PC gain Ceredigion from LD - a very unusual result.
I'm surprised Chris Patten didn't come back to the House of Commons.
C majority predicted to be 5 now.
Lynda Chalker didn't stand a chance of holding Wallasey though the swing was kept down to 4% - Angela Eagle made generous comments about Mrs Chalker in her maiden speech.
David Dimbleby seems to be making the mistake of thinking all the Tory candidates in seats Labour gained were "out" where the incumbent had in fact retired.
@swanarcadian I think if Patten hadn't been given the post of Governor of Hong Kong, he'd have probably got another seat in a bye-election some time after. Or maybe not, after Black Wednesday later in 1992 the Conservatives never got a lead in the opinions polls again.
Just for the record, I cannot stand Angela Eagle. I live in Wallasey and she is my local MP. I voted against her this year but sadly the idiots on the left round here won't even consider conservatism.
@dezboss Chris Patten wouldn't have won a by-election in the crazy wild ride the 1992-1997 Parliament. He could have returned after the 1997 election in a ultra safe seat (like the one Portillo won in a by-election in 1999)
Inexplicably, this section begins with an interview with Kenneth Barker, who- without any warning- turns into a slug. I wish he'd do that less often.
