I agree with Rebekah; the 'American Badass' persona was crap, as it was at odds with the very successful 'deadman' gimmick. However, it allowed Callaway to show that he was more than a shambling asskicker and that he could technically wrestle. But the WWE quickly realised that the biker gimmick had far less longevity than the Undertaker. William Regal was great as the commissioner though!

The Undertaker and to adapt to the era that had been ushered in by The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin so that is what he did. Personally I love the gimmick American Badass/Big Evil. It is also closer to the real Mark Callaway then The Deadman was. We all have to face it though, in this era, ABA and Big Evil were the best choices for his career.
