do some research on ''democracy'' kid and you will find out that democracy makes it way in to a country with tanks and gun fire...the samurai had a code of honor and discipline.
@PolakBear Not really, they were fighting for the people on the imperial court who welcomed at the changes that the western people brought to Japan, including industry and a end to the life of the Samurai, thats what the samurai was fighting for here, to preserve their ancient and sacred way of life.
@dondondodo Neither weapon is equal, what truly matters is the person wielding it. I may be wrong but i think that's a lesson some of us have forgotten in today's services
Is it awesome and have some very cool battle scenes? Yes.
Do I think that maybe people should stop complaining and start enjoying how excellently they depicted an army of Samurai making a brave last stand? Absolutely.
@asdfbobbyasdf True, but to be a huge history nerd here, the first actual western samurai, was a british sailor who was granted the two swords from the Shogun to represent his authority as a samurai.
All this arguing about history is useless, just so you guys know. This movie is a movie, and doesn't claim to be anything more. You guys arguing about a 150 year old revolt is interesting, but idiotic.
@JustFlemishMe In these times (I mean the Edo period) without any war, the samurai became more like clerks than warriors. And remember that many of their feudal lords opposed shogun who had agreed to break the isolation.
@SharoRioni Yes, there were always Daimyo saying they should trade with foreigners. Why? I never found out. And, well, Samurai served the emperor. If they could do so better with a pen than with a katana, of course His Majesty's interests were more important. But in essence, theywere a caste of warriors - and damn good ones too (logical, since they started training at 10).
Tom Cruise's best film, period. According to Ken Watanabe Tom Cruise worked his butt off learning Kendo. HARD. Great compliment from the industrious Japanese. Ken Watanabe is kendo master.
@JustFlemishMe I'd also like for Japan to not break the isolation, but in fact, Japan didn't have much choice. The american commodore Matthew Perry forced japanese shogun to sign the trade treaty with the US. American navy was far more powerful than japanese. Signing the trade treaty and breaking the isolation was the only wise option for Japan.
@SharoRioni I can imagine why not! But why would the Samurai asume a loss against some mere gaijin ('foreigners')? The Emperor was a god. And even if their navy was crushed, they'd just fight on land - the terrain where their warriors had the more experience.
If shogunate won, Japan probably would not have a strong military, so it would not be strong enough to invade other countries and commit many unforgivable crimes during WWII, and it probably wouldn't get nuked by U.S.
@vvvSoulreapervvv With all due respect to the Divine Emperor Meiji: ending the Japanese Isolation was a mistake. They all were happy with how things were before those Western types replaced the 'native' culture. Now, of course, they have no choice but to follow. But if I could do it all over, I would just sit on my island, unite all the people, and live in peace.
God damn does everyone need to argue about what they do and don't like about this movie? and does it really matter if Tom Cruise was in it? He is a good actor so deal with it. It's a movie so live with it you fucking idiots.
The Samurai will rise again, they will once again pick up arms and take there revenge against America for what they have done to them and I cant wait for that to happen, the Americans will pleed for mercy but the Samurai show no Mercy!
@JSLegoMaster My comment was a reply to someone who wanted the samurai to rise up and take over the world and kill white people, and I'm not American either.
@JSLegoMaster Would you honestly expect a soldier trained to use guns, in an army that uses guns, in a culture that uses guns, to be able to defeat a soldier who has trained since he was a small child in the art of one-on-one, hand-to-hand combat in a culture that revolves around the use of swords and personal honor?
It's funny how people who trash America and Americans are often much more ignorant than the people they're insulting.
You missunderstood my comment cimpletley - what i said was that a samurai would totaly dominate in a hand to hand combat against pretty much every solider nowadays
@JSLegoMaster You misunderstood what I said, modern day soldiers don't focus on hand to hand, they shoot people. They learn to aim and they learn to protect themselves from a guy with a knife, not engage in sword combat.
@BlobTheBunny Talking about soldiers trained to use guns... let's see... the Satsuma revolt took place in 1877... the Imperial forces were using weapons from around the 1850s... That would pretty much still be the time where you go "Fire, fix bayonets, charge!". Oh, yes, and cavalry meant "guy on a horse with a sabre in his hand". Do you have any general concept of... you know... history? That's the time when things weren't necessarily the way they are now, kid.
@SteinbrecherBack I have no clue why you're talking about soldiers from the 1800's, I was only ever talking about modern day soldiers and samurai. @BlobTheBunny What the fuck were you talking about modern-day soldiers fighting Japanese feudal ruling classes? That doesn't even deserve to be called retarded. Also, how would I get the idea it's what you were talking about? Let's see... very unspecific post beneath a fake history film... yeah, how DID I get to that? Prat.

@Supremecript I think you're being a bit irrational. If you know anything about the true story behind this film, there is a FRENCH man, aka in that time period white, who joined forces with the samurai after being so influenced by their culture to fight against the Meiji Gov't. The other movies I cannot speak for.
@Supremecript I am white but i prefer to be consider as my Cherokee fathers side. i believe that the big arguement in Hollywood is you either gotta be Black or white :/ i think we need more spanish, asian and Native American people as the heros in movies, because they were more of heros in wars than Blacks or whites
@DestroyerOfSense000 You do realise that this is not in any way close to the real Satsuma revolt, don't you? Please tell me you don't actually believe even one second of what is shown in any "historical film" from Hollywood...
@SteinbrecherBack I know that this movie is romantic fantasy. By this time the samurai were just a corrupt and dying nobility and probably hadn't fought in ages. I love the heroism, however. That's why I talk about this movie so favorably. But even this sort of heroism, for the most part, is romantic fantasy
@ThePsych0mantis I suppose you are American dont forget who helped you in your independence war who gave you the statue of Liberty us French we had Napoleon dont call us gays
It was actually good that the samurai lost. If the samurai had won, japan would have been taken over by the US. A guy called Perry or Pelly or something was trying to take japan
@TheNinjanordundor The fuck are you talking about? Japan never tried to take over the US. It was the US with its warship, the matthew.c. perry that bombarded Japan to force them out of their isolationism policy. Your ignorance is outstanding.
@ContinentalPatriot Well it might have been for the best at the end since Japan never got colonized thanks to the Meiji restoration but it does not justify the bombardment. Saying so is just stupid.
@ricyorb Well it depends whose side you're on. If you were in vital need of a trade partner and the only reaosn they wouldn't trade was because they wanted to be isolated, it's kind of annoying.
@TheNinjanordundor Well, if the Japanese hadn't broken their isolation, no one would have had any reason for coming there. I'm actually against 'Westernizing'. Do you know why they forced themselves to?
@JustFlemishMe If the American navy sail into Tokyo bay with ships and gunpowder based weapons you've never even heard of, you'd be pretty fucking terrified too. That was why they broke the isolation.
@BladesNstuffs Why would they asume it existed if they 'never even heard of' it? And if they came, I'll quote Daimyo Katsumoto Moritsugu: "It makes no difference. They will come and we will make our stand." I'd just be insulted, get my katana, assemble a party of Samurai and attack. Get on board, and they aren't that tough anymore.
@JustFlemishMe Perry sailed into Tokyo after terrified Japanese civilians ran away from the beaches, claiming sea dragons were attacking Japan. After the Shogunite saw the cannons they realized "Oh shit, us and out swords don't stand a chance"
@BladesNstuffs If I were the Emperor and heard some civilians claimed "We are under attack from sea dragons", I'd send an admiral to check it out, he'd probably recognize those things as ships, and I'd just order a full attack to punish such insolence. And surely with an entire fleet some Samurai would have managed to board - and then try and defeat them!
@Aljianify If they fought they would probably show great respect after... if they fought honorably. Of course, both the samurai and the Spartans were known for being very arrogant but if they looked beyond that... you know what, it's just a nice thought. They would both be very worthy foes. :)
Unfortunately, many Japanese were smiling contemptuously watching this movie.
Because we know in the 16th century battlefield, the Samurai is using guns and cannons as a usual weapon.some historians say that in the Sengoku period(16th-1615) ,half of the matchlock guns of the world was produced in Japan.and the main weapon of a samurai was the spear for close combat. watching Kurosawa's film , you will have a better understanding about this. to be honest, this movie is too expedient to the west.
@juliengong1 I'm not a huge fan of Tom Cruise, but he did an amazing job in this movie. This movie is very underrated and completely amazing because of how it tells of history without being overly graphic or using crazy special effects. I love a movie that with the music alone and just looking at someone's face, you know exactly what they are thinking. This movie was great and touching.
Just like what happend over here during the apache wars and stuff.

@ricyorb Well it depends whose side you're on. If you were in vital need of a trade partner and the only reaosn they wouldn't trade was because they wanted to be isolated, it's kind of annoying.
ContinentalPatriot 1 month ago
@ricyorb Sorry thats what i ment. The us tried to take over japan
TheNinjanordundor 1 month ago
@TheNinjanordundor Well, if the Japanese hadn't broken their isolation, no one would have had any reason for coming there. I'm actually against 'Westernizing'. Do you know why they forced themselves to?
JustFlemishMe 1 month ago
@JustFlemishMe If the American navy sail into Tokyo bay with ships and gunpowder based weapons you've never even heard of, you'd be pretty fucking terrified too. That was why they broke the isolation.
BladesNstuffs 1 month ago
@BladesNstuffs Why would they asume it existed if they 'never even heard of' it? And if they came, I'll quote Daimyo Katsumoto Moritsugu: "It makes no difference. They will come and we will make our stand." I'd just be insulted, get my katana, assemble a party of Samurai and attack. Get on board, and they aren't that tough anymore.
JustFlemishMe 4 weeks ago
@JustFlemishMe Perry sailed into Tokyo after terrified Japanese civilians ran away from the beaches, claiming sea dragons were attacking Japan. After the Shogunite saw the cannons they realized "Oh shit, us and out swords don't stand a chance"
BladesNstuffs 3 weeks ago
@BladesNstuffs If I were the Emperor and heard some civilians claimed "We are under attack from sea dragons", I'd send an admiral to check it out, he'd probably recognize those things as ships, and I'd just order a full attack to punish such insolence. And surely with an entire fleet some Samurai would have managed to board - and then try and defeat them!

Samurais + Spartans = FUCKING EPIC
Aljianify 1 month ago 20

Of course they did. They are after all trying to present the classic under dog story and romanticize the samurai despite them being quite corrupt.

Seriously people watch the entire movie to find out why a white dude is in it.
