There are so many fantastic versions of this song from the early 60's.I grew up wit mostly the Peter Paul and mary version. I have always loved it since I was a kid. I was recently inspired to attempt to sing it myself. I am very much just an amature singer but I would be pleased if the people who like this song would stop by my channel and give a listen to my rendition.....Terry
When I got married, We had our honeymoon about 500 miles from home and I thought about this song because it was the first time I was away from home without my parents, starting out on the world by ourselves.
This reminds me being left alone and not have any friends to comfort or support you ecspecially the ones who are picked on like the kids with autisum including me with no place to go because of society that's mean to us.
The first time I heard this song, I was sitting in a PX in Nam and I was never so homesick as I was that day.....I love all the work of the Kingston Trio
What a soulful, sentimental song. Within its melancholy, is beauty and honor within the soul. If this does not pull at your soul and your heart strings then you are in possession of neither.
@gva0917 Just read your comment - and could not agree with you more. Have you ever heard Richard Anthony (J'entends siffler le train) sing it? That was the version I heard first back in the early 60's and it is still my favourite. Listen to the one posted by rozenfelds84, which also shows beautiful pictures of trains. Soulful greetings from Ontario.
Of all the songs the Kingston Trio ever performed, this was the first I heard and has remained my favorite over the years (with the possible exception of "Farewell Captain"). Many thanks for posting this.
Beautiful!
