Can I just mention here the obvious problem with this methodology. I'm not questioning the accuracy of the statistic that one would save 33% in fuel.
The speed reduction will have you arrive at your destination obviously 30% later than you would otherwise do spending more unpaid hours driving.
Next you might save 33% on gas and engine efficiency but will take longer therefore more fuel overall (regardless of how efficiently you use that fuel) in the first place to arrive at your destination.
6. The entire working population of the USA would spend more time driving and less time in work or at home.
7. Traffic jams would increase since the road system is designed to cope with a specific volume at rush hour (not that there is any rush in rush hour to begin with)
8. The entire traffic light system in and out of cities would require modification.
The only time driving fast wastes gas is when you're hanging in high rpms, you can be cruising at 75 mph, and still be driving efficiently, just as long as your RPMs aren't high.
driving 55mph (about 90km/h) in Germany the police might pull you over for unnecessary slow driving (also at a maximum speed limit of 100km/h (65mp). The traffic police from state police services don't just look for speeders but also the to slow ones that also cause dangerous situations in traffic.
btw on parts of the german freeways without speed limit there's a recommened speed of 130km/h (about 80 mph).
Notice that most of the vehicles that passed you were a pickup/SUV/minivan? These people all have the same attitude: "GOTTA BE FIRST GOTTA BE IN FRONT GO GO GO ME ME ME!" It's King Me on the road, whether they have right of way or not, whether someone else is there or not. It's these people who cause most of the accidents.
I don't drive a single mile an hour faster for these dimbulbs either. Go around me or pay as you go through me - your choice.
WOO! gas FACT guys! HAHA, those reports are ridiculous because you are making up the amount of gas you "save" by the amount of time you waste. INFACT you are wasting the gas and money AND TIME of people who have real lives because they have to sit behind your slow ass or having to speed up to pass you
Some people spend their time in better ways than playing silly Warcraft. You will not find a single peer-reviewed study supporting your claim. 75 is not much faster than 55, especially considering short distances. For a 20-mile commute, traveling 75 takes 16 min while 55 takes 22 min. The average speed is actually much closer to 45 mph taking into account traffic jams and street lights. You save much less than 6 minutes.
Cool story bro. I hope you tell the ambulance running you from a car crash to go 55 on the freeway, just in case he had any intention of getting you to the hospital in time.
Try driving 55mph in Minnesota..you won't make it very far before some D-bag is going 45 in the fast lane and won't get out of the way. I encounter this multiple times everyday. Less than the speed limit is the norm here.. It's miserable. Driving in LA is a breath of fresh air. Not only are there plenty of lanes, but people GO.
Here in the UK driving 55 wouldn't just fuck up your fuel economy it would fuck up every working piece on your car. You have to be going at least 80 mph so that you would fly over the pot holes and ice patches. Its like driving on the roads of Afghanistan.
By FAR the dumbest fucking video I have EVER seen. Yeah let's all drive 55 and watch our economy go even further down the tubes.
This speed limit is not GAS or SAFETY related.
It is TAX revenue for the state via police depts.
Jimmy Carter passed the law of 55, and also said, states can choose whether or not they would like to have it, but it they did NOT choose it, they would receive NO federal highway money.
Seems to me this is just another dumb liberal video
As a liberal, I am glad physics is on my side. For most California highways, 65 mph is the appropriate speed limit because it is engineered out a balance for speed, efficiency, and safety. It is not appropriate to raise it because speed influences the other two factors negatively while exacerbating the frequency and intensity of traffic jams which inevitably bring down your avg speed anyway.
Umm, the national 55 limit was passed in 1973 under Nixon in response to the first oil embargo. Please read before spewing opinion as fact.
The reason it didn't save as much gas or lives as was projected is because there was such low compliance with the law. Then people whined when they earned themself a ticket for speeding. This is the flawed logic used by the speeders as to why 55 didn't work.
A simple review of peer-reviewed scientific literature reveals that no credible organization or group of qualified climate scientists disagree with the consensus on human-caused global warming. There is no reason to interpret it as funny.
I tried going 45 MPH for a 100 mile trip once and squeezed 34 miles to the gallon in a car that normally gets about 28 (1997 Chevy Cavalier). But I still get 27 MPG at 75 MPH, so I don't know...
Hey man, I did almost that same drive (Ventura to Disneyland) last Thursday in my '96 Land Rover Discovery. People were passing me like crazy, but I got 19.6 mpg in a 12 year old V8 Rover that was tested at 16 mpg on the highway!
...and yes, "global warming" is a bunch if B.S. as some of the postings have said.
Most of all California Freeways need to be repaved, but it's not going to happen, because of the budget freeze, thanks to dumbass Arnold Swartzenegger (The Governator I like to call him) we're going to continue like this.
They Freeways have always been that way, I used to live in Victorville and I-15 was horrible to drive on into the IE. Yaa California doesn't have very good luck with any of it's elected people who tax the hell out of you then this crap happens. If I were you I would get out! lol
Well where are the results? How much gas did you save? Where is the stats? It looks to me that you were just getting passed left & right by trucks with trailers, no less.
Facts are, CO2 levels in the atmosphere were 14 times higher 300,000 years ago than they were today. LIFE DID NOT END due to that CO2 level, did it? The earth didn't bake to a crisp as Al Gore & his Global Carbon TAX would like you to believe, huh?
Co2 Global Warming scare is a tactic to tax your life even further! WAKE UP!
results from her experiment show that gas prices are NOT high, just because media says gas prices are high, just because they went from $3 to $4 it does not mean anything,
people adapt, they go from V8 to 4 cylinder, they figure out ways to drive less,
stop whining like CNN and FOX do, those clowns need something to bark at,
has anyone been affected by the so called "high gas prices", really, have you?
The results revealed that drivers are not slowing down to speeds that have been proven to not only save gas and money, but also reduce enormous amounts of carbon emissions spewing into our atmosphere.
How have high gas prices affected the U.S. population? Please watch another video that I created, GAS CRISIS: Interviews w/Gas Station Patrons, Orange, CA USA.
Ok, first off, Carbon Dioxide is NOT a toxic gas. Plants NEED it to live. Ice Core samples dating back 300,000 years show that Co2 levels in the atmosphere were 14 TIMES higher. (FOURTEEN TIMES HIGHER) than they are today. What happens when there is more CO2? Studies show: PLANTS ARE GREENER, HEALTHIER, LIVE LONGER. It also creates MORE plants. More plants? More creatures= MORE LIFE. What you should be worried about is HYDROCARBON & Carbon Monoxide emissions, NOT CO2!! Do some research!
@mom4education The primary cause of Co2 emissions is not the private motorist. it is commercial vehicles, trains, places and industry..
Cars can essentially be ignored when calculating Co2 emissions. Even if we stopped all private motorists worldwide from driving the CO2 emissions would fall less than 1%.
Ironically you are suggesting we add more cost to commercial delivery times... which would exacerbate that problem.
What is required is overall efficiency in combustion technology.
Increasing fuel prices by 1/3 or more in a short time span has an impact on nearly everyone, including those who do not drive. Transporting goods and providing services becomes more expensive, which is passed on to the end customer one way or another.
The degree to which someone notices the impact depends upon overall income level and amount of discretionary income available to make up the difference.
Can I just mention here the obvious problem with this methodology. I'm not questioning the accuracy of the statistic that one would save 33% in fuel.

CONT. So the overall result if everyone was to do this would be the following.
1. There would be more cars on the road for longer since everyone would take longer to get from A to B.
2. The fuel consumption would be the same, or more, even if it is more efficient (which is not likely)
3. More cars on the road for longer will result in more RTA's
4. Cars will suffer degradation at a faster rate since they are operating longer.
5. Consumer goods delivery prices would rise by more than 33%
MumblingMickey 2 months ago
CONT.
6. The entire working population of the USA would spend more time driving and less time in work or at home.
7. Traffic jams would increase since the road system is designed to cope with a specific volume at rush hour (not that there is any rush in rush hour to begin with)
8. The entire traffic light system in and out of cities would require modification.
9. Road maintenance would rise by MORE than 33%
10. Insurance costs would rise.
11. The second hand car market would implode!
