The original 'reflecting' identity was designed by Minale Tattersfield in the late 1960's. They also designed the Harrods logo, Hammersmith Tube Station, the Imperial War Museum branding, Oval etc.
@flares It was partially based on the 21st anniversary logo which is missing from this collection. Wasn't keen on that one either. I hardly ever watch TV nowadays because there's nobody left making good shows anymore. The "Carltonisation" of ITV, the budget restrictions on BBC and the various other channels, not to mention the fragmentation of content by too many channels just doesn't appeal to me.
As the song went; "you don't know what you got 'til it's gone"
@Anabella1974 I never even understood what happened to them I'm from the USA so I don't know what happened to Thames Television but I know that some television shows aren't always from America.
Dislike The last one a lot... The fourth one brings back memories (Benny Hill), I actually like third one (the last B&W) the best because the bottom half actually looks like a water reflection. Just my opinion.
anyone remember that when it was goin to be a slightly scary or spooky programme, the thames logo would be a nightime scene instead of daytime? anyone? or am i just jerkin off?
Yeah, scared the shit out of me too, old chap. Though to be fair, I was only about 6 at the time and the creepy music they added to the ident sure didn't help either.
I hate the new one. Talk about monkeying with a well known brand. There are so many ways that could have included the essence of the originals. Btw Lewisthecollard is a funny bastard!
When, like me, you're French and grew up in the 70s/80s, to you the Thames indent means: it's 8.00pm on Sunday night and Benny Hill is coming to channel 3. It was the only TV show my parents would let me watch after 7.00pm (my mum was a nutcase telephobic). At 8.30pm, right after Benny Hill, we had to go to bed. I loved those Sunday nights watching the crazy skits of our cousins from across the Channel...
Always liked that trumpet in the older idents. not familar or crazy about the revolving full orchestra one. I guess no programes from that id's era had been imported here, I do see the carlton thing at the end of shows. so that's what replaced thames. eew.
Well like I said on a previous video, even if pre programme idents stayed, there would be no way they would have kept the classic Thames skyline ident. Around this time, stations like Central, TVS and Anglia were using very good computer generated effects on there idents.
It's like saying that they should have kept the Anglia knight in the 90's. A classic ident it was, but never would have got into the 90's.
Maybe they could have put a bit more action in the last one.
Is there a single person on earth who's glad that Carlton beat Thames to the 1992 franchise? If there is he should probably go and live in a cave somewhere until he sorts himself out.
Thames Television was a class act, in effect, it carried ITV and when it got ousted by the dreadful Carlton in the early 1990's, ITV became a shadow of its former self. Look at ITV today, surviving on soaps and X Factor. It needs Thames Television and its creativity more than ever and I say that as a BBC fan.
The Thames idents were some of the best of all the ITV ones over the years. It makes me rather sad that they lost their franchise in 1992/93 to the terrible Carlton, which was the start of what is now ITV1 going downhill.
Also, to answer the point raised by disremembrance, the Thames skyline ident was on air for 20 years no less, from 1969 until 1989. It must indeed be one of the longest shown idents that any channel has had!
The last one is so crap... The classic colour 'skyline' ident is the best. Some might say they used it for too long (nearly 20 years), but the reason they kept it all that time is because it was bloody good!!! I think it must be the longest-running ITV ident ever? Correct me if I'm wrong!
Yes it's the Benny Hill Show!!!!

The fourth one is definitely the best, 'cos adding color worked. The fifth (last) one is pompous, and overblown.

The first one in color is one on saw in European History class last year on a video from the '70s of World War II.

Do you have the full version of this??
I always remember that just once in a while Thames would play the full version. Don't know why, maybe because of an early finishing program.

The Last one came in when Thames lost its franchise.
It wanted to show it was still strong therefore ditching the skyline ident.
