@rocky2971 Umm...If you actually read about what is going on, the premise of the workers is that they feel these jobs SHOULD be jobs held by local workers. These used to be locally-held and unionized jobs, until Hershey started exploiting these students.
As far as I am concerned these foreign misguided little kids are taking jobs away from Americans who would work for Hershey Foods. What did these little kids want? 50 dollars an hour? . Of course the GREEDY troublemaking unions would get involved ...these kids are so mixed up they dont know the UNION is the one taking advantage of them. NEXT TIME IF YOU ARE SO SMART READ THE FINE PRINT..or better yet...stay home and dont trespass in the USA anymore...
@Blondediamonds1 Wow, your response could not be more ignorant. Who do you think hired these "foreign misguided little kids"? Americans. Who do you think wanted them to "trespass in the USA" in order to gain cheap labor? "GREEDY troublemaking" American corporations.
They are standing in the middle of the street. Who do you think will get sued it one of them gets hit??? What happened to honor and integrity. Send these kids to China to work then they will know what a bad job is.
@stupidcan'tbefixed - What, you can't take someone making actual valid, truthful points to you, so you chicken shit out, disable comments on your page and just pretend to not hear anything?? THAT'S your great and wonderful idealogy there, anything that just doesn't work for you, you ignore. Like what's happening to these workers, what's happening in the US right now, everything. Just go on being an ignorant old fool, it's what you're best at.
@cauchamar I simply don't believe everything the students are stating and I don't believe anyone would sign a contract stating they would be working and not know it. As for crime of "trespass" ...you have got to be one stupid individual; you think that you are allowed anywhere you want to go. And you think people living in the US are trespassing on "Native American" land. BTW, my relatives are not Indians, they are Native Americans and only ignorant people call them Indians!
Don't be fooled -- these labor people were only there to protect their own jobs as unions slowly disappear and go out of business. This is a manufactured controversy.
I understand this situation more fully and deeply than you can imagine. These workers were not held captive or "exploited". This whole story has been contorted and over-hyped as leverage by one or more unions -- in other words, at the end of the day if anyone is exploiting these students it's the labor unions who are supposedly championing their cause.
This is America, we should stand for more. We shouldn't be mistreating people in our country like this. LIke the gentleman said in the beginning of the video, this is immoral and sick.
You people who are with Hersheys are beyond stupid. These people paid thousands to get here. They are not getting paid 8 dollars an hour. The greedy ass companies are striping their money with hidden fees. They are only making about $2 to $3 an hour at most.
@joshlete How much do you make an hour after you pay your housing and transportation costs? This whole story is stupidly slanted. I believe they are getting screwed on their housing costs but I can't see how that's Hershey's problem. Anyway -- if you are making $8 an hour and have over $100 left a week after housing and transportation you're doing pretty well. And anyone calling a sore back from lifting 40lb boxes in 59 degrees an "atrocity" needs to get a better dictionary.
@ohnanrah Hersheys is being very greedy. It is a fact that all major companies are greedy when it comes to their employers. $100 goes by VERY fast. With gas prices, food, and everything, $100 is going off of dirt.
It is sad how much of a puppet the cops are. "they are just enforcing the law". So, in that case, Hitlers followers were just "doing their job" by killing millions of Jewish people.
What is even more sad is that celebrities and beyond stupid things are airing on the news, but not this.
My concept of the difference between success and failure:
SUCCESS go to: wimp.com/wantsuccess/
FAILURE: Students at Hersheys
Seems like many here come from different mindset; maybe out of your own laziness. I have always chosen success for my path whereas, these students chose failure. And after you view the video of success I hope some of you might just get motivated to actually perform your job and be happy that you are employed.
Should indentured servants and slaves also be happy that they're employed? Do they choose failure, if they're unhappy with being indentured servants or slaves? Are they lazy?
Just to clarify, as I wont return to this vid. I refer to "Freedom of Assembly" and "Freedom of association". And don't use the argument that these people were somehow outside those rights. The police claims people got arrested for "obstructing traffic" amongst others, but the real reason is clearly because they were protesting. It's sad that the police don't side with the people rather than corporations. Ive seen this mny times on youtube, the dance protest at Lincoln memorial to mention one.
@lordjanitor2 How were these people arrested for protesting. How can you argue that sitting in the middle of the street is clearly not obstructing traffic. Furthermore, however much some people may hate the police, these people were not arrested for protesting. They were arrested for trespassing and sitting in the street. Which if I'm not mistaken is obstructing traffic. The police didn't side with anyone. They enforced the law. Freedom of Assembly is not unconditional. It requires much more.
Do your homework and get ALL the facts before forming an opinion. All of these students signed contracts explaining to them EXACTLY what the job requirements and pay would be; these students were treated better than their American counterparts. People that don't want to move boxes in a chocolate factory for $8.10 an hour shouldn't sign contracts in which they explicitly agree to move boxes in a chocolate factory for $8.10 an hour in exchange for their J1 visa and did they say free room & board?
DON'T SIGN THE PETITION ...get off welfare, go to work, make some money, pay for your way in life, don't complain when things get tough ...MAN UP and learn from life's lessons instead of being some weak suck ass like these lazy ass students that don't know shit about hard work. They had to load boxes on conveyors, big f__kin deal. Life isn't always a bed of roses.
@stupidcantbefixed Yes, man up no matter what the difficulty, even in the face of injustice. It doesn't matter if the workers are severely injured, they should just stop being lazy because it's just a couple of boxes. Please, as much as I want to believe your stories, I really don't see why you are so keen to stop this petition. I want to know what makes you think that any of this is justified? You would also agree that asian workers should stop complaining because it's just a few pair of shoes?
@SeanMWang Asian workers??? I knew someone would use that comparison. The hoopla about Asian workers is the part about child labor and ...not normal factory labor. There is a difference.
@daniellandgrens, yeah, he did and that was totally awesome to put that lazy ass student down. Send them back and let us tough Americans continue to do the hard work these lazy pampered shits can't do.
@hiatusjosh I just went out and bought over $100 in Hershey Chocolates to give away to the homeless people near where I live. I will pass them out tomorrow. And the whole time I will be thinking about the down and out that are incapable of working and how lame these lazy ass students are that never worked a day in their lazy ass life.
Hersheys, you will never see a dime again from my family. I'll pay your (local organic-HONEST) competitors just to cut your legs off. take your faux "chocolate" and shove it where the sun don't shine.
How about START A PETITION to completely stop student guest workers! Ha, there ya go ...guess they forgot to read the last word in "student guest worker". I do believe it is "worker". And what does that mean ...DUH ...WORK! Not pamper with special treatment above and beyond what many in this country do all day, all week, all year, year after year most of their lives. SIGN A PETITION TO SEND THEM HOME ...with their heads still up their lazy asses.
We are sick of people that are complaining about a few months of manual labor instead of having their baby asses pampered. Obviously, the only ones here supporting their bullshit are the people that haven't actually had to work for a living and had shit handed to them all their lame ass lives.
They need to get their lazy asses deported & find a sympathetic (or pathetic) country to go and get their lazy asses pampered.
The stupid shits need a LOT MORE SCHOOLING. They should have done their homework PRIOR to coming to the US. Send them back where they came from so they can learn to think before they leap. And maybe learn how to suck it up and actually work for a change. Oh my, they have to lift boxes ..whoopty do. .They can kiss my ass, the whinny weak-minded lazy shits!
This is what the working class has been faced with for just over a century.
My dad slapped loyalty to the company at me, I retorted with the company no
longer cares about their employees, just how much more they can put in their
own pockets.
HERSHEY'S is NOT the only company in America pulling this crap. Until the world stands up to big business together in unison... all this will continue.
Workers in other countries AND all High School students....... WISE UP NOW!!!!
''We have made a determination that people might get injured''. The guy is being real cool and nice about it, but come on. The truth of the matter is that Hershey simply didn't want that shit near their premises. I mean, sure, laws are set in place and he technically is correct. But shit, jaywalking is a fucking crime as well.
i'm only mad because they paid more than $3000 to go to this place only to end up packing chocolate. Other than that, the whole street riot thing is kinda overdoing it.
@sds7508 Too stupid and too uneducated? Several of these people have higher degrees than the average American. If you watch some of the other videos and read some of the stories, there are students here that have degrees in biology, economics, pre-medicine, etc. Nearly all of them are at a minimum bilingual, many are multi-lingual. What is your education? How many languages can you speak?
@xenochrist15 Cops never did care abut rights. They're just ponds being ordered around. I would hate to be a cop. I'm sure many people become cops with the right intentions. Ultimately, the job makes them blind to differentiate what's right and wrong. They become law enforcing robots. There's no morals, no love, no thinking. It's not human. It angers me every time I see someone get arrested for protesting and standing for their rights peacefully. We live in one messed up world.
@Mr360iModz It already has. America is one of the most corrupted countries in the world, most of you guys are just too blind too see it. Claiming to be a superpower, riiiiiiiight. America is the top 1 country bringing everyone down, just have a look at what their doing to the economy, we got a global economic crisis about to burst out just because your leadership can't get their shit right, not to mention their doing wonders for world piece eh?
These big companies only care about one thing: their MONEY!! Without their workers doing all the hard work while they reap all the rewards, they make no money! They need their workers, yet they treat them like worthless, second-class citizens; strip them of their rights and bring them as close to working slave labour as they possibly can! What pathetic, rotten, evil, self-centered, greedy excuses for "humans" exist in the board rooms of our big "family" corporations... Lies Inc.
After being a long-time fan of Hershey's products (especially Reese's Cups and Twizzlers), I will no longer be purchasing any product that is manufactured by Hershey.
If you believe Hershey is in the wrong, consider purchasing from their competitors: Cadbury Schweppes plc; Mars Incorporated; Nestlé S.A. If this is the way Hershey wants to treat people, I see no reason to support their actions.
These people are being treated like slaves. That's fucked up. If you gonna treat people like shit when they get here, then don't invite them to come here. Don't give them the false hope they could actually have a shot to contribute to American culture when you still will treat them like immigrants. Fuck Hersheys
Hershey has a right to have protestors removed from private property. They also deserve all the ridiculous bad press such an action entails. I think bringing police into this was really shooting themselves in the foot and making a bad PR moment even worse for them. Will have to remember to avoid Hershey products in the future.
The company has all legal rights to remove them from the land. Naturally, they try to excuse what their doing as a "safety concern", but they still have full legality in what they did. Saying that it is wrong for them to do this is idiotic. If they wanted a peaceful protest, they could have done it on public grounds where it would have been much harder for them to be arrested. How would you feel if someone came to your house for a sit-in for political reasons and refused to leave?
I praise the cops because they are just doing their job to keep the street clear. The cop even said it was a noble action but ultimately the town is owned by the Hershey Corporation.
The police had every right to arrest them, they WANTED to be arrested. Every American has the right to peaceful assembly... but not on private property nor in the middle of the street blocking traffic. They sat there so they would be intentionally arrested to make a scene. They do have a good cause... but stand and protest in public space peacefully please, it's your right.
They were protesting on Hershey property, which is trespassing., and against the law. Why is it such a terrible thing for police to arrest people that break the law? I get what you're fighting for, and agree with it, but that doesn't give you the right to trespass.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I wish people would understand exactly how dumb this is. This is an entry level position requiring no experience, you stack and pack boxes. It pays above minimum wage and NORMAL people all over the world work these types of jobs while going to school.
Do you realize how stupid you look getting arrested because you want manual labor workers to have vacation time and healthcare? Grow the fuck up, plenty of people put themselves through college on similar pay rates or worse all the time.
@Jonthezombie These students paid on average 3000 dollars to come to United States for an entry level job. On top of that Hershey company charges them three times the average rate of an apartment in Central Pa. If these students leave refuse to pay for these houses or try to find other jobs they are deported.
What was the point of everyone voluntarily getting arrested? They got arrested for breaking laws unrelated to what they were protesting, so it was pointless and just made them look bad.
I had a friend that worked at Hershey's and he said that they used to get cocoa product from all over the world shipped in huge barrels and he said that one night he grabbed one of those barrels to open it to dump in the machine to make chocolate and when he opened it he noticed some white stuff sorta moving on the top... it was maggots, he told his supervisor which told him to take them off the top and to use the cocoa anyway.
These are educated foreign students. Some of them are in the medical field, some economics. They paid $3000-6000 to come here to learn about American culture and to be a part of this great nation. Instead they were taken to the Hershey factory to do manual labor at horrific conditions and less than $5 an hr. They are demanding these jobs returned to locals with the unions supervising their conditions as well as compensation. They are not only fighting for their personal justice but for the loca
@orit1000 Not true. They were paid above the minimum wage at $8 per hour. And if these working conditions are so "horrific," why would union workers want them? The fact is that if working in a factory isn't too "horrific" for Americans, it isn't too "horrific" for international students, either. And I don't see why Americans should be getting lectured by international exchange students about our labor practices, given that in their home countries the minimum wage is only 1/8 as much.
As an American citizen I would like to express my gratitude to these kids. American workers have been beaten down like whipped curs ... so they no longer stand up for their rights. Luckily, these kids are from freer countries where worker exploitation isn't tolerated
. They still know how to fight for rights ...sadly, Americans have forgotten.
You know what is truly exploitative? Using international students as props to push someone's political agenda. They came here to live and work in the United States, not to get sucked into a management-labor dispute. The unions that put these kids up to this are lucky Hershey hasn't already gone the way of so many other U.S. employers and packed up its factory and moved it to China in response to this video-where the minimum wage is 1/8 high as what these students complain of having been paid.
@navygolf98 perhaps you missed the part where the KIDS sought out the help of the unions. Perhaps you missed the fact that the jobs they are being forced to do on near slave wages used to be done by people earning a decent wage. Why are you, as an apparent military person, so ready to defend US corporations that pack up and move to China anyway... as if that's ok? These kids were brought here under false pretense, put to work for low wages and their pay checks docked. Shameful.
@TribeWantedGilligan First, I don't believe that the kids were the ones that initiated contact with the labor unions, and even if they were, the unions should not have obliged. Using international students who come here to learn about American culture as political props is way out of bounds...and I say that as a registered Democrat. These students were not brought here under false pretenses; the State Department regs require that they be fully briefed. If they chose to ignore that, their fault.
@TribeWantedGilligan I'm also not following how these jobs done by international students is "exploitative," but if they are done by a union worker at a higher wage, that's somehow ok. Either the job itself is unsafe / inhumane or it isn't. An "inhumane" work environment doesn't suddenly become "humane" the moment it is done by a union worker at a higher wage. And I have nothing against unions generally; I have a big problem with what this particular union did in this situation.
@TribeWantedGilligan ... Hershey's already moved their plant, that was in Oakdale CA ,to Mexico in 2009... They laid off 600 people in the process.. I have NO love for Hershey's.. However, It's too damn bad these people don't like their working conditions... Go back home if you don't like it here...... They can go back when ever they want, and NOTHING is making them stay...... Have them get a job in their country, and leave these jobs to Americans... Fn bunch of whiners...........
Hershey uses Slave labor from foreign countries because American companies don't want to hire Americans anymore. Keep it up rich people. People with no income can't buy your crap.
impeding the flow of traffic mentioned by the cops is actually interfering with commerce and is a grand idea, just be safe. Learn your constitution and never assist in your own arrest by standing,or walking with the cops, passive resistance, don't offer to assist in anyway,if you do it can be alleged that you consented to the actions of cops, this is coming form a former deputy. Keep going folks, voices are being heard. Noncompliance all the time.
For Hershey's abuse I am pledging to boycott all of the company's products and those of its suppliers and affiliates. I will no longer assist them in earning revenue due to this abuse and fraud upon these kids. I will never buy another Hershey product in my lifetime! Do you hear me Hershey? Do you hear me John Bilbery? I will tell everyone I know about you and this act!!! Change dott orgg !!!
@roger6060 Unions are what made this country great. If it weren't for unions there would be no workers comp., no 40 hour work week, no overtime pay etc... Unions work for the good of the people. That's why unions were one of the first things Hitler got rid of so he could control the people better. You are a fascist pig.
@canucanoe2861 When Franklin D. Roosevelt entered office, he tried to push again for shorter hours, but they were overruled by the U.S. Supreme Court. Instead, the Walsh-Healy Public Contracts Act of 1936 passed, which required the federal government to pay its contractors overtime wages after eight hours of work in a day. And then the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 passed, which established the five-day, 40-hour work week for everyone, a standard we observe today
What should we do: Eat more Hershey's Chocolate or boycott Hershey's .
" TIL Hershey Chocolate pays immigrant student workers $5/hr to work in packing facilities and threatens any action with deportation"
_ The 2011 Pennsylvania state minimum wage rate is $7.25 per hour. Minimum wage workers in PA earn a total of $290.00 per week _
Pennsylvania is the seat for the US division of the New World Order Illuminati scum. They are a disease, a cancer, spreading around the globe. Stop the NWO !
Cops were there because number one, police are ALWAYS there whenever ANY demonstration happens, anywhere. They were not called just to arrest people. Secondly, people could have gotten easily injured mainly because they were standing right in the middle of the road where the semi trucks had to drive on. The trucks were rolling along just a few feet from them. The man arrested, if you hadn't seen, was sitting in the middle of the road blocking the trucks.
I hope this costs Hershey's a boatload of money. Certainly gonna cost them more in lost sales than they made exploiting these foreign youth. I'm hopeful that the stories these young people have to tell their countrymen will help the rest of the world see exactly what a scam the US is trying to run on the rest of the world.
"...there are folks on the property that could get INJURED". Really? How? Notice how he kept saying "law enforcement" rather than "police" or "cops"? "Additional action" and "additional measures" rather than "arrest"? "Attendees" rather than "protesters"? Pure psychological trickery to avoid saying, "The protesters will be arrested by the cops if they continue...[to show the world what scumbags Hershey's executives truly are]"
This was a peaceful demonstration. Calling the police to arrest these demonstrators is yet another slap in the face of the working class who have little recourse these days. This is why America needs unions to protect the rights of workers and ensure safe working conditions and a living wage. Protect the unions! And buy only Free Trade chocolate and other products.
@MarlaneW So if you decide to stand on my property without my permission you don't think I should cal the cops? Really? So I should what? Shoot you with rocksalt?
@Hellfireblogs It should never have gotten to this point in the first place. Hersheys is defrauding and abusing these kids. i am disgusted that this kind of thing still goes on in America. Maybe they should have moved just outside the property, but none of it should have happened in the first place. Hershey's conduct is beyond appaling, it is absolutely Dickensian. I am disgusted and will never eat Hersheys again. the cops puppets doing the bidding of big business. What is happening USA
@MarlaneW no, they were on hersheys property, thats like some guy camping in your back yard. i dont support harsh-eys yet demonstrations are fucking annoying
@MarlaneW you can't demonstrate on private property and think your rights are protected. Your "rights" are against the US government. Private property is a lot different.
wait till these good cops wind up laid off, because the corporations they 'serve' no longer serve the community and state with fair taxes or jobs. so obvious what lies ahead....
This is some AWESOME cultural exchange these kids are getting. Okay, Hershey probably didn't want the lesson to be "together we bargain, separately we beg," but fuck THEM in the ear.
I'm SO ASHAMED to live here. how can 192 watch a random or so-its-called citizen and torture them and get away with it? Because targeting the defesneless is easy. DTP LEAVE YOUNG WOMEN/KNOWN HOMOSEXUALS AND FOREIGNERS, AND ESPECIALLY THE POOR, PLUS ANYONE ELSE WHO APPEARS DEFENSELESS. Save lives in Harrisburg if you know how, Virtually NO CRIME here and still most cops per. cap. in PA. Do some good for the love of God, we know you have the funds.
@CrazyCrista and on another note, THATS A SIT IN its one of the most logically non-threatening forms of prorest possible. gross. i want to vomit. i've been through this (actions by this county), my family has suffered immensely due to unnessicary police force or abuse of power, such as lying to the parent of a minor on the nature/details of the offense. we all need to start speaking up; unless the - -dtp majority speaks as they do to me or a peer, You. Now. Anywhere. BE HEARD
I recognize that representative from Hershey from the "Raise the Bar Hershey" rally outside the Hershey store in Times Square, NYC this past June, attended by hundreds of NYC students calling for an end to child labor in Hershey's cocoa. It's clear that, as of now, the company would rather trot around it's security forces across the country to harass young people calling for basic rights than to address its exploitation of workers from cocoa fields in West Africa to factories in Pennsylvania.
We don't eat hershey's products anyways... there's much more companies that have a much tastier chocolates...

The police are trespassing on Indian land. As are we all. The crime of "trespass" is, frankly, a joke anywhere, but especially in America.

The company has all legal rights to remove them from the land. Naturally, they try to excuse what their doing as a "safety concern", but they still have full legality in what they did. Saying that it is wrong for them to do this is idiotic. If they wanted a peaceful protest, they could have done it on public grounds where it would have been much harder for them to be arrested. How would you feel if someone came to your house for a sit-in for political reasons and refused to leave?

I wish people would understand exactly how dumb this is. This is an entry level position requiring no experience, you stack and pack boxes. It pays above minimum wage and NORMAL people all over the world work these types of jobs while going to school.
Do you realize how stupid you look getting arrested because you want manual labor workers to have vacation time and healthcare? Grow the fuck up, plenty of people put themselves through college on similar pay rates or worse all the time.

@Jonthezombie These students paid on average 3000 dollars to come to United States for an entry level job. They are not only fighting for their personal justice but for the loca
orit1000 6 months ago
@orit1000 Not true. They were paid above the minimum wage at $8 per hour. And if these working conditions are so "horrific," why would union workers want them? The fact is that if working in a factory isn't too "horrific" for Americans, it isn't too "horrific" for international students, either. And I don't see why Americans should be getting lectured by international exchange students about our labor practices, given that in their home countries the minimum wage is only 1/8 as much.

As an American citizen I would like to express my gratitude to these kids. American workers have been beaten down like whipped curs ... so they no longer stand up for their rights. Luckily, these kids are from freer countries where worker exploitation isn't tolerated
. They still know how to fight for rights ...sadly, Americans have forgotten.
diezungen 6 months ago
You know what is truly exploitative? Using international students as props to push someone's political agenda. They came here to live and work in the United States, not to get sucked into a management-labor dispute. The unions that put these kids up to this are lucky Hershey hasn't already gone the way of so many other U.S. employers and packed up its factory and moved it to China in response to this video-where the minimum wage is 1/8 high as what these students complain of having been paid.
navygolf98 6 months ago
@navygolf98 you really think this, man are you brainwashed
hud01 6 months ago
@navygolf98 perhaps you missed the part where the KIDS sought out the help of the unions. Perhaps you missed the fact that the jobs they are being forced to do on near slave wages used to be done by people earning a decent wage. Why are you, as an apparent military person, so ready to defend US corporations that pack up and move to China anyway... as if that's ok? These kids were brought here under false pretense, put to work for low wages and their pay checks docked. Shameful.
TribeWantedGilligan 6 months ago
@TribeWantedGilligan First, I don't believe that the kids were the ones that initiated contact with the labor unions, and even if they were, the unions should not have obliged. Using international students who come here to learn about American culture as political props is way out of bounds...and I say that as a registered Democrat. These students were not brought here under false pretenses; the State Department regs require that they be fully briefed. If they chose to ignore that, their fault.
navygolf98 6 months ago
@TribeWantedGilligan I'm also not following how these jobs done by international students is "exploitative," but if they are done by a union worker at a higher wage, that's somehow ok. Either the job itself is unsafe / inhumane or it isn't. An "inhumane" work environment doesn't suddenly become "humane" the moment it is done by a union worker at a higher wage. And I have nothing against unions generally; I have a big problem with what this particular union did in this situation.
navygolf98 6 months ago
@TribeWantedGilligan ... Hershey's already moved their plant, that was in Oakdale CA ,to Mexico in 2009... They laid off 600 people in the process.. I have NO love for Hershey's.. However, It's too damn bad these people don't like their working conditions... Go back home if you don't like it here...... They can go back when ever they want, and NOTHING is making them stay......
