lemme know if you like it.

  • I fucking loved this when I saw it in 2000 but it´s even better now. That girl has some pipes.

  • this is just a dream games

  • indeed this is absolutely fantastic - thanks for uploading in such a good sound quality

  • what an amazing voice.... vanessa deserves a gold medal for that performance...

i cry every time i see that video . makes you proud to be aussie.....

  • Love her voice on THAT performance, but not her voice on other performances.

  • wonderful!!

  • 10 years on and I still get tears in my eyes.

I remember watching this in Martin Place and looking around at everyone wiping their cheeks.

I wasn't the only Aussie bursting with pride that night.

  • this was incredible! one of the greatest singers ever1 i wish mariah would perform at the olympics, that would be amazing!

  • the last phrase..."heroes live forever....", she just used one breath starting from 4:00 until 4:29. That was just amazing and astounding.

  • @willmarbrin The note start at 4:04 for me!

  • I was 4 during the games and i listened to this song every day on the way to school for the next 2 years!!! After almost a decade it still gives me goosebumpS!!!

  • Vanessa held that last note for over 20 seconds - and still had breath to notch it up a few octaves.

  • oh my god that was just amazing :O

  • When she come to Japan?

  • damn!! that girl can sing her ass off. wow! that was amazing!

  • Wow!

  • This is so beautiful..

  • enorme prestations ! je suis pas fan de ce genre de musique mais là, je reste sur le c...

A voir aussi "the flame" de Tina Arena.

  • The stadium's English-language announcer for the Opening Ceremony was Australian actor John Stanton

  • @hypegenie Thank you for the information, Vanessa is an Angel.

  • back in 2000, i watched the opening ceremony so many times just for this song.

  • From Spain with love, is the most wonderful and powerful voice I've ever heard ... Absolutely fantastic ...

  • Sydney 2000. Best Olympics Ever. THANK YOU VANESSA AMOROSI !!!!

  • All the performers at the Sydney Opening Ceremony were singing LIVE!!!

  • All these comments saying she was lip synching is a load of shit. I was there that night I was working @ the opening ceremony and it was live I can guarantee that. She one of thos singer who is completely under rated and "Has It" it is rare for a singer to come along like her and sing like she did. Look at Leona Lewis and Celine Dion the way they sing live is Amazing.

  • Live or not, I remember when she finished, everyone was just in sheer amazement at how incredibly spectacular this song was. They could not have picked a better singer and better event to unleash this work of art.

The end had such an amazing climax that gave everyone goosebumps, and no one can argue with that.

  • @kit1802 Just read ur comment.U sumed it up perfectly! Thats Australia! We have the best of everything & i love it so much..we have so much to be proud of here. Vanessa Amorossi,John Farnham. We've got the lot!..I'm so DAMN Proud of our Nation.Lets hold on to that! xo

  • @kit1802 too true. i highly doubt it was live... just because with these events they simply cannot leave any chances for even the slightest stuff up but nevertheless... that doesn't stop the performance from being soo magical as it was. it's the atmosphere.. the power and sheer energy! a-mazing!

  • This was lipsync.. you can tell.. this was different from the original track.. but she sang it 2 times.. one got fixed..one didn't.. this was the one that didn't got.

  • this isnt live, there are many technical risk in performing in a big venue especially in a live event like the olympics so its an accepted practice, that singers will lypsinc. this maybe precorded version of the song, that is different to the actual released track of the album

  • I want to lick her Vocal Chords.

    Just ridiculous.

  • bahahar strange- but i get it lol

  • By far one of the strongest vocal performances ever! No doubt.

  • @Sofus80 - agreed - I don't recall any performance with such power and range. This beautiful lady deserves worldwide attention but those of us who do know of her are the lucky ones.

  • @Timmisdad Yah! I absolutely agree..! Ive seen here when she was performing tiny litty venue's such as The Wool Shed at PICTON Nsw Australia & Dapto Leagues Club down at wollongong nsw.her first album. She is so Tiny! bout 5 foot. Such a BIG voice for such a little lady!

  • No way is this mimed. If you listen to the recording on the Sydney 2000 official soundtrack, the vibrato is different, and Vanessa tends to enunciate a little better, ie singing "world" instead of "werld" as she does here. She was singing live at the opening ceremony. Vanessa doesn't need to mime any more than Mariah Carey does. They both have a "one in ten-million" voice, pure and simple.

  • One of the greatest preformances ever!!!

  • Why olympic games songs are so emotive?! I just love them, they have something that make my skin react to high tones :)

  • Yes. Vanessa and Celine's Power of the Dream 1996 makes me gasp for air in a good way.

  • The highlight of the Olympics for me too. Thanks Vanessa!

  • This Vanessa sure beats another Vanessa we know in some Disney 'high school movie'.

This Vanessa has more character, tone and texture. Definitely more versatility.

  • Exactly... This Vanessa doesn't need three vocal tracks laid down to sound good!

  • I have watched this truly amazing performance from Vanessa many times. For me it was the highlight of the 2000 olympics. Her voice is one of the world best. For you dickheads overseas who think she is lip synicing. Listen to some of her live gigs and you will see her voice is amazing.

  • tonight i had the urge to see and hear this clip again .. the first time Ive watched it since that opening ceremony when she totally blew me away with this performance!

this was the stand out performance by a long shot and i think its even better than Whitney's "one moment in time" ... any other performer would be hard pressed to produce a more apt, inspiring & spine tingling tribute to our heroes!

P.S. and she looks almighty HOT at 2:10 ;o)

  • wow makes me feel proud

  • omg she holds that last note for like 25 seconds!! AMAZING!! love vanessa amorosi!! Her and Mariah Carey have the best two voices in the world!!! :D

  • Saw vanessa singing back up to Kate Ceberano on Vanessas first tour. Fantastic, no way is this lip synched. Reduces me to tears each time i see it as it did on the day. Love her

  • why would Vanessa be singing back up to Kate on Vanessa's own tour??????
