@hudsonprivate No, it's a reprise of the main "Superstar" theme from the show. It's in a lower key that sounds exactly like "You Shook Me All Night Long," but it's not AC/DC.
two things to all the people saying shit about Jack being in this play, whether is in the "he aint worthy to" way, or in the "he disappointed us fans for doing it" way, first he is an actor and this play is BIG, why would'nt he want to partisipate, and olso for both of you, if you knwo a lill bit of this play, it was written to make fun of all Christian belivers for quite a lot of reasons, so stop acting like this is some sort of holly ritual or something, its a play a funny play infact
@filiesillo The play is the story of jesus's last few days as seen through Judas' eyes. Where you got that it is in any way a mock of anything is beyond me. Jack Black was a last minute addition and yes he is a self promoted atheist, but king harod, mocked jesus for claiming to be the christ and helped condemn him to death for their belief that he didnt exist, no religion comes into this part in the slightest. This was a charity event...Nothing more nothing less.
Maestroinfernus- So what? Jesus IS a jew. He died a Jew. Do people not know this? This must be the same spectrum of the US population that still believe Iraq had something to do with 9/11. When the Romans executed Jesus he died a Jew. He is my prophet and he happens to be a Jew. Again, so what?
@kaibybrunis Ok 2 things.... maestroinfernus, King Herod was a Jew as well, and in that way Kaibybrunis was correct in saying it isnt funny because Jack's character was a Jew. But cmon kaibybrunis... Jack played Kind Harod, not Jesus....
@stratman123 The "Jeepers Creepers Semi-Star" bit from Mr. Show was BRILLIANT!!! Oh, how I loved that show. DAMN HBO to heck for cancelling it. And praise be to David and Bob on high for featuring Jack Black in a variety of skits on that show.
No video will be released, or so I hear. They DID record it, officially, but the event was pulled together in a few weeks. I hear that the proshot video sucks, and is pretty much unwatchable.
really? I think King Herod is one of the best possible roles for Jack Black in this musical. Granted, I think he could do Judas, I think he could definitely hit the notes and is a great singer, but with his reputation, Herod seems perfect.
Here's the deal in this clip: the late Jack Nakano out together a one-night benefit performance of Superstar with Gary Goddard, my wife and others to benefit YouTheatre America. As Carl had passed, my pwife asked Vereen to play Judas, while Jack pulled his former student Black into the production at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre at Hollywood & Vine. No video allowed by Really Useful Group and the unions, so this was a bootleg from the audience. (My 8-year-old sat by Geena Davis & Harrison Ford)
No video allowed by RUG or the unions? Reportedly, there was some archival taping done, or there would not have been a screening of the filmed material that I am aware of.
The reason they did the group hug was because Neeley, Elliman, Dennan, and to a lesser extent, Vereen, have worked together for some 25+ years. They have a history together. Black is a relative newcomer to the broadway scene, although I do love to see him branch out like this.
I will try to put it in far more elequent terms: Ted Neeley was very, very subtle in the film. As he got older, though, his interpretation has become much stronger. You can't really judge Neeley until you've seen him live, or at least until you listen to a boot from the 92-97 tour.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I can accept that he may be better now, but he was no part of "subtle" in the film. He was simply bad. Most of that movie was miscast. Judas and Herod were the only genuinely good roles. And it irks me that they changed lyrics for the film.
In summary, The film suffered from poor production and casting.
They didn't change the lyrics for the film. Only in "Strange Thing, Mystifying" where they switch "let her kiss you/stroke your hair" instead of "let her stroke you/kiss your hair". It wasn't bad. The production was brilliant, filled with metophores and breathtaking cinematography. Neeley was good; his voice was nice, albeit weaker than it is now. All of the cast was fantastic except Herod and Simon.
I appreciate that this comment was left a couple of months ago, but I've only just seen it.
I agree with you that Judas & Herod are the best roles, but isn't it always easier to play a baddie? (albeit, in Judas' case a desperately vulnerable one).
You can't possibly knock Ted Neeley for his interpretation. It's the one that has inspired people for generations. And isn't that the point?
Fuck me, I'm an atheist, but he still makes me think... what if? So I guess that makes me an agnostic now.
And? I'm an Athiest, but that doesn't mean that I can't like Jesus Christ Superstar. One doesn't necessarily have to believe something in order to act in a play of it. To many athiests, myself included, this is just another story. The fact that it was written off a story in the bible doesn't enter into it.
This was a one night event, reuniting most of the movie cast, although Carl Anderson wasn't there, instead Ben Vereen, the original broadway Judas played the part. In the ted neeley tour, he is the only original cast member movie or broadway on the tour.
