The original LRDG were nearly all New Zealanders..the finest soldiers in the world. Such a pity some of the negative commentson here from Americans who only want to hear about the Americans being heroes.
Rommel is the only General/Feild Marshall i respect and like(hence: the tribute i made).
He never agreed to kill prisoners or civilians(even jewish soldiers) he went up against Hitler due to Hitler being branded as a "mad man" by most of the Wehrmacht Leaders(including Rommel). He also disagreed with the killings of innocentsby the SS, so did some of the Wehrmacht leaders(again) but they never said anything about the killings, most likely the fear of going up against Hitler.
uuhhmmm Mr here needs to re evaluate his historical facts... He says Rommel invented alot ( he s a good commander, dont get me wrong ) but in fact he used the fruits of von Rundstedt, von Manstein`s thought, and had alot of help from his a1`s...
''promotion to DAK?'', ''inventing schwerepunkt?''... lmao
anyone who betrays his nation deserves death, not as punishment but to end their shame. rommel was a gr8 general but he did betray hitler and hitler was germany at that time. i think hitler was fair with what he did. hi cant just not do anything!!
If I had been Rommel and had been given the choice of suicide or being tried in Freisler's kangaroo court, I would have chosen the latter. He would have been executed, but at least he could have made a public statement about how Hitler had destroyed the Germany he grew up with.
@vatonorteno Apparently you didn't know that if you were convicted of treason in Nazi Germany, then you AND your entire family is executed.. not just you. He chose suicide to save his family. Even in his last minute before death, he was an honorable man.
@nalemanni Please cite the source for your contention. I can find no record, for example, that those convicted of treason such as those who conspired to assassinate Hitler and members of the White Rose who were executed after being convicted of the same charge also had their entire families executed in the process.
@vatonorteno David Erving reveals the details in his book "The Trail of the Fox". The punishment of the family members would take place off the record, so its no surprise that there aren't many sources. Manfred Rommel himself also spoke of what he was saved from because of Erwin's actions during his testimony at the Nuremberg trials. Hope this helps
@nalemanni Claus von Stauffenberg's and Sophie and Hans Scholl's entire families survived the war and there were certainly others convicted of treason whose families were not also executed. Yes, there were some purges which did affect some family members and associates of those convicted of treason, but one cannot say that "the entire families" of all those convicted of treason in Nazi Germany were also executed.
@vatonorteno LOL - I loved watching that show as a kid (I'm OLD!!). I bought the DVD set a few weeks back. My God, how cheesy it is! It's actually HARD to watch now! hahaha! What were they thinking when they made that show? It's pretty goofy - but it does bring me back.

@tess1337 How many American B-17 Bomber flight crews curshed Germany from 1941_1945? USA Merchant Marine Sailors brought vital supplies 2 Murmansk, 50,000. USA fought two wars @ same time + we tied the Japs down so they could not invade Siberia again. This allowed Siberian troops to Stalingrad + made it possible defeat German 6th Army @ Stalingrad. US fought in Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normandy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Phillipines, Iwo Jima, Sai pan, Guam, Marshall Iands +Burma. .
@LottoWinner999 Nazi Germany was "Small Potatoes". Germany is lucky that American are so kind cuz + we saved I from the Russians + in May 1945 we fed straving German men, women + children. USA gave free medical care, clothing, food + coal to heat your home. In 1948 we organized the Berlin Airlift that saved West Berliners from Russian occupation + forced starvation. U should watch Berlin Airlift on Uube so can learn how kind we are to Germany + than U realize what an ungrateful asshoel U are.
@tess1337 Well my Kleine Kraut Steiner was a fag who betrayed Der Fuhrer in the end. If U know anything about fight troops combat it would that you can acutally read. Ameicas best troop were in the Pacific defeating the Japs. The Japs were better soldiers than Krauts + the fact every battle was Amphibian Operation. If the USA only to fight Germany we would have defeated U Krauts in less than a year. In Tinian there were 3,500 B-29 Super Bombers with 40,000 USAAF Airman to fly them.
@tess1337 German POWS in USA received the same food + medical care US Soldiers did. German POWS were taken to the movies + we gave U jobs so they would have pocket money. We did not murder German POWS like U krauts did @ Malmedy. I don't know why U hate Americans when the USA saved Germany from Russia. U behavior + hatred of Americans proves that U Germans R A race of serial killers with an inbred defective gene that turnsU into Psychotic Murderers. U need to accept reality German R losers.
Honestly i really like Steven Pressfield, he is a brilliant writer, but this short movie was not that exact. What really beaten the Rommel, was lack of supplies, due to british attacks on german convoys from Malta. His tanks were unable to move becouse they had no fuel+ammunition. And Germans didn´t conquered Malta, due to lack of resources and soldiers becouse of operation Barbarossa, that was strike on soviets...And Monty was almost totaly incompetent...Patton and Alaxander did some nice stuf
@WW2GermanMilitaria SAS were very good even in their beginnings during WWII but, definitely they didn´t defeat rommel and no allied general defeated him becouse of his skills, but as i mentioned before becouse of hitlers decision.
@schniteldelieveryboy You are missunderatanding something here, the german tanks were superior over the british, but the allies had first, more tanks, more men, more planes, and controlled most of the sea around north africa.
Some of the things in this Documentary are not that true. They over exaggerate the advantge that rommel had. The british navie sunk most of the supportvessles from italy and the british airforce was much more effective than the slowmoving tanks of ther germans. That is the reason why the british won in north africa, not because of some Jeeps with machine guns, that is a joke.
Rommel had no fuel no tanks and was outnumbered 4 to 1 and go check the facts he kicked thier asses for what he had, he made VWs into fake tanks with plywood on both side painted to look like Panzer IVs and took the mufflers off and put chains on the back bumpers to make tons of dust and he out fought and out manuvered the British and with only 72 tanks he made over 400 retreat many times and The Sas did a great job but they didnt defeat Rommel! Hitler did!!
The Australian, New Zealand, Indian and English forces stopped Rommel in Tobruk.
Rommel was noted in saying "Give me a Division of Australian soldiers, and i will conquer the world..."
Rommel's opponent General, an Australian by the name of General Moreshead ran the whole Tobruk Campaign until the Australian's and English left after 272 days of defending and holding back Rommel's forces at Tobruk.
google his name,or even basic wikipedia man, cuz ur pretty clueless there wow
its the fact that he didnt carry out hitlers 'commando order' to shoot prisoners or chose to ignore the jew law is why he is respected by mostly the opponents he faught against
even a brit general said "in a time when so many brought germany shame, the afrika korps showed great chivalry"
go read before u open your gorilla mouth again :O not hard

Rommel time and time again acquiesced to Gestapo &SS , by 'turning a blind eye' to Jews in his theatre of war, sent to their torture and death. Rommel yeilded to stay on the right side of the Himmler/Hitler killing programme.
As a senior commander, he would have been well aware of death-camps in th occupied territories.
After the capture of Auschwitz by the Allies, the personal possessions of many Tunisian and Libyan Jews were found here and in other deathcamps.
Libya was an italian colony. There was a very small SS unit 500 kilometers away from Rommel which send 300 jews to a small concentration camp, not a extermination camp like Auschwitz. All survived. There is no evidence that Rommel knew of their fate. The Italians were responsible for deporting 5000 jews to work camps, not Rommel. Rommel didn´t obey Hitlers orders to kill POWs or innocents. There is not a single evidence that Rommel knew of the Holocaust. That´s all known facts.
Rommel formed a friendship with Goebels during the war. The myth of Rommel was carefully cultivated by Goebbels who wanted to create a military genius from the egotistic Rommel for propaganda purposes.
Goebbels work persists to this day, although this is partly because the West made use of the myth during the cold war against Russia. However, by examining facts and stripping back the glamour of the myth, a clear picture emerges of yet another shameful little war-monger.
"He also deserves our respect, because, although a loyal German soldier, he came to hate Hitler and all his works, and took part in the conspiracy to rescue Germany by displacing the maniac and tyrant. For this, he paid the forfeit of his life. In the sombre wars of modern democracy, there is little place for chivalry."

Rommel was a pathetic, egotistic failure. This nonsense is rubbish tries to glorify Rommel. A failed general and a puppet fieldmarshal. Rommel was a degenrate and an embarrassment to the German people.
Fldmshl Rommel was no degenerate! No-one here glorifies him, they merely re-state what other well regarded histrorians and Allied generals have said over the last 60years. There is no doubt there are other German Generals and Fldmshls that will forever bring embarrassment, dishonour and disgrace upon Germany; Hoepner, Paulus, Riechenau, Keitel, Jodl, Remer, far more than Rommel ever will.
You have to understand one thing that Rommel was the only general to not prosecute or kill jews. In fact he freed them. He was the only commander who did not lose his conscience.
Rommel's greatest triumph was in the field of public relations, something hitler readily aceded to in most all cases. There were far more capable General officers in the German forces. If Rommel was so demonstrably superior why was he never dispatched to the real action center: Russia?
Maybe becuse he was in africa? and russia wasnt so much of a problem at first. And you dont think the D-day at normandie was a real action center? It is probably the best known battle of all time. Rommel was a great leader. He was a great man. Rommel played a big part of the taking of france, normandie and the war in africa. I would say he was very capable. Russia got their ass kicked at first but then it changed at stalingrad. Same as El'alamein in africa.
Because up until El-Alemain, he was performing brilliantly, with a small rag tag force; mightly outnumbered and outgunned in numbers, he forced the retreat of the Commonwealth Army. What Fuhrer would have been brave enough to pull a celebrated General out of a successful campaign and commit him to another; a public relations disaster. Apart from Guderian, Hoth, Manstein, and a handful of others, I not convinced they could have done beter with what he had on hand.
Chivalry on both sides! When I come to face my enemy (we all have one) I'd like to think I can behave the way these brave great men did! On the sunday closest to November 11th Britain honours it's war dead and by extension ALL who die in war. We have the poppy appeal were we all wear paper poppies (for weeks) the proceeds go to supporting old soldiers, Our Majesty the Queen lays a wreath at the Cenotaph and thier is a parade of troops with great gravity. I respect our respect.
Remember that the Long Range Desrt Group did not always operate alone. They were the transporters of Popski's Private Army and the Free French, but I agree with some historians who say that without these men the allies would have lost North Afica and perhaps the war.
it depends on how you look at it, if you call superior using quantity and power to overwhelm the enemy than the germans had the upper hand, but if you think speed and surprise are superrior than the british had the upper hand.
@mendelin1 There is a movie and its called the Desert Fox and it is out by CBS it starred James Mason as Rommel and It tells alot of the truth. Not bad but it could have done more about the plot to kill Hitler and also some of his other notable accomplishments. The end of the movie is really good it shows Winston Churchill and his speech to Parlament on the Integrety of General Rommel and his influence on the war.
my grandpa fought under rommels order! (i hope this is correct) he said he was the biggest general in WWII! rommel was no nazi and hated the contract of versailles. he was the greatest strategist in germany and WW2!
Steffen if your dear grandpa is still alive tell him a stranger thats abses with the afrika korps said "Ihr Vater ist ein großer Mann zu dienen unter Kommando von Erwin Rommel, ich respektiere Ihren Vater sehr viel, und ich bete zu begrüssen ihn persönlich" which translate to be "Your father is a great man for serving under command of Erwin Rommel, I respect your father alot and I would adore to salute him personally"
I just finished reading "Killing Rommel." I have not read any of Pressfield's other novels before; I surely will now.
This is a quick read, fascinating, full of inspiring tales of persistence, ingenuity and comaraderie.
What the members of the Long Range Desert Group endured on their risky missions in hellish conditions...it's hard to believe people would sacrifice so much. Pressfield did a masterful job at bringing their story to life.
Although your grandpa fought against Rommel I respect EVERYONE who even had to do with anything with Rommel, fight him or serve under him now I just want you to know someone respects and would glandly hand shake your grandpas hand.
I was sad that Clooney cancelled to make a movie out of Pressfield's book, Gates of fire, of the 300 Spartans. Clooney saw how the movie '300' made millions and his movie 'Leatherheads' was a flop.
The only reason Rommel lost in Afrika is because Hitler wouldnt give him more rations and reeinforcements. Rommel was more worried about how to fill his tanks up with gas than fighting his enemy.
I can never look at Monty as a good General just famous because who was the commanding General in charge when Rommel's forces were finally exausted after a massively long advance and over stretched supply line. Defending army who wins because they outnumber the attacking army isn't a major victory really. Look up the name Paul Emil von Lettow Vorbeck, only First World War undefeated General.
Wow. This video illustrates how well Pressfield researches his books. He also writes nasty, vivid, visceral battle scenes. I can't wait for this book!

LottoWinner999 1 year ago

WW2GermanMilitaria 2 months ago
@WW2GermanMilitaria SAS were very good even in their beginnings during WWII but, definitely they didn´t defeat rommel and no allied general defeated him becouse of his skills, but as i mentioned before becouse of hitlers decision.
Rooivalk789 2 months ago
@schniteldelieveryboy You are missunderatanding something here, the german tanks were superior over the british, but the allies had first, more tanks, more men, more planes, and controlled most of the sea around north africa.
Fruitjoke 1 year ago
Some of the things in this Documentary are not that true. They over exaggerate the advantge that rommel had. The british navie sunk most of the supportvessles from italy and the british airforce was much more effective than the slowmoving tanks of ther germans. That is the reason why the british won in north africa, not because of some Jeeps with machine guns, that is a joke.
Fruitjoke 1 year ago
@schniteldelieveryboy So true, the only thing rommel had for him was the dual purpous 88s.

The LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) was formed way before the SAS and David Stirling. The LRDG was generally made up of New Zealand soldeirs.
The Tobruk campaign was from 1940-1942 way before the US was involved.
If you want a great read, read Tobruk by Peter Fitzsimons...

He completely misses the whole prior war way before the US and the SAS were even thought of in the war!!
Get YOUR facts straight first....!!!!!
austcommdiver 1 year ago
The Australian, New Zealand, Indian and English forces stopped Rommel in Tobruk.
Rommel was noted in saying "Give me a Division of Australian soldiers, and i will conquer the world..."
Rommel's opponent General, an Australian by the name of General Moreshead ran the whole Tobruk Campaign until the Australian's and English left after 272 days of defending and holding back Rommel's forces at Tobruk.

Rommel was a failure, a moral catastrophe and a degenerate deserving no respect whatsoever.
As usual on these pages you get those that want to portray Rommel as some kind of noble soldier.
Rommel died in ignominy as a suicidee coward complicit in Nazi arrangements to 'stage' his death and funeral.
A patheitc and undeserving general and Hitlers puppet fieldmarshal destined to become a dusty footnote in history.

google his name,or even basic wikipedia man, cuz ur pretty clueless there wow
its the fact that he didnt carry out hitlers 'commando order' to shoot prisoners or chose to ignore the jew law is why he is respected by mostly the opponents he faught against
even a brit general said "in a time when so many brought germany shame, the afrika korps showed great chivalry"

OccamRazRez 2 years ago

SopmodJack556762 2 years ago
Fldmshl Rommel was no degenerate! No-one here glorifies him, they merely re-state what other well regarded histrorians and Allied generals have said over the last 60years. There is no doubt there are other German Generals and Fldmshls that will forever bring embarrassment, dishonour and disgrace upon Germany; Hoepner, Paulus, Riechenau, Keitel, Jodl, Remer, far more than Rommel ever will.
Hallenbach 2 years ago
You have to understand one thing that Rommel was the only general to not prosecute or kill jews. In fact he freed them. He was the only commander who did not lose his conscience.

Rommel's greatest triumph was in the field of public relations, something hitler readily aceded to in most all cases. There were far more capable General officers in the German forces. If Rommel was so demonstrably superior why was he never dispatched to the real action center: Russia?
nelsonmalmutt 2 years ago
Maybe becuse he was in africa? and russia wasnt so much of a problem at first. And you dont think the D-day at normandie was a real action center? It is probably the best known battle of all time. Rommel was a great leader. He was a great man. Rommel played a big part of the taking of france, normandie and the war in africa. I would say he was very capable. Russia got their ass kicked at first but then it changed at stalingrad. Same as El'alamein in africa.
Pepparmos 2 years ago
Because up until El-Alemain, he was performing brilliantly, with a small rag tag force; mightly outnumbered and outgunned in numbers, he forced the retreat of the Commonwealth Army. What Fuhrer would have been brave enough to pull a celebrated General out of a successful campaign and commit him to another; a public relations disaster. Apart from Guderian, Hoth, Manstein, and a handful of others, I not convinced they could have done beter with what he had on hand.
Hallenbach 2 years ago
Rommel himself stated he would of succeeded in Africa if he had just half the resources available to the Allies. ^^
Luminahawke 2 years ago
Well Hitler kinda made him commit suicide shortly after Africa was lost.. not really much time to go to Russia eh?

Chivalry on both sides! When I come to face my enemy (we all have one) I'd like to think I can behave the way these brave great men did! On the sunday closest to November 11th Britain honours it's war dead and by extension ALL who die in war. We have the poppy appeal were we all wear paper poppies (for weeks) the proceeds go to supporting old soldiers, Our Majesty the Queen lays a wreath at the Cenotaph and thier is a parade of troops with great gravity. I respect our respect.
Faubracht 3 years ago
Remember that the Long Range Desrt Group did not always operate alone. They were the transporters of Popski's Private Army and the Free French, but I agree with some historians who say that without these men the allies would have lost North Afica and perhaps the war.
Faubracht 3 years ago
it depends on how you look at it, if you call superior using quantity and power to overwhelm the enemy than the germans had the upper hand, but if you think speed and surprise are superrior than the british had the upper hand.

its true, the germans and Rommel had better quality instruments of warfare than the Allies did.

Pressfield is an excellent author and writer!
I was sad that Clooney cancelled to make a movie out of Pressfield's book, Gates of fire, of the 300 Spartans. Clooney saw how the movie '300' made millions and his movie 'Leatherheads' was a flop.

I look up to Rommel. But.. Monty.. never..
Rommel was great and led a great life..
Montgomery.. ughh...
The only reason Rommel lost in Afrika is because Hitler wouldnt give him more rations and reeinforcements. Rommel was more worried about how to fill his tanks up with gas than fighting his enemy.
KyraFritzRZK 3 years ago
I can never look at Monty as a good General just famous because who was the commanding General in charge when Rommel's forces were finally exausted after a massively long advance and over stretched supply line. Defending army who wins because they outnumber the attacking army isn't a major victory really. Look up the name Paul Emil von Lettow Vorbeck, only First World War undefeated General.
