    Guitarman

  • oh,modern tube pre with ducking delay

  • um,the mans too big is about God....and this song IS about seeing an old lover with a new partner...carry on....

    Guitarman

  • the "man's" too big is about God? lyrics refer to a war criminal and being able to

"still hear his laughter, still hear his song" and the reference to book burning brings to mind WWII and Hitler. could God (of any religious belief) be too big, too strong?

  • this song makes me think of something slow, intense, dark, and dangerous that is all building up to something big.

  • alèèèè!!!!!!

  • genial!!

  • Man, what an excellent version of a great tune. Thanks for postin it.

  • One of the best (and underplayed) tracks - simply brilliant.

  • if the song is not about Catering for parties, etc then it might be about two LADieS and 1 GENT (like Tunnel of Love) which is a welcome change from the general theme of 2 MEN + WOman which seems to be the case with: ROmeo + Juliet, Love over Gold, The MAN's too STRong, Private Investigations, Money for Nothing, Your Latest Trick, What's the matter BaBy, Who's Your Baby Now, etc.

  • Please does anyone know what type of distortion he uses here? I would kill for that sound.

  • from another world....

  • yeah, he seems to be asleep, tired or just drunk (drugged?!?) ok,

    totally in another world

  • Thanks for this.

  • If you do not shiver, you might be a cop and never shiver

  • eh??

  • That was stunning. I whack the last 3 mins up in the car and I am in emotional euphoria. Dire Straits are fu**ing genius' Tunnel of Love, Heavy Fuel, Planet of New Orleans, Romeo and Juliet, You and Your Friend, Ride Accross the River and all the rest will go down in infamy! The cohesion between the band is superlative! Long live the best rock and roll band of all time!

  • The meaning is very clear... someone knows two girls and likes both of them but is undecided on which one to hit in case the other one takes offence; he does not want to blow his chances by choosing the wrong target. Mark's and Paul's guitars "take turns" in the main role, just like the two girls in the song. Such a good match between music and lyrics.

  • he can really make the guitar cry or sing, can't he?

  • then listen to the solo of paul franklin

  • what is the meaning of this song

  • Wirklich wunderschön und absolute Superklasse !

  • Perełka!!!!!

  • fabulas

  • Wont you and your friend, come around? Sublime classic.

  • explain :)

i really want to know what this song is about

  • Possibly.. you and your friend come around, get your kit off, and get on down? hmmmmmmm think about it hehehe

  • It sings to the emotions....doesnt waste time on the surface...

  • great show, i had it on vhs when it first aired on tv

  • Good live song for the next coming tour....

  • If I was to go deaf tomorrow, it wouldn't matter none, 'cause I heard dire straits today!

  • Salute!

  • What a genius. Mozart, Beethoven can you hear that?

  • not a note wasted

  • every lick is so tasteful... MK is the phrasing master.

  • brilliant songwriter brilliant guitarist

  • esta cancion y " shine on you ... " se parecen tanto como un huevo a una castaña, pero bueno ambas son grandes canciones ;)

  • Mamma mia che bella!

  • Dall'album del 91 vero?

Combinazione in quell'anno anche Gary Moore passò a sonorità più lente.

Non so se questa canzone la si possa definire blues però secondo me ci sta!

  • sick!

  • On the night, recorded in '95 I think

  • ace guitarist, one of my favorites

  • it gets so deep.

from 5:20 on... no words for that guitar hymn

  • i like better his pants at 6:10

  • To me it starts at 3.50 - but the guitar work is just sublime - the whole song is just superb. Doesn't it just piss you off that some people post comments on the like of this song and they clearly are only a few brain cells ahead of seaweed?

  • It reminds me of Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd

  • the opposite: Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd reminds on this

  • paul franklin.....mark knopfler...john illsey..etc....masterpieces!!!

  • That is Paul Franklin playing Pedabro, aka, the Box. Great band, cool sound. The dude played steel for Barbara Mandrell, Mel Tillis and the late Jerry Reed among others others.

  • thanks

  • WHO IS ON DOBRO/steel guitar?

  • 5.22, mark is in the zone.

  • From 5:20 on you get clostest to the truth. Pure magic

  • lola-lola aime trop Dio

  • im on drugs

  • sublime

  • goose bumps,jesus!!!!!!

  • w l'Italia campione del mondo,magnifici i dire straits

  • check out marks right hand at 0:24

  • TOP TOP TOP !!!

  • the part at 2:43. I get the impression of the riff is like 'yeh if your gonna tease me with another guy, then Fuck you" lol

  • Genial

  • He makes a big emotional solo with only few notes . It involves so many 'rest points'

I guess this makes the parts where he does play even more powerfull and emotional.

  • knopfler and gilmore different class

  • This song defines the quality that Dire Straits consistently delivered thier followers. The quality of the guitaring in the later stages of the song is breathtaking. MK is quite simply a genius, the clarity of his chords beggars believe, it is effortless brilliance, a true spectacle.....

  • Deep, Moody, and Emotional---Wonderful!

  • Love this song!!!!

  • To Les122956

He maybe never told her he liked her. Now she's got a new friend and he doesn't know if it's only a friend to her or more and asks if they're coming around or not to know it ? In any case, for me, he's already jealous.

  • right, and the riff at 2:44 is like If u got anew friend Fuck him lol, cause i dont need you

  • which is his guitar?

  • pensa suhr custom made one of the best :D i want one too

  • From a time when music could be Soulful and Personal...

  • One of the best Dire Straits tracks - but for some reason it isn't regarded as such by most people.

Great lyics, absolutely brilliant guitar work especially in the second half of the track.

And just so totally Dire Straits - I love it, just totally love it.

This sort of stuff just doesn't happen now.

  • your thoughts on lyrics?

his old girlfriend has a new boyfriend.

he's hoping she just brings him around to make him jealous?

if they don't come around he figures they're elsewhere together and it's over?

or maybe she has a girlfriend and he wants them both! lol?

  • i think it's your second thought, with the imagination working overtime ...

  • I think that his ex girlfriend has a new boyfriend but mark doesn't have the courage or the will or the strenght to call him boyfriend so he calls him "friend"!!

  • that's the point...of the song!

  • yeah that was kind of the whole idea. captain obvious. but it had nothing to do with marks 'strength'

  • exactly

  • Indeed. and ive only RECENTLY heard this. but damn, one of the best

  • SWEET GUITAR SOUND!!!

  • its very magical!!!

  • Magique & Genial

  • this is what makes a great musician; great play and doing whats best for the song not ego

  • Cuts deep....magnificient!

  • énorme

  • Great atmosphere

  • it's so amazing!!

  • jajamen! Du kan svenska? Vad kul ^^

mark knopfler är "riktigt jvla bra" !

  • GUITAR GOD

  • Fantastic. No words needed here.

  • shit vad bra!

  • This video is one of the thousands of reasons, why I love Dire Straits since I remember myself... I agree... simply amazing!

  • agree, Im seeing MArk next week

  • I have seen this video thousands of times. Reminds me wonderful time. Simply amazing.

  • Isnt it funny how a sombre song can bring back the good memories? 100% unbeatable.

  • Oh my god, I have showers evrywhere on my body, when Mark is touching his guitar. Only GREAT!

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS!

  • this song is one of the Best kept secrets in Rock n Roll...

  • the way he sings & plays guitar still brings me to tears!

  • One of the most underrated songs of all times, and I am glad it is.

    Dire Straits for life!!!

  • when i was young (3-4 years) i cannot sleep without Dire Straits songs. My father put on my ears a headset with Dire Straits songs

  • From 5:20 on it takes the top of my head right off...magnificient!

  • I love 2:00 his voice is awesome there.. Im having a beer & enjoying this music!

  • Stop talkin' and listenin'

  • the god of music!

  • agree!

  • Simply a masterpiece! Thanks a million for uploading.

  • Wonderful

  • I am in love.

  • from the best album ever...on the night....i miss dire straits a lot...

  • "You And Your Friend (Original)" is a slightly different version from on every street.

  • Magnificent!!.Best music ever..Dire Straits for ever..Mark Knopfler is a Genious!!..

  • I always picture fighter jets heading to a target ... commander and wingman, seen from the ground by some jaded refugee. Yeah, "you and your friend, come around." I guess that's unusual, but it's such a cynical tune ...

The backup from Illsley and Palmer is so subtle. John does a few bass things way up high, and Phil does what every Straits rhythm guitarist must ...

  • My god, that tone!!!

Does anyone know what gear precisely Mark uses for this song.

Since I was a kid i´ve been listening to this song, and everytime I get my hair raised at the first and last solo!

The best guitar tone in rock and roll: Mark Knopfler

  • It's a Pensa-Suhr guitar through an early 90s Soldano amp.

  • just imagine being able to pick a guitar

up and bang out solos like that! amazing.

  • The Greatest unknown Masterpiece in rock...Magnificient!

  • an absolute hair-raiser - that opening guitar solo is just spine tingling.

  • great band , great song

  • marks got so much control!

  • I got to see mark play in london 1996! Fantastic way to end my european vacation, I'll never forget!

  • BRILIANT

  • U are right man. will never be the same.

Great bands like Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Deep Purple will never die and we'll always listen their songs. Why? Because today bands sux, they don't give a f*ck. They want just money...

Genious song. Damn, i was born to late :|

  • Lovely. Love it

  • Perfect.

  • makes me wish i was born in the 60's. That way i would be in my 20's in the 1980's and gone to one of their concerts and just let all my troubles drift away into space...

  • nice words I'm 50 Iwas in university when i 1st heard of them we are really gifted bec that period was very prolific musically speaking

i didn't have the chance to attend their concerts i only watched live tapes & enjoyed listening to them on the radio

i really miss that period but tell me why has modern music deteriorated so much

    thanks 4postin thanks u tube

  • well salahazzouz,in my opinion i think todays music is so, so bad is because the music industry has taken over it and not the artists. Its all about moneyTherefore they only make music that sells. Sex, drugs and singers that look like models yet have no talent are some of the reasons music is just not what it used to be. Man, i remember when artists didn't care about their image, how they dressed or whatever and just got out on the stage and rocked out like any other ordinary guy in the crowd.

  • Archronos....You hit the nail on the head! Back in the day talent was more important than what you looked like or how marketable you were! If Patsy Cline was alive today she wouldn't be able to get a recording contract, she wouldn't have the looks or figure to get a deal. What a shame! Is it just me or does it seem like bands today can't plat anything but bar chords. Very little if any tasteful guitar playing from all the supposed young talent! Shame, Shame, it'll never be the same!

  • Two words; Fuckin' genius!!!!

  • fantastic

  • Pure genius, no other word to describe it!
