What an excellent idea to help revitalize your town! Who better than local artists to do such a thing... a treat for the eyes, ears and soul! BTW- wish I could see that painting on your wall a little more closely... looks really cool!
It's far more complicated than "Wal-Mart". The stores that are being phased out have not been around all that long. Unless you consider 20-50 years a long time. Couple big box stores with the following - internet purchases and the fact that kids aren't encouraged to leave the house. Kids aren't taken to main street as kids, so naturally they don't go when they are old enough. It's just all part of societal evolution.
In addition to walmart you have to through in the big box specialties that every town has these days: Staples, PetCo/PetSmart, JoAnne's, Michael's, Starbucks, SportMart, Marshall's, Kohl's, Home Depot/Lowe's... Basically any franchise you can name. The day of the corner diner are gone, now it's Denny's. Homogenization is what has happened. It's all the same everywhere, the regional distinctions are vanishing.

The big 'supermarkets' on the outskirts of town suck all the trade out. We have a 'Mall' here,just opened in the Autumn of '06 but a lot of the small businesses in town are shutting down.?
