Main Coons are so sweet. My semi wild Amecrican mated with a Main Coon Male and spawned a beautiful sweet cat/Misty. Unfortunately, Misty died of a heart disease after 18 months. I am soooooooooooo sad. I decided to get a Main Coon cat to replace it.

are maine coons and norweigien forest cats just different names for the same species? i have 2 nfcs and their demenor and looks are so alike. one of mine weighs 15 pounds and his dad, no lie, was the size of a cocker spaniel. first time i ever saw a domestic cat that could take a person down should it choose to!

They are only phisically different by their ears. Maine coons have tufts of fur on their ears whil Norweigien forest cats don't. But remember that is only physically

Forest cats and main coons may actually be related. Rumor has it that forest cats were originally brought over by the vikings, when they came to America. Several hundred years we have the Maine Coon.

Interesting thing is, no one has done any genetics tests to see if the story is true. I'm willing to bet good money that it is, the cats are just too similar, right down to the water repellent hair.

My fiance and I have a Norwegian forest cat that we thought was a Maine Coon! Even the vet thought he was a Maine Coon.

-shorter whiskers than MC (although still long),

-Triangle, more narrow shaped face rather than more robust and square

- heavier fur on the chest and neck area - our NFC has a true "mane" that is like a lion!

- different voice! after being around Maine Coons, they have a very trill voice, almost like a chirp. Our NFC has a more traditional cat voice

Also, NFC are smaller. Male Maine coons average 14-18 pounds, while NFC average 10-15 pounds. Ours is only 11.2 pound male!

I have a Maine Coon who was the ugliest. most mis-behaved animal that I've ever cared for! Took him several years to become reasonably well behaved and he turned into a real beauty.

Although, last week, I was on a phone call and the line suddenly went dead. There was tiger with the phone cord in his mouth chewing away! This is about the 25th cord that I've had to replace but I still love him. LOL Are they all this bad when they are young?last week tho
