SICK. I can't believe the audience is laughing.. or maybe there is no audience and Shapiro added the laughter, either way SICK SICK SICK ! Imagine family and friends seeing this, how terribly tragic. This should be banned and I'm sorry I ever came across it.Shapiro, you're an idiot!
this is so fucking out of line. this guy has no taste. he does not know anything about phil's life and family. it's a fucked up true story, not a joke.
I love Phil Hartman. He's without a doubt the most talented SNL cast member in the show's history and one of my favorite comedians.
But seriously, people-- It happened twelve years ago! We're far beyond the need to get all butthurt when someone talks about the guy without kissing his ass.
For those of you complaining that it's tacky and inappropriate- you're absolutely right! It's SUPPOSED to be tasteless-- dark humor is pointless if it isn't offensive. That's why it's DARK!
This doesn't shit on the memory of Phil Hartman... it shits on the memory of BRYNN Hartman, who WAS a psychotic coke whore, and who MURDERED a man we all loved. Calling her "his troubled wife" is exactly the kind of misplaced compassion on which this piece shines a poignant spotlight. Phil couldn't come back from beyond the grave to tell us that himself, so this fan bravely did it on Phil's behalf, with a great imitation that was obviously loved by a hip Hollywood audience. Thank you and BRAVO.
Wtih no disrespect MrRee, but your "BRAVO" was a bit misguided. Whether the comic did or didn't try to undervalue Phils memory, he managed to do so in any case. I can't disagree with you more about that "BRAVO" because that comedy SUCKED. It might just be my bad sense of humour, but I cant find anything funny about: "Oooh, Lord. You took my own gun, popped me twice in the head and once in the chest. Call me irresponsible, but it..."
@Hamsori Bravo as in brave, for speaking such uncomfortable truths (i.e. Brynn Hartman was a mentally unstable cocaine addict serial killer) in a way that recalls what we all loved best about Phil's style. I guess the entire audience and I will just have to agree to disagree with you.
Of all the low rent bits I've seen, this is easily the lowest. This guy is a piece of human debris. This bit is not "a little inappropriate", and it doesn't "leave us with laughter". There is no statute of limitations on joking about a man who was shot to death in his sleep by his troubled wife, but in this tedious "edgy" era, comedic duffers like Gary will do absolutely ANYTHING to get people to pay attention to them. My God, what a piece of shit.
Phil Hartman was, then and now, by far my favorite cast member on SNL. Even if you didn't personally know him you could get a sense of genuine kindness from him. He was such a fantastic talent who just doesn't deserve this kind of treatment. And I don't give a fuck if this no talent hack calls himself a fan. This was horribly disrespectful and in incredibly poor taste. This was the equivalent of taken a dump on Phil Hartmans' tombstone and calling it a tribute. 1 star.
What the FUCK happened to decency? What the FUCK is the matter with this Shapiro Shithead? There is nothing funny about a man being murdered in his sleep. I want this fuckwit and the fuckwits in the audience to reevaluate their own humanity. Vulgar, stupid, Hartman does not deserve this desperate fucked-up bit. It makes me uncomfortable. Also, the political kick in the pants about gun ownership. Fuck you Shapiro and fuck you every asswipe in the audience. NOT FUNNY.
I can see how in the LA comedy scene, where Hartman is still a sacred cow, this kind of dull shit could create enough tension to make people laugh, but youtube shows it for what it is. 2700 hits in a year. Ouch.
I believe Phil would approve., but the cares of this world have now passed from him. I hope we can see you again, and not just in film clips., but I have miles to go before I sleep., R.I.P.
Well...all tributes are what they are, and this nonetheless is a tribute. I`m not sure what to make of it exactly but it was done with precision and taste (Rather than pure mock for the sake of either shock or discovery of some group of anti-phil`s approval)If I can say anything, I`ll bet Phil would have enjoyed his imitation under different circumstances being the great imitator he was
I have a sense of humor as much as the next person, I just think that this is a little inappropriate though, when Phil died, everyone was pretty sad over it. I do hope he was a fan though, and not just saying this to get a cheap laugh.
idk i think the reason he did this was because you know I think phil would have liked to leave us with laughter. He wouldnt want us to greive for his death. He would want us to celebrate his life in a way that would make us laugh. It was too soon for such a great man and it was a great loss. Well really miss him. I cant beleive its been 10 years
I thought it was a bit distasteful...nothing is funny about what happened to Phil, and this was back in 2003...5 years later...like the other poster said above it was "too soon", and I agree.
I still really can't get over the way he died, I know that might sound weird to you, cuz I never knew him and all, but that's how many of his fans feel like, and you might feel like that too.
I can't believe it's been 10 years already either, it's such a shame that he's not around anymore...:*(
Speaking as a someone who loves Phil Hartman's work and - to this day - still misses him I have to say this was absolutely hilarious. Sharp, unrelenting and rather cathartic as well. Thanks for posting this. RIP Phil.

Was he a friend of Phil's?

I'm guessing he wasn't. Probably just a fan with a properly twisted sense of humor.
