  • My grandmother grew up there in the late 20s and the 30s, she found this video to bring back some memories thanks!

  • This film is a 1948 release.

Regarding the Cultural Center, I believe that opened about 1977. The library moved to an old warehouse called the Mandel Building that stood about where the NBC Tower is now. When the owners decided to raze it they moved over near the Merchandise Mart.

  • coolest city Ive ever been to

  • Are there any guys watching this who lived near Wells st around 1964-66? I grew up there during those years, down town area.

  • @TheCoffeeshopguru I was born on Wells near Lincoln and lived in the area in the 60s

  • Still known as the Field Museum! Not "formerly"! Chicago is still beautiful and STILL clean, especially when compared to other cities of similar and larger size (*cough* New York *cough*) What really strikes me is all of the open space. The skyline had yet to be filled with skyscrapers.

  • look how beautiful and clean. I have relatives in Chicago, and love to visit, but you have to be very careful.

  • @califgirl11 Actually, I think it looks quite dreary and dirty compared to the way it is now. A lot of the buildings in the film are covered in soot from industry, coal heating and railroads. If you look at those buildings now, they are much cleaner, and many have been restored. Chicago is much more beautiful now.

  • @dmnddog74 actually, I can see your point. There was a time in the 70's and 80's when it was not so beautiful. Thanks for your comment.

  • Actually joerime, it was still the Chicago Library in the 1980s. I believe it changed in the 1990s.

  • Hey PattyBinkis, what years were you going to the "downtown library"? Just curious because the whole time I've been alive (33yrs.) It's always been the Cultural Center. Do you know what year it changed?

  • I was born and raised in Chgo....

I miss some of the great things they have there.

    But HATE the traffic.

I loved the downtown library, even as a teenager, I would take a bus there and sit and read. It was beautiful.

  • Beautiful old film. Many thanks for posting it, donkeyscratch :)

  • @EvanQuinn07 so sorry you feel that way. people like you run this country, people like you breed hatred ,anger and WAR. Go some place and LOVE yourself. I Love you and may GOD bless you
