  • Do you actually do repairs on a send in basis? I have a 3GS that got wet. Phone works fine. Back light is intermittent. I contacted an online repair service and they their quote is much higher than I am willing to pay. They say that the LCD needs replaced.

  • Its a Flux pen

it cleans the oxidation letting the solder attach to the coil/pads

I got it at Radio Shack

  • @tinner105 what was the name of the pen thing you used first before you took the coil off was it flex?

  • @tinner105 what tools can i use to remove the 6r8 coil?

  • New Email address is

    tinner105@verizon.net

  • hey your email doesn't work any more!

  • It's all about Karma

  • Great video... it is so great of you to help everyone. Many others would have their hands out before they told you anything!!

    Kudos to you Tinner!

Hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

  • hey tinner! awesome video but i have seem to run into an issue....When i was removing my 6r8 coil I somehow removed the left pad that is on the motherboard...uh is there anything i can do to fix this?

    thanks

    -Matt

  • hi tinner, i have one question, is it necessary to change the LCD if the iphone was drop into the water?, or is only matter of 6r8 coil changing?, thanks

  • @jlsm2222

You have to see if its good or bad.

If you have access to another 3gs try swapping the LCD assemblies.

Then you can find out a couple things.

    1. if yours works in the good iphone, then it's somthing in the iphone itself thats bad. coil etc....

    2. if it doesn't you know thay at least the LCD is bad. but there could still be somthing on the board thats bad.

  • FANTASTIC VIDEO!! I finally Got the Nerve to Try this on my old boars laying around and Tried this! WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! :-) TWO THUMBS UP!!! And Thank you for the Tutorial!!! Kc iPhone Doctor! Mike!

  • Great vid I'm trying it but if just wont do it for me I'll definitely send it in to you :)

  • First of all, as everyone already said - great video!!! And great job, I hope you'll getting a lot of business!!! I always wanted to learn some more advanced soldering, so that is what I'm trying to do right now ;)

I did some basic soldering before, like for example the mic on the same 3gs phone, but before I attempt to do what you're doing I need to get a better iron, so first questions is what would you recommend? Is the Weller WM120 good enough? I can't really tell what you're using

  • Awesome :D

  • Thanks for the video!

  • great vid

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

    "Grüße aus Deutschland"

  • tinner, you are the boss!

  • Sorry but there is no 6R8 coil in the 3g

  • @tinner105

What part is needed to fix the 3g? Thanks

  • @escottla

Theres a different coil and a IC that is in ther 3g backlight, its bigger than the coil for the 3g.

i have the coils on EBay right now and the ic's will be available this week as well.

check out my EBay store for the needed parts

    I'll post info above

  • Can you use a coil from a 3G to put in a 3GS?

  • Great video Tinner A+ is your grade my friend!

  • where do u find that suction thingy u have. o' yeah whats it called?.

  • What i do is remove the lcd assy and plug in a bare LCD and see if the backlight on it works.

if it don't..... I look elsewhere.

  • tinner, how do you differentiate a faulty lcd bulb and a bad water shorted coil?

  • I did this yesterday. I did not have water damage, but my coil had gone bad not allowing me to have a backlight. I watched this simple video, followed the directions, and I now have a working backlight. Thanks Tinner!

Tip for people: Chill on the solder. Getting it off is easy, melt solder and bam. Getting it on is more difficult. Place the chip in the areas and try to heat the metal part of the chip and existing solder before you decide to add solder. Too much solder = bad. Dont overheat board

  • cant u just buy a new lcd?

  • @TheTwinkeeBoi Sure you can. If the florescent bulb in the LCD that creates the backlight is bad. And it’s non serviceable. Yes you can just change the LCD. But if you get water inside (and it’s easy to do) the coil can be shorted out as well.

  • Thanks dude!! Jusr received the coil in the mail and following this, - 15 mins later, the backlight on my 3GS is working again!!!! LEGEND!!!!

  • Tinner105 please provide your email address so I may email you. I brought the 6r8 and tried it myself. I didn't have a successful mission. Please help me... I'll mail you the iPhone and pay you via paypal. Please help...

  • My son dropped wifes iphone in toilet, back light was only thing not working after it dried. Found this video, contacted tinner105, mailed him phone he fixed it at very reasonable rate and mailed it back. Works perfectly, thank you so much tinner105!

  • My son dropped wifes iphone in toilet. Mailed it to Tinner105 to fix it,

  • my backlight goes on and off frequently. will this fix it?

  • @nzcustomtechnology

email me and I'll help you out

  • Great video! Very well explained. You don't see them as good as this most of the times.

I will subscribe, but I was hoping for more video's ;)

  • I cleaned the 6r8 coil carefull with a fiberglass brush and the backlight works again.

  • tinner105 ! Great work, thanks, I have a couple of boards that need to be checked out, how do I contact you?

    thanks

  • Dude you're awesome for this. God Bless you!

  • Hey tinner105,

I bought a coil from you recently. I've disassembled the motherboard, but what I'm concerned with is the location where you replace the coil. Because mine got a metal plate covering that location. Problem is that I don't know how to remove these. Could you please inform me something about this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Ali Esrail

  • @pownown

I use my big thumb nail to do it.

the covers snap over the cage that i cut to replace the coil.

Just get your nail under it and pry it up and off.

Dont worry about bending it.... it will just snap back in place

  • @pownown They snap on. i use my thumb nail right in front of where the coil is and pry it up there and remove it.

    tinner

  • i bought a coil from your ebay account and failed to install it myself. what are the chances that the problem isn't my coil at all. i replaced the LCD and still no backlight. If i ship it to you and you replace the coil and it still doesn't work; what happens from there? thank you.

  • what kind soldering iron do you recommend?

  • @WBKAshtangaYoga

I bought an AOYUE 968 adjustable temp and hot air as well.

It's not very expensive either just over $100

  • good video thanks.

  • @Tinner ..do you know what coil is used for a iPod Touch 4th gen backlight? I have a 4th gen with a suspected blown coil but no info on the coil (manufacture, location, part#, ec.) any help would be great.

  • HI I have a question, where would I get a soldering iron as fine as yours?! Could you send me a link to one on ebay or something? How hot should it get?

  • great stuff!

  • Thank you for this great informative video @Tinner105.

  • They snap over the top of the cage.

Send me you email addy and i'll send you a couple pics that might help you out.

    Tinner

  • How do I remove the silver covers on the motherboard? The coil is under there.

  • quick question.......found corrosion on my iphone 3gs. What can I use to clean it?

    THanks

  • @Streetdemon03

If you have access to a ultrasonic jewelery cleaner use it.

If not use the highest % rubbing alcohol you can find. 70% is the normal stuff but you can get 91% stuff too.

soak it and gently scrub with an old tooth brush.

Thats what i used to use. it works OK not as good as a ultrsonic but OK

  • Thank you, I just fixed my iphone, the coil part can be found on ebay and amazon

  • I sell the correct coil on EBay myself.

    EBay seller Tinner105 item #230564155848

Glad you got the problem corrected no matter where you got the coil.

    Tinner105

  • Sorry but this isn't a solution to a 3g backlight problem. Email me and i can maybe piont you in the right direction

    Tinner105

  • This procedure was beyond my soldering abilities, but Connie (tinner105) did the job for me for a very reasonable price (I paid for shipping to him, he covered return shippng in his fee). My iPhone works great again. Thanks Connie!

  • Great video, very helpful thank you

  • I replaced the battery and the coil but I still got a dim light. Phone stays on now and It holds a charge. What should I replace now.......Cuz I figure the only thing left is the LCD screen...Or should I look at something else. Thanks

  • hey i got some coils of you on ebay, just came in this morning, i followed exactly what you did in the video, and my iphone backlight is working again, thanks soooooo much dude, i really appreciate it!

  • would like to get your email address and how much you charge to do this?

  • I got an Iphone 3gs.....It got some water damage from the sprinklers. and at first my backlight went out then my phone now wont turn on at all. I tried to charge it but it was getting hot so I stopped it....Could I have busted NE thing in there... What would you recommend to replace besides the coil to get the phone to turn on....and also should I open it and clean it with something to stop the corrosion.......NE help would be grateful....thanks....

  • Great Video,,, but little bit too long Oh well overall good, but is this for iPhone 3G tOO? :o)

  • @FixTronik No sorry this is not a fix for the 3g backlight problem. I had a few 3gs come in for a backlight problem and most ended up needing a new LCD. Sorry about my long winded video I actually had to edit it down;).

I'm going to get a video camera for my microscope and I’ll post some picts. showing the corrosion of some of the LCD’s I've changed out.

    Tinner105

  • Make sure you check out your LCD first.

Alot of Iphones i receive for backlight repair are just needing a new LCD.

If you need any help making sure contact me and I can help you out.

    tinner105
